My adventures in Scout Armor

Recommended Posts

Hello.

I recently bought an SC kit and have been working on it.

Other than the tinkering with my TK kit (restraping etc) this has been a new experience for me.

I have a ways to go - but I thought I would share my progress.

I have a KS helmet on the way and cumberbund/vest/pouches on order.

I made my boots today (whew) - not perfect but I'm still pretty proud of the work.

I have some adjusting to do (one box in front hangs a bit lower than the other) but for the most part I think I'm on my way to approval.

Take a look and let me know how I'm doing.

Thanks!

Wow I look fat without a cumberbund - that tiny chest armor looks pretty silly!

Hmm.. the pictures are rotated in photobucket - not sure what I did wrong here.....

coming along nicely. a couple thoughts for you to consider...

Small fixes:

1) the space between the "shoulder bridge" and the shoulder bells should be about an inch - maybe two. this will allow you to move more freely, match the film more closely, and leave plenty of room for the bicep plates.

2) shorten the thigh box webbing in the back - will help them hang more evenly across your thigh and prevent them banging about during troops

Bigger fixes:

1) you riveted or snapped the webbing on the front thigh boxes? those should come out as they don't appear in any film stills...just stitch them so they keep in place.

2) it looks like you have two rivets holding the belt to the white webbing in the back. if i'm not mistaken, the CRL permits only one...but double check that

3) the closure on your right boot is incorrect. currently your boots both close to the right. so you'll need to revers the velcro on your right boot. both boot closure seems need to be be "facing inward".

Future things: basic clearance will require the riding patches and the elastic thigh straps, and the additional strap on the knee pad, and the "mudflap" (though this may be part of the soft parts you ordered); cut the pattern into the boot heels

hope these are helpful. it feels great to have something on and wearable...doesn't it!? i remember being at this stage and almost tasting my first troop...

great progress...looking forward to more updates

Ok - shoudler bells higher (I think I put the elastic on too tight and am having trouble sliding the shoulders up where they need to be)

Thigh boxes - I haven't really adjusted them yet - was waiting until I tried it on (which I have now!)

I riveted EVERYTHING as I can't sew and thought this would be easier - I can't get away with those rivets if I paint them white (which I have now)?

The page on Biker Scout approval doesn't say anything about how many rivets or about not riveting the straps in front - where do I find this info?

I got the suede for the mudflaps etc... not sure how I'm gonna do that though!

I knew something was weird with the boot velcro! The tutorial said "remember there is a right and left:" and I couldn't figure out how that made a difference!

Thanks for the tips!

I painted the gray bar on the front and painted all of the rivets white...

Will do more work and send updated pictures soon!

hi...

i just took a look as well and don't see the 1 or 2 rivet posted. i sent a PM to 4505Marcel asking if that was being reviewed...so watch for it. but i definately remember it saying one. you can also look at the screen caps and pics from the MOM...they show 1 rivet. this isn't always strong enough, so i did some support by adding plastic inside to help give it a bit more strength.

check with your garrison's GML...but i don't think that painted rivets will work on the thigh straps.

if you used GOOP to secure the velcro on your boots, it'll clean up pretty easily. i ended up having to shorten my boots, and had no problem cleaning it up...so you should be able to redo that with little difficulty.

my elastic was too short on my shoulder bells as well. i went ahead and made lots of length as i knew i would need more "give" once i added the vest...

keep up the good work. let me know if i can be of any more help

If for some horrible reason I can only have 1 rivet - what do I do? I mean, there's already two holes in the belt! The webbing isn't a problem but the abs is! I would have some kind of horrible attack if I had to replace the belt!

I redid the boots today - and attached the holster - not much of a problem.

Reworked the elastic on the biceps using a snap on one side and sticky velcro on the other - they should be long enough to slide up now!

It's a good thing too - I forgot I still have the vest to put on!

Thanks!

i wouldnt do anything to those rivets until there is a post or answer from marcel...if you do need to have only one, it will involve removing both and centering the one rivet. it's a pain, but not too complicated. i messed up and misplace where i drilled a hole when building my helmet. had to repare that. if you have to go to one, i'll let you know how i did it...

Great work so far! Couple of comments: I agree with Chimei on the belt front; the webbing should loop through slots or openings in the belt "buckle" portion. You don't want to rivet that part. For the belt rivets in the back, it's (1) rivet on each side of the belt back for Lancer approval. For general clearance you should be fine.

Here are some updated pictures.

Still need to adjust the ammo boxes and get rid of the rivets on the webbing in front.

Adjusted shoulders.

Added holster (and blaster!)

Fixed Right boot.

Painted rivets and gray box on front.

Still need to attach mudflap/straps/saddle.

I guess I need to clip off or hide the zipper pulls on my legs.

Any further advice is always appreciated!

Looking much better Chris! Great work so far. In the last pic closeup of your boots, the suit zippers are present. You will need to hide or remove those guys. Other than that, I would also make sure to place the forearms on top of the gloves. :)

I would only add that you have the forearms and the biceps reversed. The bicep has the T-bit. Just flip them. And remember that the small "dots" on the T-bit need to face forward when worn. Shoulders look better and leave the space on he other upper arm that will be crucial when wearing your flak vest
