RichArnold Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Hi all. Wanted to crack on with my boot build, but I have run into something that I figured I should ask about... I've got hold of some leatherette/ vinyl type stuff, but it's got a textured grain to it. Is this a good thing or should it be completely smooth, like the armour? I don't think it'll stretch out, but I might try the old "Iron under a towel" and see if that shifts it... Here it is at the moment: I'm thinking it's wrong, but has anyody else had any luck with this kinda thing? Cheers, Rich.

Dart Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 Heh, you're in the right section this time. Ideally, you'd want to get a vinyl that's much smoother than the one you seem to be using. However, if that's all you can get your hands on, then it'll probably be fine. You want to really stretch that toe bit. Don't rush it. Give it lots of heat and pin the crap outta it until you've got it so it's totally conforming to the boot but it's not so tight you can't slip your foot in the boot.

You know, the material I got has somewhat of a textured grain to it and I noticed, while trying to clean the excess glue off, that nail-polish remover would smoothen the texture a bit. No guarantees that it won't stick afterwards... Otherwise it looks like a sturdy kind of vinyl, you should keep working with it, see how it goes.
4505Marcel Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 A little grain is fine mate that stuf is border line getting heavy though, smooth just looks odd in my opinion. Id say you still have a lot of stretching to do on the toe area which will remove some more of the wrinkles and grain.

(what did everybody here say... oh yeah, research ) I've got several other projects I can use the really grainy stuff for, so I've just gone and got hold of some "proper" marine vinyl. Hopefully have some photo's soon. Certainly looks a lot better Quick question- is it easier to cut the soles with a blade or a dremel, or is it whatever suits? ta, Rich.

RichArnold Posted May 18, 2011 Author Posted May 18, 2011 Bog standard craft knife in the end. It's a bit scrappy, but it'll tidy up a bit (hopefully ) TBH this was only a first attempt, and I've learned a lot, so I'm now kinda itching to have another go...
