TK-1389 Shore Trooper Helmet Tutorial
Work replied to trooper1389's topic in Shoretrooper Armor/Helmet
Thanks for sharing your process. I think you have by far gotten the closest to accurate color that I have seen yet. You've managed to get that yellow tone that we've been missing. I'm not sure when I'll be able to get to it, but I'd love to see your washing methods with the createx yellow (and please do update what the other colors you washed with were.) tested on the rustoleum ivory silk that many of us have been using as it's probably a bit easier for most to deal with.- 7 replies

So which of the several colors you have there fits as a better description of the overall color? Navajo perhaps? Or should it be Almond? Are those the colors you first think of when you see a shoretrooper? I don't think so. I think most of us when the first pics leaked called it tan. Some called it the sand scout. The CRL, especially for basic approval, is a general guide for GML's for approving costumes. They are not a construction guide for the costume. That is what the boards are for. We collectively push builders towards the right tried and true colors that we have tested and know work as a group. We can not list a specific brand or shade without alienating members in different parts of the world that do not have access to that color. Tan is the best general term for describing the base color of the armor. No one wants a CRL that says " Well it's a kind of yellow-brown-tan- mustardy color" We are all working towards having a great CRL and basis for this costume. If you want to see something changed make a suggestion. Being petty helps no one.

I used sand paper. Personally used 400 grit so I could control how much I was weathering pretty easy but you could use a lower grit. Also used latex masking in a few places.

Drill your rivet pilot hole. Or you could use a soldering iron to poke a hole. May want to put washers in between the rivet and belt.
-
Its just one width of the belt material. I just riveted my stuff to the belt.

Figured I'd post my process over here. Most of this is pulled from my build thread. So here's what I started with. All the base painting done. I used a black undercoat, the base coat is rustoleum ivory silk. First off, I used my airbrush to paint along all the edges/ areas that would be under shadow/ etc. Painted a few random splotches as well. I used a Vallejo game air paint color called Dark Fleshtone. Most of this will be sanded away but it's a nice base to work with for griming things up. The next step is using tamiya weathering powders to add some more grime and dirt. Now for my favorite part of the build. Using a combination of a sharp exacto knife, a file, and some sandpaper I worked my way around the helmet taking off bits of paint here and there, revealing the black paint below. I just went back and forth between a few different reference photos and trying to weather the helmet in similar places. Then after a bit more sanding I wiped the entire helmet down with Strong Ink by The Army Painter. I Just put a little bit down on a paper towel and went over the entire surface. I'm pretty happy with the resulting color.

Yeah that's way too green, almost like they sent you the wrong color.

Coyote Brown is what most are using. These are great diagrams, one thing to note is that the extra large box is actually two pieces. A standard box with an extension on top. That's one detail many haven't noticed yet.
-
It's absolutely close enough for basic. We're just talking about in the future for those that are interested in going that extra step. There's not going to be a brand or specific color of paint listed on the crl. Just Tan/White/Black etc
-
That's the go to colors for now. There's some debate still if we can find a better match for the tan and blue.

Squad leader paint scheme also uses the hip-armor.

Yeah its been super painful scuffing them up. The shin armor does a number on them when you're trooping too. I'd like a second pair just to wear around. I wore them one night walking around dragoncon for a few hours straight. Quite comfy.

I had a good experience with Ardmoor. I ordered with one other person and split the shipping cost, came out to about $130 each at the time. Shipping was pretty fast. I did order them pretty quickly around celebration when they were readily available so the experience may be a bit different now. Hard to say.

They fit as expected. Not too tight or too loose. If you ordered a bigger size than what you usually wear they may be a little loose on you.

Wanted to share a few glove options that are out there. There's two routes you can take. Cheap vs Accurate. A cheap option I found was a pair of Hardy brand gloves from Harbor Freight. Definitely not super accurate, but I used them as temps until my EF gloves got here. I wish the wrist would go up a little higher. I had to make sure my undershirt was pulled all the way down or I would have some skin showing. Endor Finders: Just got these. They are nice and comfy, and one of the more accurate options out there. Imperial Boots also offers an accurate option as well. I haven't had experience with them but I have heard they are nice. Personally I went with EF as they are a bit cheaper than IB.
