Alice clips are driving me nuts

I really hate how strong these alice clips are.

 

It's funny because I've bought a 1/2" drill bit but it didn't find my old hand drill. So I bought a new cheap cordless drill (10 mm) and a 5/16" drill bit. A guy at the store joked that it'd be easier to just hire a contractor.

 

Umm... I've never owned an electric drill before. What torque settings should I be using on the clips? Is there a "best" speed of rotation to drill the hole? I don't feel like I am doing this drilling very effectively.

Just go slow and make sure you have a couple of nice, sharp bits. Alice clips are usually made from spring steel so they're extremely resilient. As for the torque setting, put it to the max setting, push down on the drill and don't go too fast.

You should use a vise if you can. When the drill bit breaks through it can hang and it will spin the clip.

Use 3 in 1 oil to lubricate the bit. I prefer to use high speed and a lower torq setting so if the bit hangs on the clip it wont spin on the bit and turn what ever you are using to hold it(if you don't have a vise) in to a missile across your living room or garage.

I haven't tried touching them myself again since I made that post.

 

However... at work, they have had contractors come in to do renovations and I asked one of them to do the holes using the drill bits I bought and they had professional quality drills and couldn't do it. I'm hoping that I don't need to buy another $30-40 worth of drill bits I probably won't use again.

 

Correct me if I'm wrong: I think the larger of the two holes needs to be large enough for the rivet gun to fit it's head through.

Running into this problem, too. I'm going to use my dad's drill press when I go visit him next week. The instructions I got with my kit from MC say it's a 1/8" hole for the rivet head on the "front" of the clip, and 1/2" on the "back" side.

To be honest, if you've got a buddy who's got a machine shop, it's a good way to do it. That's exactly what I did.

i scrapped the clips and used zip ties to make loops behind the TD and slide the belt through that. Worked much better and is actually more accurate. Those clips drove me nuts too. I think when i used them, i just used a cutting wheel on my dremel and cut a square hole through with that lol.

So you looped the ties around the hose where they would be concealed behind the box? Sounds like a solid alternative.

 

On the accuracy point though, is there anything that says we MUST use the clips for Pathfinder approval? I don't see mention of the clips on the Legion's CRL, just that the TD is attached to the belt.

Grrr! I finally got through those damn clips! At an armour party, we did our best with drill bits then a dremel made the hole large enough.

 

I thought I had finished my TD!
