New trooper incoming!

Hey all,

I’m finally making my dream a reality, and starting work on my ROTJ Scout Trooper armor set. I’m really excited to get started.

Me and one of my friends are gonna start with the helmet soon, which will be 3D printed. As I’m a total noob when it comes to armor making, I would be most grateful for any and all tips and tricks from people here who have printed their own helmets!!

Thanks and MTFBWY!

Welcome!  We are here to help you achieve your goals!

My biggest piece of advice is get the Jesus Salmeron helmet if you are going the 3D route.  There are a lot of 3D helmets available out there and many of them do not meet CRL specs.  The Jesus Salmeron bucket does for sure.

Here are the helmet requirements.  I have put in bold the portion where most 3d printed helmets have failed requirements:

TB scout helmet.jpeg Helmet
  • Gloss white or semi-gloss and may be lightly weathered.
  • Lens is black in color and obscures wearer's eyes.
  • Decals are screen accurate:
    • Helmet details created with decals on the originals may not be substituted with actual cutouts, i.e. above the snout area or the trapezoids in the back. If these areas are cut out on the helmet, they must be filled and covered with a decal.
  • Snout greeblie is medium gray and the aerator portion is painted black.
  • Snout recess is painted black.
  • Bolts are either flat or have concave centers
  • Helmet is true to the shape of original screen used helmet.
  • Earholes are cut out -- mesh or paint is not acceptable:
    • Area behind earholes inside the helmet is blacked out, either with paint or tape. No interior white should show from the outside of the helmet when worn.

Thank you so much! This is very helpful. Is there a good resource y’all use for the decals and/or internal padding? Is there a specific way the internal padding needs to be done?

Thank you! I’m not sure how much you know about this, but I found a file on Etsy that claims to follow 501st specs and costs much less than Jesus Salmeron’s files. Can you verify?

No, there's no specific requirements for the helmet padding. The original helmets used a 3M hardhat liner. Some people use tactical padding. All you need to do is find something that's comfortable.

A lot of folks like to use the trooperbay decals: https://trooperbay.com/star-wars-bikerscout-helmet-decals

If this is the same helmet that's included as a 3D model, and I'd make sure that it's the same model, then yes, I believe it would be clearable.

I think @MrPoopie was going to check these out and let us know if they meet spec.  Let's see if he chimes in

Awesome. Sorry for all the questions, but is PLA allowed for 3D printing? Or does it have to be ABS?

PLA is fine, but PLA has a tendency to warp in the sun.  I'd recommend PETG.

Chris the Prop Guy's files seem good to go!

They seem to meet CRL Requirements. My main gripe would be with the Chest, it's a little too "egg" shaped instead of being fairly flat on the front and the front "L" sections are a little shallow. Other than that the helmet and armor would meet Lvl 1 CRL requirements. Lvl 2 might work with a different chest and matching back. The TD greeble should also work but the details are a little shallow there too but nothing that should cause a problem that I can see. If anyone wants more specifics just let me know.

PLA, or as Mickey said, PETG are both fine. I prefer PETG for the reasons he said, but it can be a little more finicky to dial in.

To your question, the important point is that the finished product has the appearance of ABS, since that's what they used in the film.

Gotcha. That helps a lot. Any preference/tips for the visor? And what about attaching all the parts?

For the visor material, the hobart welding shield is very popular. You can trim and cut it to shape, then hot glue it into the face plate: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002VECKRO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

When you say "attaching the parts", do you mean gluing the printed parts together?

Awesome! And yes. Like attaching the details to the snout, attaching the front plate of the helmet to the dome, etc

A lot of the little bits and doodads you are going to need can be researched on the Vendor List

Is there a guide somewhere on how to attach these in the helmets? I have no idea where these would go even if I had them.

That's where the various build threads come in.  Besides being the place to start your own, there is a slew of them here:

The most popular one is probably this one, though there are plenty more:

I’m just popping in to say hi and welcome!  You’ve already connected with the armorers and the detachment leader so your in excellent hands.  As you can see, the team is quick to respond and solid in their knowledge.  These guys will see you through to attaining that dream of becoming a live action Biker Scout and you’ll find plenty of support from members of the detachment to cheer and support you along the way.

As these guys have said, ask any and all questions.  We’re all here to help you succeed and look forward to helping you become a Pathfinder!

HY jtshoger

I am also new here and I am printing the armor and helmet on my 3D printer as well.
I'm already excited about how we're going to do this.
Keep your fingers crossed that everything works out as you imagine it.

I also bought the armor from Etsy. Exactly the one from your link.
But if you ask @MrPoopie you can also get his armor for the 3D printer.

Greetings from Austria
