  1. Don't forget to WASH your fabric (and iron if necessary) before you cut and sew it! Cottons especially will shrink! I looked at the courderoys as well, but only found it in medium gray. I think they would work better inside-out, using a medium wale, to get a similar texture to the picture. I found cotton gauze in a light gray with a horizontal texture, so I'm trying that first. To give your material strength, try a "stiffener" (bad joke, I know, but can't remember the name for it), in the "fusible" section at the fabric store. Some are "fusible," i.e. you iron it on, others you have to sew to your fabric.
  2. I washed the suede today, but won't get to the pattern yet. I need to finish my pockets and dye everything. I may have plenty of suede leftover. I'll have to see if it looks OK as some of the hide has areas of skin that don't look so good. PS I found a light gray cotton gauze fabric for my cumberbund. I don't know what I'll use for the vertical strips yet. The gauze came from Hancock Fabrics. It is crinkly, giving it a horizontal texture, and I think it will look fine when finished and dirtied. It is the same fabric (different color) that folks use for TPM and AOTC outer robe for Obi Wan Kenobi. I will need to use some type of backing to prevent sagging of the cumberbund, but this is similar to the idea of my armor vest for Fett: The nice fabric on the outside, a firm backing sandwiched in the middle, and a liner material on the side close to the body.
  3. On another pants note, my buddy at Tandy leather hooked me up with some "washable" gray suede for the riding patch on the crotch/thighs. I plan to dye the pants first, then make a paper or fabric pattern, tape it on, see how it looks before cutting/sewing the patch on the pants. I had to buy the whole hide of suede, but at least it was on sale this week. I want to make sure I can wash those pants later when they get sweaty from hot New Mexico summer troops!
  4. Thanks! I had seen the indentations in the fabric that would reflect stitching. I just didn't "see" actual "stitches" indicating the stitch length used, etc. What really helps in this photo, which I hadn't seen before, is that the strips don't go all the way over the top like I was thinking they did. Others have referenced the "MOLLE" vest, but I don't know what that is. My sister and dad are former Marines, but I'm not savvy to the "detail" stuff.
  5. I am in the process of making my pockets also. I took the front pockets off the pants. I noticed that mine had a fold down the length of the one side of each pocket, but the other side length was sewn directly to the pants. I turned the pockets sideways to get more length and measured, then allowing for seams, stitched them, so both sides have that little fold down the length. I added a stiffener (I forget what you call it, but it is in the same section at the fabric store as the Pellon: Heavy Duty (2-sided fusible) "Wonder-Under" that I used to fuse the two pieces of fabric together. (The camo fabric and the stiffener stuff), to the front of the pocket to give it more support. (My Fett pockets sag, and I don't like it.) I still need to make the pockets' flap covers. I had to remove my back pockets to have enough matching material to make the flaps. My shirts (which were worn by someone and are washed many times) don't match my pants, so I really want my pockets to match my pants material so they take the dye the same way. I will sew the pockets and flaps back on the pants pretty much the same way they used to be, just in the right spot.
  6. I don't beleive that CG reference pics would show any stitching detail (on the vertical stripes), would they? Why would the CG guys add in that kind of detail if they didn't have to?
  7. I hear what you are saying and have just posted questions for clarification just on the shirt and pants before I dye them. ("Future KSTx2" thread.) In reading most of the background threads, I have just gotten more confused, bearing in mind that this is an evolving costume. For people like me, I would appreciate if some of the "accurate," i.e. agreed-upon CRL info could be compiled with step-by-step instructions of how to make the parts and what materials to use. I know how hard this is with people coming from all over the world and not having access to the same brands, etc, and having real lives to attend to, but... For example: I don't know how to sew the straps (elastic?) to the vest. Do you sew down both sides all the way to the bottom, or is it loose as I have seen pics of the strap hanging out from the vest, or do you sew one line down the middle. If it is loose in the middle, do you somehow attach the ammo boxes to these straps? So many details not identified. I run my own business, plus see patients all day, plus have a family to raise, so I know how precious free time is to everyone to answer my questions, but I have so many and don't want to screw up on not one, but two of these costumes. Sorry to hijack your thread, sgtski.
  8. OK guys, my shirts and pants have come in. I've been reading up on various threads to find that there is a lot of differing information out there from over the last couple years. I am under the impression that I should Remove the pant side pockets and shirt pockets. Then use that same material to make: 1. the front thigh pockets on the pants, 2. to cover the shirt neck button closure, 3. and make neck seal (or mock turtleneck?) at the top of the shirt. Question: Do I also remove the: A. front "hand" pockets on the front of the pants, B. the funky wide belt loops on the two sides and middle back of the pants, as well as the regular belt loops, C. the back pants pockets?? Also, in reading up on the gray riding patch, 1. Is it a Light OR Medium gray/grey? (I get that it is suede leather.) 2. Is it One patch all the way across the crotch or it Two patches going up to under the cod piece? I have read or have seen both. Please advise!! Thanks!
  9. This can't be half as bad as a Fett!
  10. Hi Everyone, I am beginning my journey toward building a KST for myself and one for my husband. (Yay, he finally wants to troop after five years!) Some of you have already been helpful with my questions. Please look forward to more questions. Thanks, Colleen PS, I know where BrotherHalo lives.
