Which boots?

Recommended Posts

Well Kashyyyk Trooper is going to be my first build and I'm going to have to sell some of my diving gear I don't use anymore to afford the hard armour, and I'll be making best use of what I already have for as much of the soft gear as I can.

Starting with boots. These are 2 pairs I've gotten from work and I'm trying to decide which would be best, assuming either of them are workable at all. I figure I can sand back the ones on the left and get a nice tan colour on the upper and the sole, but might need to fill in some of the tread. I think the ones on the right have the better "chunkier" look but with need painting to get the colour right.

Opinions?

The lugs on those look a bit slim and I would be worried about cracking the sole. With the time, effort, and paint needed to make either of those right, I would just pony up the 20 bucks and go to Walmart for a cheap pain of work boots with bigger lugs. You need to make the scoop portion and the ones you have are a little too thin. In the long run, you may be able to pass with either of those depending on who approves the costume but in the end they may make you grab another pair. I ended up buying a very basic construction boot and took the dremel to it.

Thanks for the reply mate. Appreciate it. As I'm trying to do this for the least cost possible I went with boots I already had. There's no Walmart in Aus and even the cheap work boots are $60-80. I've got a pair of jungle boots that some people have used, but they're the black version and not the tan. Oh well back to the search.

Because money is an issue I've thought about doing a cloth uniform, but IMO KT is one of the best outfits and I can relate to it . I actually can't understand why it's not a lot more popular.

I know, right???

I'd go with the boots on the right. The sole looks pretty close.

Just a little bit of work and painting.

(Unless you found something else.)

Thanks Grumpy. I've done some more searching and I can't find anything better for at least about Aus$80. I'll have a go at getting more arch into the arch and was looking at using some homemade Sugru type stuff to build the arch up higher externally as well. I think getting the sole tan is going to be the biggest challenge.

True. Paint doesn't adhere well to rubber. But, do your best and call the rest "battle damage."

Hey Sac,

I got my boots from K - mart here in Brisbane, a pair of $29.00 with tan sole work boots. i cut the sole's to get the look of the movie boots and painted the boots with white boot spray i got at a local boot repairer from a shopper center. If you have any trouble just get me on the redback forum, as i don't really get on BSN very much, but i can tell you where i got most of my stuff and also where to go.

cheers Bigmac.

Thanks for that Teiwaz. Yeah so I had another look in Target and BigW and found these for $35 and $29 respectively. They seem much more workable. Preferences?

The lower pic looks like a good option. Are you gonna go white on it? Or light tan/almost white looking? What dremel bit will you use to shape the sole?

Yeah because the top one had fewer grooves in the tread and the movie screen shots show only 3 or 4 grooves and I'm an anal retentive perfectionist, I was leaning towards them. I like the general look of the bottom ones though.

My plan was to play around with a silicone mix (google "oogoo" ) using coloured silicone as the base and use it to fill in extra grooves in the tread and build up the arch externally. If there are blemishes, as Grumpy suggested, weather it and call it battle damage.

Plan for the painting is to use white but not go heavy enough to make it solid. Still leave a hint of tan/khaki coming through.

I've bought an Ozito brand rotary tool to use. It's a cheap brand but does the job well enough according to the guys at Redback Garrison, and is about 1/3 the price of a genuine Dremel. Will likely use one of the larger round sanding wheels, if that makes sense.
