MLC Helmet paint discoloration problem!

Recommended Posts

The MLC v3 helmet I bought Sept last year from Mardon Callanta after 1 year has developed a continous faded yellow discoloration line about a quarter inch wide all the way down the middle of the top and back of my helmet? Bummer! I ordered it/bought it painted because I wanted it done right and I did not want to worry about getting it painted. I thought the guy who made it would be the best.

I guess not. Im waiting to hear back from hMardon Callanta to see what he has to say. Anyone know him?

You could maybe use cutting compound or slighty less abrasive T Cut to see if the paint could be buffed back to white. If it is a CB? the filler/resin may be the cause and then it is fading from the basecoat. A complete respray would then need to be done.

This is a more direct version of what I was asking, in a roundabout way...

My brand new MLC has this. It's very faint but definitely there. I got it from MLC already painted but because of this line and a few little nicks here and there I'm considering painting another coat of white over the whole thing. I'm waiting however until my armor shows up so I can make sure the whites match.

Mine is also a new MLC v3 I ordered last September. I paid extra to have him paint it ironically becaus I wanted the paint done right and who better than the guy making it! I ordered it from mlcallanta@gmail.com.

Sounds like I'm not the first to have this issue with MLC

Strange how it wasn't there originally but has appeared overr the past 3 months and seems to be getting worse?

I have no idea how to fix it or how much it will cost to have it repainted. Don't know who cold even paint it properly for me.

I was just going to paint it myself. I figure one final coat of white would cover it up.

Did you contact Mardon Callanta and ask him about it? I sent him emails today. I'll see if or how he responds.

I haven't tried contacting him since I was just planning to paint another coat anyway. Please post or PM me with any response you get.

Are you guys going to paint them yourselves ?

If so can you tell me what brand and tripe of paint you are going to use?

Are you spray painting from a can or paint sprayer?

Are you going to put some type of clear coat as well?

Everything I have ever attempted to paint has been a disaster. That's why I didn't want to paint it my self.

Any painting tips would be appreciated.

Thanks

Here is the email reply I just received from Mardon MLC:

Hi Daniel,

That must be discoloration by the putty (bondo) in the joint area.

I just talked with my workers about it and they suggested using a 600 - 1000 grit sandpaper and sand the area where the discoloration is present.

The sandpaper will sand off the clear top coat. After that, paint the sanded area with basic white acrylic paint and when dry spray a clear top coat to protect your paint job & add shine to your helmet.

Try buffing it with novus polish no 3 or 2 to see if the stain could be removed. If it doesn't helps, its the underlying area that is the problem, thus wet sanding the top coat off and respraying the entire dome to a matching white would be a desired option. You can go to any automotive shop as they can mixed and match the white to the desired color and tone

Its kinda of strange as the helm would be prime before the base color is applied, thus bondo or putty area shouldn't be showing under the primed surface even if they suffer from discoloration, unless the helm wasn't primed and was immediately sprayed on with the base color

Thanks for the update. That's pretty much what I was planning on doing. Kinda lame that we paid extra and still have to paint though. Oh well...

I would definatly try "Novus" first, like recon said, it could work. If not, it definatly needs a repaint. Iam using "Moptip" automotive paints for most of my helmets. Great matching color!

Do these automotive paints come in cans or do I need to invest in a spray system?

I buy these in cans. Here in Europe its the best paint for helmets IMO.. however, i think Krylon is the best main spraypaint to get in the US.
