Overwhelmed! Correct Technique? Where do I begin?

Alright, so I just got some SC armor and I am generally happy with it. But I keep looking at the armor and am overwhelmed with all the stuff I have to do. I don't want to cut something and then realize, "oops, cut the wrong part, thats not where the straps go through." Anyway, so I've done exhausting research and I just want to double check all my stuff. And can somebody suggest a way to tackle this massive project (I am horrible at planning, I am a do everything at once person, and this really isn't that sort of project). I suppose I'll post pictures of what I have, then type what I THINK that I have to do to make it ready, and please correct me or suggest a better way that I should go about doing what I am trying to do. Thanks so much in advance!

!!!!!Cant post images, they are not working, Im a newb, any help?!!!!!

Should I use glossy or matt sealing after I paint?

Shoulders. I DON'T KNOW where I cut the place for elastic. I tried to look at screen grabs but it doesn't look like they used straps to connect the shoulders. The only way I see them working is if I cut a slot up just as it starts to curve up.

Upper arms. I have to attatch those two T things. I think I have to poke holes in the armor and put those staples through where the T starts to get big, and put it threw the armor and close the staple. Then use black elastic to fit it on my arm.

Forearms. Alright, so I think all I have to do is put black elastic to attatch to my forearm.

Alright, so the chest piece. So paint the recessed square on the left medium grey. I also need white elastic to join this on the side. I also need white cloth to go over the top parts. I think thats it for this.

The back. Alright, so the tank doesn't fit on snugly, I think I'll have to trim it down on the top, or should I trim the back armor? I have to connect this to the front with white elastic, but that is all I think.

The tank. Tons of work. It doesn't fit snugly onto the back, so I think I'll have to trim it. I will also have to paint on a stripe in an n shape for the trim. I also have to paint six long lines on the RIGHT?? side of the tank. (there is a screengrab, but isn't that one reversed?). I paint the six lines on the right, correct? And for the top. I have to ??glue?? or ??bolt?? the black thing on the top. I have to ?glue? the black circle thing in the ?middle? of that hole opening. I have to ??paint the little circle on the right half of the big circle white??. I also have to paint the top of the line on the middle of the big circle red, correct? This is the thing I am most shaky on, I've seen and read different views on the tank.

Belt. Alright, so the belt. So I am not supposed to bolt the belt pieces together, correct? I am supposed to ??glue?? ?straps? onto each part and ??glue?? those onto the main belt? I then cut two holes and put buckles at the indents where the V is on the front. Do I do this by cutting on top of the indent and then on the bottom, leaving a part of the indent there? I am really unsure on how to put the buckle on, I've read and seen cutting the whole thing out and also just cutting one little hole and puting a rod through the end to hold it in place. I also don't know where to attatch the buckle to the smaller pieces. Very unsure about he belt.

Side Leg/belt. So I don't know how to cut the two holes on the sides of these things in order to attatch the buckle, but that is all I have to do for those things. Correct?

Thermal detanator? Thats the thermal detanator right? I think the tube is a little short, is that okay, or is it just me, is it normal? Do I ??paint?? the right part of the recessed area or do I cut two black plastic cloth pieces and ??glue?? them on? I got two zip ties with the set, do I put a zip tie through the middle and back to connect the tube. Looking at a screen grab and its negitive, do I put some sort of cut circle cloth on the left or do I paint it or do I??? Then a ??glue?? two white caps on the end of the tubes. Is the tube supposed to be centered or is it supposed to have more on the left? My time doesn't have much room, in all, only 12 ridges are showing (6 on each side). I paint the recesses of the tube black. Quite a bit for this thing, did I leave anything out? How do I attatch the thermal detanator to the back of the belt?

Knees. Black elastic to strap it through ont me knees through the designated holes.

AND the holster: There are too many pics, I've reached the limit, so I posted it 5 posts down.

Here is what it says BUT REMEMBER I posted the picture five posts down:

"Holster. So I bolt the top to the other piece of blastic and through the boot with two bolts. Do I leave the bottom to hang? And do I have it correct that I don't need the weapon, but if I do have it, it needs to be accurate? The college I am going into doesn't allow weapons or things that look like weapons (the pirstol isn't orange and wouldn't be allowed)."

Alright, so thank you so much for being pacient and reading through all of that and thank you SO MUCH in advance for all of your help! I look forward to meeting you all through my interactions on bikerscout!

First step...deep breath, relax and count to 5! It's going to be okay! I caught your other post on Photobucket. Once you correct the images we can try to help guide you. :)

The advise I used (and it was very good idea) is to start with the chest, and work out from there. Look at the pictures from the movie. It was very overwelming for me too....at first. But once I started (on the chest piece) everything just started falling into place and it turn out very easy IMHO.

Get those pictures up and we can help.

Alright, I'm working on the images now. Thanks for posting thi instructions, they came with the armor from SC, but there are a couple things I heard that the instructions were wrong, a) that it says to use rivets to attatche the best pieces together and I heard that was incorrect (and that is something that you can't fix once you pop a hole in it and B) that it shows two zip ties when I am supposed to only use one. I wasn't sure how many other errors there were in there, and I was concerned there could be other errors which could permanently mess up my armor so I didn't want to follow those instructions. But ya, I'm trying to fix the images now, thanks for the support guys!

Ryan, lemme break out my scout and I'll PM you with pics of individual parts so you can see how I put together my SC armor. Will do that after dinner, tonight.

For the record, you don't need to paint the armour or put any sort of clear coat on it. The lines and stripes on the tank are usually just black vinyl pinstriping that you can find at an auto store.

It sounds like you're really overwhelmed but just remember to breathe.

As far as the bicep pieces go, I'm not sure what you mean by putting in staples. Generally, you just paint and then glue the t-bits on top of the plastic in the t-shaped recesses. The black elastic is usually just sewn in place.

The shoulder bells should not have any slots cut into them for strapping. If you have some loop velcro and some sticky hook velcro, you can get the looped side sewn to the shoulders of your flak vest and stick the hook side on the inside of the shoulder armour. That's all I've ever done. Just make sure you have enough on there and it'll stick very well.

Overall, the best advice I can give you is not to rush things. Just start with one piece at a time, take your time and try not to get stressed out. It's supposed to be fun! :D

  • 2 weeks later...

Ryan, you sound like me a few weeks ago, a lot over wheimed after looking at all that you need to do. However, once you start it, it goes quickly and as long as you tackle each piece one at a time, you will be surprised at how easy it goes together. I'm about 90% done with my SC armor. The one hurdle I am having difficulty with is how to attach the tank. I know that after reading through some threads, the way in the instructions is incorrect since you can only use 2 rivets. So I'm likely gonna need to ask for help/ideas from the kind folks here on how they all attached their tanks. Other then that, I have found this build to be fun and not as difficult as I once thought it would be. Just take your time, ask questions here or review threads to see what others have done and most important, have fun.

Laters,

DZ
