Got a bit excited and decided to try on all the soft parts I’ve been working on. Other than the butt flap, the soft parts should be finished now. RS Propmasters Red label helmet and blaster (still need to do the needed modifications) WampaWear gloves UnderArmor balaclava Everything else made by me with help the patient guidance of those who have commented on my thread and made tutorials. I have no doubt I’ll be full of questions as I start the armor. But first, sanding!

Is the dog bone glued completely across, or is the glue mainly on the sides of it?

Some tips for keeping your scout costume together while trooping
jennyruth replied to Chopper's topic in ROTJ Biker Scout HQ
Sorry I didn’t see your response earlier. My blaster is from RS Propmasters, and it is pretty substantial. So, I’m gonna go ahead and sew it around where you have it. It seems like that will be the most effective. -
A check on adjustments before I glue anything and make it permanent. And if this helps anyone, I used the basting tape on the right to help hold down the top hem while I sewed it. I used the basting spray on the left to temporarily hold my velcro in place while sewing it. And a walking presser foot made things much easier to deal with in the sewing machine.

Thanks! I’ll make those adjustments! For the vertical seam, can it be hemmed or should it not be? It seems to make it more stable back there, but I can definitely remove that.

I did because I don’t like raw edges 😂 I’m weird. But the tutorial didn’t tell me to do that. I don’t know if one way is better or if they are both just fine, but it seems maybe they could both be acceptable.

Before I make the left boot and glue them both on, I wanted to check this one first. I do have a few areas specifically to ask about. 1) The stitching at the top. The tutorial I am saying said to turn the top down an inch. So I did and then stitched it down near the bottom of that inch, which makes sense to me in my sewing background. However, I noticed later that other pics have the stitching closer to the top. Does this matter? 2) The dog bone. I’m not quite happy with the stitching and will redo that, but does the size look ok? Reference pics seemed to have the length of it touching the toe strap and not the sole, so that’s what I was aiming for. But, it may not be best. 3) I did make a strap to help with boot sag because of the holster/blaster. Would it work if it were attached to the back of the boot where the Velcro is? I’m just having a hard time wanting to stitch the side of my boot 😂 *Helpful tip: If you see vinyl needles in the store, don’t let it fool you for this type of vinyl. Use leather needles.

Gotcha! That makes sense. Thank you!

Thanks so much! Looks like it will be fun to draft those patterns. Does this look right for the padding fabric? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C5QGJ68/ref=ox_sc_act_image_2?smid=A3H6SIB8OTJKIR&psc=1

Gotcha. Are there any up close and personal shots of yours around anywhere?
-
So we make the padded parts or are those things I should buy?
-
I've looked through that WIP but really only saw the completed part, except for a small diagram. It looks about 2" wide, but I can't tell for sure. I'm also not sure what it's supposed to be made of--nylon webbing? seat belt material? The CRL for the Biker Scout is so precise, so this one is throwing me, but I know it's very different because of the source material. I'm trying to help a buddy make his, and I don't want to do it improperly for him.

Are there diagrams or at least measurements for the width of the harness strapping and the padding parts that go on it?
-
Any insight into the sizes of straps and where your got the buckles, and that padding piece, etc? Is it 2”?

Some tips for keeping your scout costume together while trooping
jennyruth replied to Chopper's topic in ROTJ Biker Scout HQ
Under the holster may be the best placement for the strap (mostly likely because that’s where the weight is), but do you think it would also work being attached under at the back of the boot, behind the inner velcro? -
I have a question about the boot shaft placement. If I put the shaft starting about an inch in front of the heel, as the tutorial suggests, it seems to be about in the right place, but the bottom grommets and laces stick up. I don’t know if that will make the dog bone look weird. Or maybe that’s why the dog bone is there? To cover that up? If I put the vinyl so that it covers up those grommets, it’s moved a good bit forward, as you can tell where it’s at compared to the front sole. So, just curious which is the better placement.

Thanks! The way I glued the foam made it a little box so I could put stuff in. I love having pouches or bags! Sometimes ya just need places to put stuff.

This was a quick trial to see if I liked it, so it’s not fancy. The edges aren’t even 100% even. But this is with 1/4” foam. It works pretty well. Because of my size, though, my arms are gonna be bumping up against the sides a lot, so I haven’t fully decided what I’m going to do with them, but this option is a high contender.

I finished up my pouches, hopefully. I didn’t use as stiff interfacing as the first one I asked about. I just made a little insert box out of EVA foam. It kept a softer look but with still some form (and function!). They are secured to the cummerbund via @Chopper’s post about keeping things together on the costume.

Thanks! It took a couple of tries on the forming step before I figured out a rhythm. The thing that made the biggest difference for me was using the heat gun every time (it didn’t take much) as I moved from side to side, working with the vinyl and tacking it down. The gluing helped smooth it down even more.

Ok, making some progress, I think. Other parts have been a pain, but these boots have been scary 😂 I get nervous when there’s little margin for error. Thankful for the tutorial from @cheesewhoopy Except I used Barge contact cement. Also, using a rotary cutter and a long quilting ruler, makes cutting those 1/2” strips a little easier.

Great! I guess I mean where does the bottom edge of the strip go?

Working on my boots and got the toes covered. Interesting fact—the soles that didn’t like the Xacto knife also isn’t keen on thumb tacks hahaha. My question now is, does the 1/2” strip start at the red or blue arrow? Or does it matter?

Perfect. I was guessing 1" for the straps, so that's good to know what you did. These pictures are greatly helpful. Thank you so much! His pouches also look a little more structured than some. I guess there's a bit of a spectrum for them, as seems to be the case for some things. Thanks!

Thinking ahead a little bit. Sometimes I just really like to have a bag with me. This bag seems pretty simple to make, but I had a couple of questions about the CRL. 1) The straps. The CRL calls them “fabric.” What does this mean? Can they be nylon webbing? Or are they supposed to be sewn cotton or something fabric tubes? 2) Strap length. It looks like they are pretty long, but I’m not sure how the bag itself was worn. How long is the bag to be to the wearer?
