elwyn5150 Posted December 3, 2011 Share Posted December 3, 2011 I really hate how strong these alice clips are. It's funny because I've bought a 1/2" drill bit but it didn't find my old hand drill. So I bought a new cheap cordless drill (10 mm) and a 5/16" drill bit. A guy at the store joked that it'd be easier to just hire a contractor. Umm... I've never owned an electric drill before. What torque settings should I be using on the clips? Is there a "best" speed of rotation to drill the hole? I don't feel like I am doing this drilling very effectively. Dart Posted December 3, 2011 Share Posted December 3, 2011 Just go slow and make sure you have a couple of nice, sharp bits. Alice clips are usually made from spring steel so they're extremely resilient. As for the torque setting, put it to the max setting, push down on the drill and don't go too fast. Good luck! Guest jm667 Posted December 3, 2011 Share Posted December 3, 2011 You should use a vise if you can. When the drill bit breaks through it can hang and it will spin the clip. Use 3 in 1 oil to lubricate the bit. I prefer to use high speed and a lower torq setting so if the bit hangs on the clip it wont spin on the bit and turn what ever you are using to hold it(if you don't have a vise) in to a missile across your living room or garage. However... at work, they have had contractors come in to do renovations and I asked one of them to do the holes using the drill bits I bought and they had professional quality drills and couldn't do it. I'm hoping that I don't need to buy another $30-40 worth of drill bits I probably won't use again. The instructions I got with my kit from MC say it's a 1/8" hole for the rivet head on the "front" of the clip, and 1/2" on the "back" side. Worked much better and is actually more accurate. Those clips drove me nuts too. I think when i used them, i just used a cutting wheel on my dremel and cut a square hole through with that lol. On the accuracy point though, is there anything that says we MUST use the clips for Pathfinder approval?
