  1. He's been much more chatty since I told him I got it, said I understood it taking longer (but I didn't need it assembled), left feedback and mentioned I reviewed it here. He tried to recommend armor and helmet makers if I planned to go 501st. Of course, I already have that info, but it was nice to get some communication after 2 weeks of single sentences about it being shipped, when it clearly hadn't been.
  2. The helmet originally was so big that a KS could practically fit inside it, so your files worked out great. And the only other pep file I found was sized for Legal Paper, wasn't as detailed, yet was more complex to assemble (a friend built one), you did me a huge favor. Thanks again. Like I said, I've got a KS coming, so I won't be working on this again for a couple of months. Also, I need to quickly build some stuff that'd be easier to sell because I've got a table reserved at a local expo in a month.
  3. Wow... that sold for $11? I've watched a few of them since I started the scout build in December. They always start at $4-$5, but shoot up to $80 or more by the end. That's why I thought $35 for this cast was a good deal.
  4. I've been building from that pep. You can see my progress in the "fiberglass helmet review" thread. I was trying to replace a face and visor on a very bad ebay purchase. I used your pep to make visor and snout, then sort of free formed sintra to make the rest of the face. I mentioned in the thread that I would share the file, but I didn't know who made it and wanted to give credit. Thanks a lot for your work. Just a bit of criticism, I found that I had to shrink by 10% to be accurate. I've done a lot more to the face... I probably should have started from scratch because trying to make it fit on that dome is what's slowing me down. Also, I've ordered a KS helmet, so I'm not in a hurry to fix this right now.
  5. Ok, took a few minutes to get over the excitement of holding a new toy I'd been waiting 2 weeks for. Now, I can look at it more closely. Here's some detailed pictures of the flaws. There's nothing that is visible from more than 2 feet away, and I still recommend buying one if you can be patient with his shipping and you are aware that it's the Kenner blaster and not 100% accurate. A wonky seam line from a 2-part mold Could have been chipped, or it could be bubble/air pocket from the mold here behind the barrel tip. Some weird roughness near the hand guard, possibly from clay or filler he used making the mold. And my favorite part, you can tell he didn't remove the sticker before making the mold
  6. Here it is. The picture on the auction said "I can also assemble and paint, just ask" so I assumed I'd be getting the 2 white resin pieces. Maybe that's why it took him a week and a half to ship it. It's impressive. It's solid, heavy, and I don't see any bubbles. There's scuffs from sanding in a few places. I don't like the screws (or the casting of the screw in the handle). I have the accurate scope ring here and a resin scope that I made with less of details. I really wish it wasn't assembled already, but it looks like just 3 screws to take it apart. I do recommend it if you want a Kenner blaster and don't want to pay over $80 for one. I believe he now has one for sale on ebay (username: 5xxicemanxx5) for $40 with free shipping. He did ship it from Orlando, FL. I guess the week and a half between when I paid and when he shipped it (the USPS sticker says it was shipped Jan 30) was time spent assembling, sanding and painting. I guess if you don't want that done, you should message him when you pay. I'm going to remove the trigger, some of the details (like the raised area for ROTJ decal), put scope ring on it (possibly build a rail so scope ring is removable) with either my scope or this one modified, and make a mold in a week or so. I hope to pull at least 2 for the other guys here in town building scouts so they don't have to do the exact same modifications as me. If it turns out ok (I'm still not great at 2-part molds), I might put some up for sale with the disclaimer that there are definitely better options available in the trade forum here. Mine will have some bubbles though. I don't personally have an ethical issue with recasting this since it is not an original sculpt, but a recast itself of a commercial product.
  7. Damn, my mom was in town all day. She actually sat down at the sewing machine with me to help out with my cummerbund fit and some adjustments to my Fett. Unfortunately, we spent most of the afternoon out of the house. I have a tag in my mailbox saying I need to sign for a delivery. I work til 2am, but I'm gonna try to get up and make it to the post office before noon tomorrow and hope it's my blaster. That would make sense. If eBay reported it was shipped Wed, and it's coming from Florida to South Carolina, it should only take 2 days. I still don't understand why he told me it had already shipped last friday, or why he even would have waited that long since that was already a week after I'd paid for it. Hope to post some pictures tomorrow!
  8. Do the scout vests have to close with velcro? I just replaced the modified tshirt vest on my Fett with a much more accurate vest, but where I had 3 snaps on the old one, the new one is velcro. Using velcro means I'm always gonna need someone to help me get dressed because I can't close it perfectly every time and don't want the actual velcro showing.
  9. Still no sign of it. How weird is it that he's selling that cast part off the front of the Aliens motion tracker? I had to look it up to see where that part is. That's such a minor piece and completely useless without the rest of it. Is he building one himself and casting each part as he finishes it to pay for the rest? I definitely think the blaster itself could work for me. I think my scope is gonna look better on it though, possibly with the accurate scope ring I have here. There's a lot of detail on the Kenner scope that I don't see on a lot of the blasters, like the raised spot where the ROTJ sticker was.
  10. Just noticed an email I'd missed earlier. My item was "marked as shipped" at 11am on Jan 30. I paid on Jan 19. Estimated delivery is Jan 25-31. I'm hoping this was just an oversight. If I haven't heard back from him by end of day Jan 31, I'll be threatening him with feedback or ebay's dispute resolution. I'll be sure to post here either way. I hate how hard it is to get info on suppliers like this.
  11. The "estimated delivery" window on ebay is thru tomorrow. I messaged him last week, got a reply last friday that said "it has shipped." I messaged him earlier today and haven't gotten a reply. I feel like it's probably coming from China or South America and he just registered his account from Florida to make it look more appealing. I've seen a repainted kenner and a pro-sculpt side by side. I know the Kenner is a little big. It's still accepted for 501st, right? Like I said, it's a better starting point than a block of lexan, a 2x4 and some sintra. That's where I am right now. And I believe the scope I've sculpted from a partial cast of the Hasbro Rebel Blaster is the correct size, so that'll be good reference for modifying the Kenner.
  12. -Edit- Instead of starting a new thread, I'm going to post here about my mods to this recast Kenner. To anyone new here, this started with me being worried that it had taken so long to get the blaster after paying for it on eBay. After you get past the few posts about that, you'll see that I got it (post #13) and started working on making it more like the screen used blaster (still bigger) and making a mold of it. -Original Post- Anyone ordered 5xxicemanxx5's Kenner recast blaster? I thought $35 and free shipping seemed too good to be true. It says it ships from Florida, but I'm in South Carolina, and 2 weeks after paying, I still haven't received it. I see he's already got a new one listed as $40 with free shipping. He also offers to paint and assemble it for a fee. Things like that, to me, imply he's at least a valid seller, and someone who's regularly shipping products. By that, I mean it don't sound like someone who had a kit lying around and didn't get around to building it, then decided to sell it because they need money (who may take their time shipping it and not care about feedback scores or repeat business). I had been working on my own sculpt because the $70-$150 versions I've seen for sale are a little out of my price range and I have a lot of free time. After finishing the scope, I was about to start on the pistol itself when I came across this. Figured I could save myself some time. I plan to modify this (trigger, etc) and combine with the scope I've built (got accurate mounting ring), then recast as a budget alternative. Hope it shows up soon.
  13. That's good to know. I actually have a 4x4 sheet of ABS in the garage right now, unfortunately, it's black. Does that work on regular styrene too? I've got lots of scraps of white styrene from my many failed attempts at learning to vac-form.
  14. I'm holding a friend's KS helmet now (helped him swap out snout greeble). He bought it assembled. The face is kinda crooked and that double sided tape is gonna make fixing it tough. Am I right in assuming that 501st requires filling and sanding the seam around the dome? That's gonna be tricky. With ABS being so flexible, how do you not have that splitting every time you put it on?
  15. The snout greeble I've got is black. I'm thinking Painter's Touch Winter Gray spraypaint is correct, right? I think it's the same as Rustoleum's Smoke Gray (Painter's Touch is made by Rustoleum, but supposedly better for plastic and comes in more gloss bright colors).
  16. Nobody answered the question. Would these pass? I don't like the idea of one person being the source for a part. I know everyone says SA does a great job. I'm not arguing that. It's just weird when there isn't a licensed version of something, or a found part that was used in the original costume, to have only one supplier. I tried joining a completely different costuming group over a year ago, and started by building everything I could and asking where to get the rest. Like here, a lot of this was done via PM rather than out in the open because of trademarks and licensing and whatever. I was told that none of the parts I'd built would get me in, and that there's one supplier making almost all of the stuff that's specific to these costumes. That supplier was a little overpriced, and my home built parts were just as good. It was a little while before I realized most of the moderators worked at the prop studio that supplied all of this. That's shady. Starting a costuming group, building it up to a point where people want to have the highest quality costume to join, and then making sure that only people who buy their costume parts from you can join. I am not suggesting that's what's going on here. I do not think that at all. It just bothers me when people get used to one supplier, long waits, and the implication that buying from anyone else won't be acceptable.
  17. Isn't the bund supposed to be a little shiny. I'm sewing mine now with cotton liner and "nylon flag material" from Hancock Fabrics on the outside. It'll probably be too shiny and need some weathering to tone it down. I'm doing pouches in white muslin and off-white muslin. Figure I'll pick between the two when the whole suit's put together. I've made so many of those pouches (there's 4 on my Fett and 2 on my Cobra Viper) that they're 2nd nature to me. I just had to bump the pattern up by about 1/2".
  18. I'd like this answered, too. When I spoke with a couple of scouts in my garrison last month, they said that the suede and vest aren't required. They both registered 501st in 2010 or earlier. It's listed in the CRL on the 501st site now, so that means it's required, right?
  19. A little progress... I got the sides of the bucket trimmed and started cleaning up so that an accurate shaped visor will fit properly. It's tough because the helmet itself wasn't pulled very well. It's warped on the bottom. The more I put into this thing, the more I think I could have just sculpted or built a new one from pepakura.
  20. Looks like that site only sells to UK, but they do sell silicone catalyst separately. I guess I gotta do some more searching.
  21. Checked the mail... sweet, I got my DVH nose greeble casting! Here's another example of the scale of this helmet being really far off!
  22. Ok, so the Pepakura looks pretty accurate. It's very detailed. I would share it, but I have no idea who to credit, and you guys can find it searching over at therpf.com. And here's what I've done with the fiberglass Skywalker214 helmet... Unfortunately (or fortunately) the pepakura build fits the skywalker helmet, which means it's way too big to be accurate. Also, the visor from the KS helmet fits completely inside this one. But I'm thinking that this visor, when finished (threw a ton of Bondo at it today) could be used to make the skywalker helmet a much more accurate shape. It sits a little far forward and doesn't quite fit where it should (the back still isn't perfect). I also have some work to do on the face. After cutting out the eyes and squaring off the top of the nose, it's looking a lot more like it's supposed to. I still have a lot to trim off the front of the nose, and some building on the brow and sides. It kinda looks like they just threw fiberglass over the Rubies (or DonPost) helmet and then made a mold of that. It's like a bigger less accurate version of the Rubies, but with some extra angles thrown in to make it look sharper in eBay pictures. If I scale down the pepakura (5-10% maybe), I can get something accurate. Or if someone wants an accurate, but oversized helmet, maybe I can make a trade. I'm feeling both better and worse about this project. It looks like I found a way to salvage this thing. But I'm not much closer to having a useable bucket for me. Also, Moncal and StudioCreations have not responded to emails (or PMs here) lately. Anyone know what's up with that? I still plan on ordering armor from SC, but was thinking MonCal for the helmet if I can't get something usable myself.
  23. Can you buy Part B of the silicone mold from Smooth-on separately? I can't find it on their site. If I keep "cheating" to get thicker silicone that cures faster, I'm gonna run out of Part B real quick. I think I'll spend the extra money and get the 1:1 mix next time.
  24. I found 2 pepakura files for the Scout helmet while searching RPF. One is set for 11x17 printing and the other for 8.5x11 (this one is much more detailed). I've never been patient enough for a full pepakura build, but I've used parts as templates to cut stuff out of sintra. I decided to take the more detailed of the 2 files and print it out to see if I could get something useable. I got some good pulls out of my vac table this week. I started thinking that maybe if I had some size reference, I could combine parts of this helmet with vac pulls of pepakura build and a little hard work to get something accurate enough that I could either wear myself or perhaps sell to a heavier trooper. You know how silly a v1 KS helmet looks on a big scout. This afternoon, I used the visor parts of the paper pepakura to cut/shape a sintra visor. I found out last week that there's a guy building a scout here in town and I compared my sintra visor to his KS helmet. It's huge. It completely fits over the visor of the KS helmet (I know KS is the smallest of the approved helmets, but it's still very big). So I have to resize the pepakura. But this visor build is not a complete waste... if I reshape the fiberglass nose and forehead, with this visor, fit it to the fiberglass helmet, I could just have an oversized but accurate helmet. I'll try to get pictures up soon.
