don p. = art concept .. 1st weathering, battle worn
762s replied to 762s's topic in ROTJ Biker Scout HQ
thanks! this was a fun project and good learning experience for weathering. i did a little more weathering on the right snout .. i like it better now than the full grey streaks -
okay, so ... since i have several scout helmets and not really liking the don p. anymore do to having a lineage helmet now ... i decided to do the don p. up with a vision of a concept art picture i saw around. i reworked the don p. and decided since i wouldnt wear it .. to seal the lid. this helped with the constant expanding this soft vinyl plastic wants to do ... and besides that after having an abs helmet in hand and seeing how light they are and with adding bondo, epoxy and apoxie sculpt to the helmet, this don p. weighs a ton compared to the abs .. lol well, i never weathered with the main method mentioned around here(screen accurate) and i decided to give that a try on this don p. .. dont be shy let me know what you all think! so, here is the concept art i am refering too ... and the hand painted don p. battle worn of mine

looks very nice! good luck and keep us updated with the build.

alright, on with helmet #2 trying some differnent things that i have read around here as well some different thoughts i had about the build and well to add to this wip thread some extra pictures of how i did some things so, on with the pics ... 1. faceplate in progress 2. helmet trimmed and glued -- top -- took the extra time to get the halves as close as i could 3. helmet trimmed and glued -- rear 4. inside helmet -- used the sa oval piece in the center/top of dome, used the heat bending method on the abs strips to form to the contour .. added thin layer of apoxie sculpt to the inside bolt area for strength and to stop the abs hole from getting larger 5. cut out rear missing vent 6. apoxie sculpted the 8th vent 7. rs snout good side 8. rs snout bad side .. this bad area was in the first snout i had too .. and i had to fix it then but, didnt mention it above 9. rs snout bad side fixed

recieved a rubber tank topper from dvh today .. i heard about those fins, decide to get a little insurance more to come!
-
the plastic is pretty thin and easily bendable ... i think screen used helmet might be about same thickness maybe abit less. but, its not rated for safety like you said... SEE this post in my build thread .. http://forum.bikerscout.net/index.php?showtopic=18321&view=findpost&p=168026

Help! Shoulder bell has buckled!
762s replied to AJay Irish's topic in ROTJ Biker Scout Armor/Helmet
if you make a mold of the good bell and use the mold to reshape the warped one....then youll need to bondo the bad one to make it smooth again. that will be making the bell heavier and then youll have to paint it and possibly other parts to match. consider it a bust .... learning experience ... save you time and money and buy another from the vendor like others have said -
looks very nice!! questions... ~ did you mold a track in the inside back seam of the helmet? -- seen in pic 4 under chin strap. ~ is it an optical/photo illusion in pic 2 the top of the dome doesnt look symetrical? -- i do not see that difference with the dome on the front views. again, it looks very nice strider .. good job!

bucket/pot size was enough to be several inches of water above the lens .. i stirred the mixture alot. i did run another lens through the dye and the spotting was not as prevalent as the test and the first lens. and, there is still some sort of build up showing up on the lens making it hazy after dyeing so, im thinking this plastic might be bad i even washed/wiped the 2nd lens in alcohol with micro fiber cloth to get anything off it heres the second lens .. see the clear build up? and how the light is blurry? the scratches are from me trying to remove the clear build up ~ second pic is the spotting on the 2nd lens too ~ i also constantly moved the second lens around and lifted it in and out of the dye

well, the hunt continues for this screen accurate color or a really really close match. this update is with the iDye poly product on a clear lens ~ using the silver grey they offer ~ using a 3m faceshield -- which allows for 3 curved lenses -- i really dont like this product for tinting lenses and theres plenty of reasons ... ~ its purple ~ it leaves an uneven coloring on the lens ~ any imperfections in the plastic you use, allows the dye to build up quiker in those areas ~ its hazy and spotty(this could be due to the plastics imperfections that you can not see with the naked eye) I will be going to the window tint shop and will update with that method soon... so, on with the pics 1. prepping/cutting lens with RS kit face 2. 3 lenses from 1 shield 3. iDye Poly pack 4. test piece of grading the dye -- top is darkest , bottom is clear(no dye) -- you can also see the spotting of the dye 5. imperfections in center of the plastic caused massive build up of the dye 6. its purple!!! not grey

thanks for the additional info. and yes, i can see the difference in the third pic with the color of the grey .. it looks like a close match.
-
you may may want to find a new photo hosting site as your pics are not showing up .. photobucket is dead!
-
hey, thanks for posting back with your lens. where did you get it? im not sure the greys are the same .. close, maybe. but, when i put several lenses ontop of the screen used pic .. i start to think the screen used helmets lens have a different grey or maybe darker or even abit of/hint of blue or green in them .. i took your rs and new lens pic .. and my green lens .. laid them ontop of the screen used picture .. all with white backing heres what i get ... ??? im still waiting on the lens i ordered to come in .. hope this weekend so i can start working on this with dye and tint.

looking good ... congrats! a couple questions and some tips... what type of helmet is it? do you have anymore pics? sides, rear, top, ect. some tips // constructive criticism: spend a few minutes sanding on the eyes around the top and bottom right curve, make them abit more symmetrical ... and the around the bridge of the nose in the eyes .. even up the top eye corners too(one is rounded and the other is squared off) as well, sand the left visor vertical(looks a little wavy) and the edges of the bottom of the visors to get rid of the flare there. looking forward to seeing it finished! good luck and keep us posted!!

thanks! that would be cool to troop and meet some of the forum members around here. i look forward to the day when the build is all done and i can go out an troop

time for an update okay .. so, i received the correct headband and gaffers tape. installed the tape and worked the headband into place so, a pic of the gaffers tape as it was the easiest to do! thats all the tape that is needed to be screen accurate Now, as for the headband .. since i cant find how it was installed i decided to glue it into place but, i had to rework the inside top part of the helmet first. if you use the RS parts then you will need to create a riser out of the extra plastic they sent along with the kit. i went ahead and cut a piece of abs plastic into an oval shape seen in the screen used helmet pics. i then created a riser out of that that would fit over the RS parts. glued the riser to the helmet .. then centered and glued the headband in place. i then went ahead and added abit of a personal touch like the screen used helmets as well added the extra S/N sticker they shipped so, on with the pics. and well, the only thing left to do with this helmet is a respray as, i didnt like the left cheek and there was a warp on the left bottom visor area ... did some bondo work to those areas, as well i reworked the top of the visor ... and thanks RS for sending 2 sets of decals with the kit .. i will be using them after all respray this thing and then onto the 2nd helmet build ... oh yeah, and i have a donp helmet im close to posting up with a custom paint job

the crl does state .. for 501st approval: ~ "replace stock bolts with flat-disc "elevator" bolts" level 2: ~ "Gray 3M bolts or replicas of in the helmet. (Visible bolt head diameter of 22mm)" ~ "Replace stock bolts and use correct flat bolt head or real 3M bolt." your bolts look like the rounded black type

hey, thanks for the reply! please post back with pictures and more info i have ordered the dye strider mentioned as well a clear lens -- will give that a try and im still up to see/try other options to get as close to screen accurate lens as possible
-
hmmm....dying lenses huh? think i will look into that option thanks! i have done some small part vaccum forming in the past ... i will look into this option too.
-
thanks for the info on the altmann lens .. might use that if my lens wip fails ..
-
below is a pic of a screen used helmet. you can see they grey colored lens from the inside looking onto the rim of the visor..... this is what im looking for and why i think a clear lens with some tint might work http://forum.bikerscout.net/index.php?app=gallery&image=571

ive seen alot of those ,,, are they grey? from what i have seen these are green tinted .. what color is "shaded" ? are they very dark ? the ones shipped with rs kit are very dark
