Hey everyone, so close to finishing my ROTJ scout now, but wanted to ask, how did you all sew your thigh patches onto your jumpsuit, it seems like it would be impossible to do so with a sewing machine without seam ripping the entire leg, and the only way to really do it would be to hand sew it, has anyone figured out a better way?

Thanks

You're right -- you seam rip the outer leg.  Lay it flat, and then sew on the patch and the elastic strap.  When you close up the outer leg, that's your opportunity to tailor it better to you.

I ripped the inner thigh seam.

Then in that case, how do you sew it back together, wouldn't you go through to the other side while attempting to sew it back together?

Turn it inside out and just sew it down the side

As KOTrooper and Bikerscout007 noted, you'll seam rip one of the sides, either the outer or inner leg seam.  To decide which seam, take a look at both.  Generally, there will be one with a simple seam where you cannot see the stitching, and the other will have a a thicker seam where the fabric is folded and you can see a double stitch running the length.  You want to choose the simple seam.  That is the one that will be easy to seam rip and restitch as Bikerscouot007 noted in the above post.

This was a super helpful post with pointing out that a simple seam should be located, as I had not thought of that. I have just started sewing...But my question is and the hardest thing I am having to wrap my head around, is the shape of the patch. Does anyone have a picture of the patch before its installed?

Have you looked at this thread yet? http://forum.501stpathfinders.com/topic/19259-undersuit-mods/

I did, but for whatever reason there is a major disconnect for me. Idk, and honestly think I am at the point where I have overly complicated this for myself and it hurts lol. Was more so trying to find a picture of the patch prior to being installed. more of a "lay it on the table" type of thing.

This is a very old thread, but there's an image in it that might give you a general sense of the shape. Note that the bottom of the patch should not be flat like they have in the template, it should taper and be more rounded at the bottom.

Take a look through my WIP. I have the undersuit mods and riding patch pretty detailed with some patterns to boot. Of course no pattern is a “one size fits all” when it comes to costume creation, but it will give you a sense of the shape and install for you to make your own. Hit me up with any question you may have.

This is perfect. I like your idea of drawing on the patch to get the look right. And I can use butcher paper to trace off the sketch. Great help, THANKS!!!
