So it begins, Bselph Build

I put one fan on the side right near my right eye. It blows air onto the lens and then it bounces onto my face. The cord from the fan goes around the inside of the helmet to the battery pack at the back of the helmet.

Well, I experimented with the belt. I took the nylon belt that came with the kit and removed all of the plastic parts.

That way there is one big strip of the black nylon belt left. It's just a little bit longer than the rubber belt.

The idea of putting snaps inside the squares is what I used. You could sand those down and paint them black. But, with how I did this, they might not be seen at all. It all depends on placement.

Now, I just used the snaps to be able to attach the rubber belt to the nylon belt. (That was fun...not.)

And, in some whacked-out brain-fart I had, I tried to use the sewing machine to add additional support on the belt.

It didn't work very well. (If the lip of the rubber belt was a bit taller, it could have probably been sewn directly to the cummerbund. (The cummerbund would sit well on a belt with a taller lip...that's how the nylon belt came into play...for this way.)

To get a lip to either add Velcro to, or sew directly to the cummerbund, is the reasoning for attaching the rubber part to the black nylon part.

Clear as mud??

Well, since the machine didn't work, I resorted to hand sewing more of the rubber belt to the nylon belt. That gave some more support to just having the snaps hold them together.

Now, on this version, the snaps are just to hold the rubber belt to the black nylon belt. No more than that. For me, I would then sew the cummerbund to the belt.

On the cummerbunds that I have done, I attached the belt and drop pouches directly to it. That way it's all together.

Anyway, here are some pics to add to the confusion.

The top piece is a MrBungle style of belt. Note the taller lip.

This is showing the back of the belt. I let a little bit of the rubber belt hang lower, so the black of the nylon belt doesn't show.

Epic fail with the sewing machine...(Don't try this at home kids!)

Continuing with snaps in certain locations. Usually where a pouch will hang over them.

Pouches on...

Hope that helps a bit. It might not be the perfect solution, but it's one possibility.

Now...breathe....and PUSH!!! :P

Yep, much better idea than I had with Velcro. I like the idea of the lip. issue though is how does it look when you wrap it around your body? Does it warp the belt or pull at the snaps/possibly tearing? Also, how would you suggest attaching to the cummerbund? Would the stitching show if you sewed to the bottom?

I did something similar with mine. I have snaps on both ends of the rubber belt. I then added some snaps to a piece of elastic and I'm using that secure the belt. I still need to find a way to keep the belt from separating from the cummerbund.

It should be fine when it goes around you. It would be attached to the cummerbund, so it should follow along with that. It's a real flexible rubber, though. But, when I put it around me, it seemed okay. It's one of those "not-really-noticeable-except-to-us" kinda things. The snaps just hold the belts together.

Colors;

Looks like the same grey nylon strap that I use.

The grey fabric looks okay to me.

Hey Bselph,

What fan are you useing? I modified mine the case for the batteries to fit in my helmet.

I'll post some pics in my WIP after the E6000 is dry.

As for the colours, I like your choice they look good together... I'm a lil sketchy about mine because I dyed some strips and now they are basicly the same colour as my back material. Might have to get myself a darker material, oh well.

Grumpy, I guess I'm going with the snaps idea for the belt but that still leaves te issue with the rest of the greebs since they are the same "don't-want-to-bond-to-anything" rubber

I'm going to have to order the webbing, since my Joann fabrics only has 1 inch wide and not the one and a quarter. I can find some online for pretty cheap. The gray fabric is actually a curtain material, but not too heavy duty. It was as dark grey as I could find. I found tons of the grey suit like material, but it blended in with the webbing too much.

Tried the buckles and worked fantastic!

That's what I used to put together the entire armor! Plastic did not melt. If you get it, you can get the "kicker" as well. The kicker will cause the ZAP a Gap to cure within 10 seconds. No long wait time of e6000 but also no room for error. Once it is stuck on there, it is easier to throw the piece away and start fresh than to try to pull it off again. I put together a TD with it, and actually just cut away and shimmed an area I messed up on. The glue is actually a CA glue, basically super glue. You can find it at hobby stores and even my local comic book store. Trooperbay.com also sells it with a can of the kicker.

Like I said, 10 second cure time. I got all of the armor put together on a TD within a day since no waiting around for the e6000 to dry.

I will try it tonight and let you know how it goes. Do you have a reference picture of where the greebs go on the bicep? It seems to be different depending on who was building.

Oh, and a little goes a long way with the stuff. It also has the tendency to glue the skin of the tips of your fingers to the armor. I would not use the glue on everything since it has no flex to it, like e6000, so items that will be flexing at the joint are best to be glued with the e6000. Since the bicep greeb will stay stationary, it would be fine, but for the belt, say if you wanted to glue to Velcro, it would eventually break the hardened zapagap.

The zapagap will get hot when it is curing from the kicker, so do watch your fingers. It will cause a chemical burn if you don't watch it.

Last tip for zapagap, the kicker will act as a paint remover on newly dried paint. Once sprayed on, just don't touch and it will evaporate. If you grip it where you sprayed, it can cause the paint to run or rub off.

Like I said, I used it for the entire kit so far and I got all the joining done in this kit in less than an hour, minus all trimming and such.

I bought two types of super glue this morning... Got a test piece on each end of the belt, I'll let you know how it goes (I put it on and clamped it a few hours ago but I'm still in town running some errands, LoL yes I'm checking he forum while I'm out)

As for the fan question earlier, I'm not sure the fan I am going to use. I have the small laptop fans in my tusken, but they are pretty weak.

I want to include a push button operation for the fans in this one, and mount towards the mouth area so u can just reach up and turn it on and off. I left a very small gap on the bottom if the lens, so it does help with fogging (trick picked up working on a TK). I was originally intending to put the fans near the side vents for good air flow but now sure I will have room.

I trialed how I'm setting up my helmet...

The battery pack is going behind my head center level in the bulge, one fan is going next to my right eye facing toward and a little up... So it push's air on the screen and up over the head to cool down (tested this after Grumpy mentioned his placement)

The other one behind my right ear faceing rear in the bulge to push air around the black of the head and out the left ear hole

  • 2 weeks later...

While battling my kids' summer vacation and keepin them entertained, I have managed to get some of the suit done. All that is left are the lines under the eyes (which I still have no idea how I'm going to do), the belt, and cummerbund.

CA glue worked fantastic on the left arm greebs. Thanks Matt for putting up pics for reference.

Question. On the leg pouch, how long should the flap be on the thigh?

Final question. I see how you attached the belt to the black strap, Matt, but couldn't you just add the snaps onto the cummerbund itself and snap into the cummerbund and forgo the blak strap? I think I may take this approach so the cummerbund ends behind the belt.

Alright, got some work done, thanks to mom coming in town and a wiz on the sewing machine, but check out the cummerbund. It looks a little weird in the lighting, grey looks a little light and the dark looks a little black. Have already got the Velcro on for the pouches on after this picture. You can see I put snaps on the bottom for the belt, which has turned out perfectly.

Literately all I have to do is attach the belt buckle and the hanging pouches. The belt is still pretty tacky, so I can't put it on yet.

Check out the bucket. Since the BC kit did not come with the decals for under the eyes, I drew the pattern on paper, then transferred to an ABS sheet I had so I could get a hard stencile. I then put it on top of the large letters and numbers you put on mailboxes, and cut out the piece. I then put the entire thing on the bucket and then VERY lightly, cut strips and removed every other one. Look ok?

The black tank stripe is about 1/8" wide. Black pinstripe tape from an auto parts store works just fine. It goes across the top part of the tank. Maybe a couple of inches from the top and then ends under the small side parts.

After I put it on, I gave it a coat of flat clear. B)

Thanks for the tip Grumps! I did exactly as instructed. Alright fellas, I submitted my pics. Let me know what you guys think. And I realize I'm standing crooked! Twisted my ankle last week, stupidly, while chasing/playing with my daughter up the stairs, and going to Disney this weekend was the dumbest move to make!
