Helmet Visor Trim Help

Hey gang! Trying to put this helmet together.

 

Need some feedback on the visor for and depth etc.

 

Did I not trim one side enough or did I really mess up the other? Couple things to note the left side shorter visor I didn’t do much trimming on while the right deeper visor I had to trim the half circle so it would fit around the helmet.

 

So trying to decide what to do here. Also any suggestions on melding the 2 parts together? Figure once I get it trimmed right I’d cut the center of each and use spare ABS to add braces to keep them together and add strength.

Looking at the image from the top, the visor half on the right looks fine. The visor half on the left hasn't been trimmed enough.

 

Flip the bigger half on top of the smaller, trimmed half. Trace the cut line from the trimmed half onto the larger half, and then slowly trim parts off until you reach the cut line. Check the fit each time you make a cut.

 

That's correct about adding braces. You glue abs strips under the seam, and then bondo and sand the join.

chopper gave some solid advice.

 

i will add ....

 

~ for the return edge on the visor you will want that to be about 1/2" wide. i would get that correct first so, you can fit the faceplate and for testing/fitment purposes. if not your width will be off and the faceplate wont sit inside the visor correctly

 

~ the top of the ear on the faceplate sits on the bump on the side of the visor

and the bottom of the ear should sit to the back of the bottom of the visor corner

 

~ you will want the width of the helmet to be the same width as your visor at the bolt area.

 

~ there is a few areas to attach the 2 sides together with. one is the faceplate itself... but, you will need a spacer on the top of the visor to get the faceplate in the correct position. the spacer is the main part holding the 2 halves together. it sits in front of the faceplate.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

for reference ...

 

this is an RS spacer ... your WTF spacer may need to be thinner, different radius .. the red square is showing a piece of abs scrap i use in that return edge to prevent that seam from cracking

here is some references i made abit ago for a member here (i cant remember the helmet but its built the same and you have the same issue he did)

 

~ bottom of ear of faceplate lining up with the bottom of the visors return edge -- NOTE, the RIGHT side is correct, left still needs to go back abit

heres the same issue you have with the width of the helmet and visor.

your visor width needs to match the "W" i marked on the helmet.

yellow shows what possibly could get cut away and the blue shows how far the visor needs to go back

Good work. Watch the edge that sits against the cap part of the helmet. If it's too tight it'll scrape the paint when you raise the visor. Work on smoothing out the edges for now, and then give it a few movements up and down once you attach everything and install the elevator screws. Then you can do a tiny bit of trimming to make sure it doesn't scrape.

Ok I think I got this pretty close. Might need to add a little back to inside of video between the dome to make it fit just a little better but feeling better about this.

 

I had to grind down the mounds on the inside of the visor and outside of the dome where they connect to get it to sit better.

 

Does the profile look about right?

There is still a lip on the rear part of the visor in front of the ear holes. Wondering if I removed that wouldnit sir better.

To confirm as well that the faceplate should in fact sit more forward so there isn’t a huge amount of visor above?

I should have left a little more edge along the back part of the visor where it meets dome I think. Seems there’s a bit too much space.

the faceplate sits at and angle so that the top of the ear portion of the faceplate lines up with the horizontal line on the side of the visor and he bottom of the ear portion on the faceplate lines up with the bottom of the return edge on the visor(see 2nd pic i posted above)

 

the gap up top looks close ... you might need to trim more to get the visor to be able to open without scrapping the helmet

You're definitely getting there, Pathfinder. One note on something that stands out to me is how the top of the visor is angled down in images 3 and 4. The line that goes around the helmet done and the visor should be relatively straight when viewed from the side.

 

Here's a side view reference of the RS props screen used helmet, as well as a decent shot showing the space between the face plate and the top of the visor.

i think that is just the way that walt has made his kit ... if you look at the bottom and the top of the ear on the helmet ... those lines do line up with the lines on the visor ... but, the very top line doesnt. i dont think it can be fixed .. well, walt would have to fix his mould, the top half of the visor is to tall

Yeah I did notice there is a slight bend in the visor making it dip down in front instead of a more straight line. I might be able to get close hopefully.

Ok need someone else to look at this before I glue. Right side is still a little off but think once I bond it to the faceplate and screw it on I believe it will even put a bit more.

 

Front needs to be trimmed once it’s on faceplate. But does the visor look appropriate?

your visor sides need to come in more ... there should be no gap betweeen faceplate and inside of the visor

 

from the top view it looks like the visor can come in still abit more(more on the left side than right)

 

the picture below showing red dots and green lines.... the reason you need to trim the return edge of visor is to be able to bring the visor sides to the faceplate, this is very important on the bottom return edge(green lines)

 

~ red dots need to line up -- faceplate tight to visor

~ green lines -- this bottom return edge of the visor needs trimmed to allow the faceplate to sit inside the visor ...

 

trim that visor return edge and youll be able to get a better fit ;)

Thanks for taking the time! I figure when it is glued it will bring that in more.

 

On the inside of the visor is the space for the bolt so I can’t remove much more of that so it sits better against the dome. I already sanded off the one on the helmet so it’s nearly flush trying to get the visor to sit better.

Unfortunately the dome is a bit uneven. So doing best to make visor straight as possible along the top.

 

Will probably heat up the visor and try to make it more of a straight line along the top. Then sand more of the curve where it meets the dome to be more even.

I almost want to drill out the hole on the dome so the bolt depression fits right into the dome. Then use a giant washer inside to hold the visor on.

 

So the visor sits right against it.

Hello! I also have a WTF Scout helmet that I am putting together. This thread is very helpful :) (And I have noticed the same thing: my helmet is not symmetrical either!!)
