Rider inner thigh patch info needed

I finally received my desert bdu pants and going to start on the pockets and the riding patch. My question is there a template for the riding patch and photos of the patch sewn to the pants? also, what is everyone using for the patch, dark grey? grey? leather? suede? What does the CRL specify?

There is no template that I'm aware of. I just kinda winged it when I made mine, my wife's, my son's and Tunnel Rat's riding patch.

Make sure you make the thigh pouches, get them sewn on, and then dye the pants BEFORE you sew on the riding patch.

I used gray suede cloth for mine. Leather would be good too. Just don't use anything that you feel would be too thick of a material to work with. You'll want something flexible and comfortable.

 

The CRL says this:

 

SOFT PARTS

 

1. jacket and pants or jumpsuit with the correct (or as close as possible camo.) can be dyed DMP (british) desert camo. dye them brown and black to get them close.

a. leg pouches in the correct position and shape. KST specific.

b. grey riding patch on inner thighs.

(That's it.)

Hopefully that will help a little.

(And for those that point it out... I did fix the flaps on the pouches to have the angle on them. )

Thanks Matt! you are definitely a life saver, I comb thru photos and search forums posts and didn't see anything really concrete except whats in the CRL and a few pictures here and there. This definitely helps alot. Now, all I need is armor, boots, and pouches.

I just had the local leather worker sew in a 4 by 18 rider's patch. It's supposed to be a light suede/grey color.

 

I recommend dying your pants first before putting on the riders patch. Otherwise you will have to go back and use paint on the patch to get the color (speaking from experience).

Definately dye the fabric before you apply any riding patch. For my filthy patch, I went to Jo-ann Fabrics and purchased a small section of grey marine vinyl (it appears to be leather, its flexible, and you can sew it). I made a template based on one of the movie stills, cut it out, sewed and glued it on (that was a pain in the butt). I then added a little paint to the patch to tone down the surface and make it appear to be used. I also added a border around the patch (per the one movie still) to make it appar more authentic. Here is a pic of the first set of pants I made (non British BDU) :
