emile1138's 3d printed tree hugger WIP
MrPoopie replied to emile1138's topic in ROTJ Biker Scout WIP
They should be black it's probably just the lighting or a bit of fading. -
I still see a measurement listing for the crotch strap in level 1. Does this also mean that we'll see even more sloppy level 1 Scouts going forward with the removal of measurement requirements for strapping and such? This isn't really a question just a concern.

I like the changes and I'm happy we're finally starting to get to a point where this costume seems very close to screen-accurate, especially since most of our knowledge has basically been "bits of info" collected over the years. One that note, people must think we're insane that we care this much about this single costume.

I dig the new Banner. Nice to see the Patrol Trooper up there as well.

Glad to hear it. Keep me updated with how it's turning out or if you have any questions. Most parts are made to be scalable so make sure you measure before you print to get everything to look and sit as good as you can for your size. Scaling down has its drawbacks though, so just be aware of slots for straps and greebles and such. Scaling up is a more forgiving.

I agree with Chopper. Also, anything with low poly designs such as Pepkura would more than likely never pass approval. You might look into a Maker Space in your area and see if you could get access to a 3D printer or other tools that might help you with your build.

My 3D printed armor is finished and available for download but I personally haven't put any armor in for approval yet. It has the potential to be be approved but your finish work will need to be good. You'll need to bondo and paint everything to come out with a perfectly smooth finish so it resembles ABS. Take a look and check it out and see if it meets your needs. All 3D files for armor parts and greebles are available for download except the helmet. https://www.thingiverse.com/MrPoopie/designs

I've made some good progress this past weekend. I don't have a photo that I want to share just yet, but hopefully in a week or so. Many steps in the boot building process take a couple of days to dry or cure between steps so it's a fairly slow moving process even when things are running smoothly. Just checking in and letting everyone know that things are still moving.

I hand wash mine with Woollite or knitting fabric shampoo. I also try to avoid any real scrubbing on the leather parts, my butt flap is removable which helps. Then I roll each part in a towel to squeeze out as much water as possible and hang dry. Seems to do the trick.

Did the holster have cut outs?
MrPoopie replied to Eyeslave's topic in ROTJ Biker Scout Armor/Helmet
After reading through this post I decided to update my holster design and offer one with the cuts and one without. I like the way it looks with the cuts. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2852661 -
I have a 2 piece and made Lancer without any issues. It's all about how everything is constructed and held together. My pants are higher and go to mid stomach and have suspenders attached to keep them from falling. My jacket also comes all the way down and is held in place and covered correctly by the bund and vest. The original reason for the 2 piece was also because I'm very slender and just under 6 foot. This means the coveralls never fit my size and were either way too baggy or too small. I wasn't even able to get the shoulder on with the overalls that were my size. This led to cutting everything in half and altering it to fit my build. I honestly wouldn't recommend this to anyone who doesn't do their own sewing or have someone personal who will sew it for them. It took a lot of on/off and remeasuring to get everything right.

Thanks for the praise. It's pretty cool to see the interest in this project and hopefully it can be turned into something viable for all Scouts to enjoy. The ultimate goal is to make it so that every Scout is a Lancer and we don't even need to have the second classification since everyone will just aim for the top (wishful think, but that's ok).

It definitely couldn't hurt to check them out in person.

Actually I just had reference photos of Sierras to work with, but luckily I've got a pretty good eye for measurements. I made my models from scratch.

I think this is also why people think Scouts are too obsessed with this costume. Oh well, I think we have an awesome community.

I'll be buying boots and resoling them. The original boot needs to be a certain shape to match up with the new soles. I realized boots sole shapes vary greatly, so I need to stick with a certain boot to make things easier and consistent. Also, attaching the upper to the sole takes a bit of work and proper tools. I don't want any Scouts losing their soles mid troop. Vader would not be happy about barefoot Scouts.

It's a specific Polyurethane that was recommended for just this kind of purpose (shoe soles). I do plan on making different sole sizes once I get everything squared away on my test size. My boot size is 11 so that's where I'm starting. I also plan on making smaller womens sizes too since I need to make a pair of boots for my girlfriend.
-
Sorry no cost estimates yet, but hopefully real soon. I do know that I won't be offering the vinyl/leather "whites" that make it a Scout boot though. They'll only be the resoled boots which you can then turn into Scout boots. Sorry, I have too many projects to start making full boots.
-
A while ago I was toying with the idea of making boot soles for resoling boots so that they would have the same look as the original Hi-Sierra boots. Since the original boots are very difficult to come by and getting more rare every day, this project kept swirling around in my head. Today I was finally able to pour my first test sole from a mold I created. Hopefully sometime in the near future these will be good enough that i can start producing soles for the community. I'm still early on in the process but wanted to share with everyone. I feel like this first test was a success. There are obviously things that still need to be sorted out but this turned out better than I expected. I'm always open to suggestions and comments, especially from anyone who has mold making experience.

Would you mind sending me the info about the transistor. That way I can try to get some proper dimensions to correct it. I can then figure out the proper dimensions for the handle too. I don't even bother with direct images through the forum. I just use my Flickr or Dropbox. The image system here is pretty terrible.

Ok. I was hoping to catch you before you started your print, oh well. With the single piece body I was printing mine with the scope side down to minimize the supports. It still wasn't a great method so the 2 part body will probably be better anyway. I have to reprint the blaster in a week or so for my girlfriend so I will be able to see how it works out. I'm always open to suggestions (and criticisms).
-
Try these and let me know how it goes. I know it's going to weaken the point where the screws for the handle guard go in but that shouldn't be a huge deal because the handle guard doesn't really have any stress on it. I adjusted the Holster Guard part (v1.1). Try to print the new part and see if it works better. It should print pretty quickly since there's not much to it. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2852661

I'll double check the blaster tomorrow but I think you may be right about it fitting incorrectly. I think I can just adjust the holster guard part without messing with the holster itself. I'll let you know what I find.

EVeryone loves a good build thread. It might help with any weird issues that arise from putting it all together too. No matter how much thought goes into planning there will always be things that you didn't think of that need a little bit of re-working. I'm almost done printing the rest of the set. I still have to print the chest and back scaled to 85% for my girlfriend though. The only part I have totally finished is the TD, everything else is still just raw prints in a box.
