Silver Fox Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 Does anyone know if there are any specific requirements in regards to rivet size on the boot holster? Thanks for the help!
Guest spires75 Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 Wondering that same thing...1/8 or 3/16...the one that gets covered up probably doesn't matter but any advice there would be good too.
Witness Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 I use 1/8 myself. I'm trying to keep the hole in the boot between the shims as small as possible to prevent cracking out on the holster or the back support.
Grantd1* Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 I used 1/8" / 4mm as per MCs instructions.....however..... I cracked open a beer & off I went. When finished I sat back to admire a perfect job and the blood drained from my face as I realised the holster was on upside down Out comes the drill, which makes the holes wider due to the heat from the drilled rivet and enter the 5mm rivet!! While slightly off topic - these rivets need painting white right? However after a ROTJ sesh the other night, the bit where Leia is befriending Wicket by the collaped tree & she get's caught out by one of our finest.... her escape is helped by Wicket reaching under the tree and pulling said TB's boot thus taking his legs away from him. I'm pretty sure the boot close up revealed unpainted rivets
TB-3349 Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 My rivets are not painted. And not any other Biker's I have seen. So I'd say no, they don't. And no idea about the size of my rivets.
Witness Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 They do not need to be painted. You can have them either way. The only rivets that MUST be painted are those on a Studio Creations Belt holding the sections together.
Dart Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 Also, if you want to prevent enlarged holes from having to drill out rivets, just go really slowly and use a bit that's bigger than the rivet (little trick I learnt from Scott of KS).

So the 4 rivets that hold the 3 white plastic pieces together must be painted...I didn't know that. Does this mean the other 4 rivets on the belt (the two holding the 2" webbing to the plastic and the two holding the back buckles on that attach the drop boxes) are to remain silver?
Witness Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 So the 4 rivets that hold the 3 white plastic pieces together must be painted...I didn't know that. For Lancer yes. Does this mean the other 4 rivets on the belt (the two holding the 2" webbing to the plastic and the two holding the back buckles on that attach the drop boxes) are to remain silver? If you wish, some paint them white, others leave them silver. We do not judge those for Lancer.

Movie accurate is the belt has no rivets because it's a single piece, like MonCal's belt. We allow the SC belt if rivetted with white rivets or white painted rivets. We have to be a little lenient for some difference of manufacturing in the armor, otherwise nobody, even MonCal's armor would be Lancer approved. All other rivets are unpainted on the movie costume.

Awesome, thanks Witness!
chimei Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 Two questions about the rivets: 1) what brand rivet should I be looking for? Or will a generic silver jeans rivet be fine? 2) how do I "set" a rivet so far down in the boot? The rivet tools I've seen are too short to reach the base of the boot or even the sides for attaching the holster to the boot
chimei Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 the 1/8" rivet seem so small, smaller than they appear in the pics i've seen. would 5mm be acceptable for the belt?
Gigantor Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Someone told me to get 3/16 but do I need washers as well? First time riveting.
Chef Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 It's always best to use some form of backing when riveting ABS, otherwise the rivet head can end up pulling through the plastic, damaging it. A washer is best practice, but you can use a bit of scrap ABS at a push.
