Mike's Scout Trooper Build

Recommended Posts

Yes, we typically recommend velcro on the knees, elbows, and forearms to keep them in place while trooping.

Here's some tips that I came up with from a few years ago:

http://forum.501stpathfinders.com/index.php?/topic/18894-some-tips-for-keeping-your-scout-costume-together-while-trooping/

I know some people use magnets to hold their detonator in place. In the thread above I used velcro, which worked, but I actually ended up taking it off. For my body size, I found that I didn't need anything more than the metal clips and I haven't had an issue since then.

My experience is the same as Chopper’s. The clips are good enough to provide a secure connection for me. I’d test fit it to see how it feels first. If it’s snug you’re probably okay. If it’s a little loose and slides on the belt then try one of the methods described above.

Boots are looking good Mike nice work there! When you start working on the boot shaft make sure you noodle out the closures so you don't get tripped up.

Left boot closure is left-over-right.

Right boot closure is right-over-left.

What I did was use a pen and drew in arrows on the back of the fabric to make sure I didn't make two of the same pieces.

any recommendations for how to get velcro onto the flight suit for the knee, bicep and fore arm armor? are you guys using glue or hand sowing the patches of velcro on? and since its hidden does it matter what color velcro for those all they have here is sage/olive drab...

I'd try and pick up some black if you can. Amazon stocks it.

You can open up part of the legs and arms of you want to machine sew the velcro. If you don't want to get so invasive, you can hand sew it. Do yourself a favor and buy a metal thimble. Velcro can take a little effort to punch through and your thumb will thank you later.

still playing with armor fit...for the bicep and forearm armor im kinda scratching my head at exact placement.. looking at afew approved WIP its all just alittle different imo and the CRL doesnt have a side shot... for the bicep armor if your looking at the wearers side, should it be facing the viewer or rolled slightly forward or back? also the greeble end of it, does that portion of the armor stop above the elbow or at the elbow? the different would be that if the elbow is bent at 90degrees does the white portion of the armor extend past the elbow..meeting the bottom of the forearm? or above..

for forearm armor, over the gloves seems common should it line up with the "v" stitching in the glove?

The bicep should be facing the viewer in the side view. The shoulder bell, bicep, and forearm should all align when your arm is straight down with palms flat against your thighs. Everyone is different “biomechanically” speaking so the distances are going to be tricky to nail down for the bicep as to where it falls.

What I do is base my bicep just below my vest sleeve. The vest should poke out about 0.5” below your shoulder bell then I align my bicep about equal with my sleeve. Mine are tight enough that I don’t have to use Velcro to hold them on. Once I get both of them on I have a fellow trooper look at me from the side to make sure I’m aligned.

The forearm should go just about halfway over the v stitching but that’s a good way to align it. It should be over the top of your hand.

@Retrofire i think i got it right, what do you think? my vest sleeves arent tight enough to hold the bicep armor so its definitely gonna need velcro... might get away with none on the forearm though.. in the second picture things started moving around on me while my wife took pics... but from what you posted above i think this is correct...

Hey Mike, the butt flap does look a little bit wide, though the length is harder to judge without the belt. Generally speaking, I think the length is about in the right ballpark.

I would bring the sides in a bit. Here's an approximate mock up, based on your photo.

thanks man, ive been starring at that CRL booty all morning.. since the riding patch is a different size i was kinda playing with that proportion  but ya looks like from your edited picture i need to trim about an inch+ off the sides.. ill keep the length and if it needs to be adjusted ill do that then since i cant add after its gone..im working on the boots now too. i predict that by next weekend ill be posting up pictures here for submission critiques!

...as soon as i find a rivet gun for the holster...😒

Actually, your butt flap looks just fine to me. Nothing really stands out from what I can see that would prevent you from getting basic clearance. Nice work, Mike!

Please keep in mind that the Level 2 review is done by multiple armorers, who then come to a consensus on any changes needed. Speaking generally I'd say you might want to consider the following three refinements:

1) Your drop boxes are tilted forwards and should be approximately centered on the sides of your body.

2) The legs on your flight suit are baggy and should be tailored to a better fit

3) Your chest armor and back armor seem low on your torso. You may want to trim the shoulder bridges a bit, so you can bring the collar a bit closer to your neck (see the CRL model). I am not certain how much more space you have with your bund height, b/c your arms are blocking the sides, but if the chest and back armor can come up, it should.

Regardless, I would put in for basic clearance now, then worry about the Level 2 stuff after you get your approval. Nice work.

thanks ill definitely correct those.. speaking of approval, i didnt know the ec17 was optional, just reread the CRL. i'm still going to order mine monday from @Darth Voorhees because it looks silly with an empty holster.. i reached out on facebook for where i submit my pictures too before coming here to post this, hopefully its a smooth process...

In the upper right of the web version of the forum, where you see your username, there is a dropdown menu. Select "Account Settings"

On the screen that opens up, click "Change" next to Display Name. You are allowed 3 changes every 30 days.

Just remember that your Display Name is the name you use to login with, so you'll need to use your updated username the next time you log in.
