Tools needed list

I'm sorry if this isn't the right place for this but I wasn't really sure...

 

Anyways, should be going to local lowes, home depot, etc this weekend to prep for the kit and such.

Just wondering what all I should pick up, I know a few things I should be getting which I will list, let me know if I missed anything!

 

-Dremel (and dremel things..?)

-Exacto knife

-Powerdrill with a few drill bits(?)

-Sanding block, file strip, sandpaper

-Rivet gun and rivets

-Clamps

-E6000

-Paint in Black, Dark Grey (White?)

-Paintbrushes

-Masking Tape

-Hot glue gun

-Heat gun

 

Anything I missed or don't need?

No need to apologize that's what we're here for😀. I would add some small modeling files to clean up your cuts before you sand. You will also need a pair of lexan scissors for cutting and trimming your armor. They are an invaluable tool for that task. You might be able to also find all these items at a Hobby Lobby or a Michael's as well. I used 200 and 400 grit and some higher grit such as 600, 800, & 1000 it just depends on how shiny you want your post cut armor or look. For the drill bits I mostly used a 1/8 and a 5/32 to cut out my pilot slots for the strapping. I would suggest taking a look through some of the build threads that are located in the Biker Scout HQ and that should help narrow down exactly what you need.

Good list. Don't forget washers for your rivets.

 

3M makes this sand paper that's like... rubbery? It's sheets, but you can roll it up, fold it, and it doesn't crack and split like regular sand paper. I found it very helpful:

 

 

I also recently discovered that E6000 comes in Black or white, in addition to clear. I didn't have a particular use for white during my Scout build, but I did get black for my TIE. Just fyi.

 

If you have a Harbor Freight store near you, you can get a decent rotary tool kit with all the attachments and the what-nots for way less than a Dremel©®™.

I'm in the same boat as Shady, tooling up before my KS kit arrives. With this being my first kit, when it comes to doing the strapping, what is needed for that i.e. Velcro, actual straps, etc. I know it's a newb question but I want to setup when my gear gets here.

If you're getting SC armor a lot of those items are included in the kit (i.e. velcro, elastic, etc) so you may want to prepare your tools such as rivet gun, rivets, E6000 adhesive, shoe goo (for boots), X-Acto set (get some chisel blades), 220-400 grit sandpaper, clamps, and other assorted items first. Since I wanted to go Lancer some items I did add was 0.5" elastic for the knees, snaps for attaching my drop boxes (this isn't required for Lancer it's just the way I decided to attach them to the belt). A good idea might be to look through a few build threads and that will help give you a better idea of what is needed.

I'd echo what Retro says above and add Velcro...lots of Velcro!

 

I made my own boots and bund and modified my flight suit (including Velcro to attach the bund too), so went back multiple times to get more and more of the stuff. I also got a lot of different sized rivets as the short ones for attaching the knee elastic, tank and holster weren't long enough to attach magnets to the TD.

Good point Shada! I did use more Velcro than I thought I needed. Both the adhesive and the sew on. You use the adhesive backed stuff on your hard armor but you'll want to have the sew on type for your strapping as it makes a stronger bond and it's less likely to tear off. I got the two inch and just cut it down to any size I needed.

Yeah I've ordered from TB for my build and they were fine. Got my TB decals, paint, and helmet liner from there.

Ohhhh yeah it's armor time! When it comes in I suggest starting a build thread, it really helped me getting pointers and encouragement from the other Scouts.

I've ordered quite a bit of stuff from TB. That said, some of the stuff you could probably source elsewhere and save a few bucks. For my scout, I ordered his decal set (make sure you get the one appropriate for your build! I was accidentally sent a set for a Shadow Scout--but Mike is great and sent me the correct set right away).

 

For elastics and glues, I went to JoAnn Fabrics, mostly. I don't think I used TB for much on my Scout. My Sandy on the other hand....

You also shouldn't use the adhesive backed instead of the sew-in kind. The adhesive will foul up your sewing machine.

 

On the subject of adhesive-backed velcro, get the Industrial Strength. It refers to the glue, not the hook 'n loop. The extra strength will help keep it stuck in place much better! I skimped on v.1 of my Sandtrooper, and my shins popped open halfway through my first troop.

You don't need split rivets for a Biker Scout. The helmet liner you can get out of one from Home Depot. Velcro and such you can get online or at a fabric store.

 

Magnets aren't particularly useful on a Scout build. You would use them, for example, gluing coverstrips on TK armor.

 

A cheap set of spring clamps from Harbor Freight will be all you need for assembly on a Scout. I used them to hold the greeblies in place while the glue dried, and also for holding the belt sections together (SC Kit). My helmet was pre-assembled (Altmann), so I don't have experience putting together a kit bucket.
