Boot Build Begins

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I am starting to wor on my Boots, while waiting for helmet and armor to come in. I am using the Merona boots from Target, and have bought the white marine vinyl. I am doing the rib cuts on the soles before I start covering the boots, and am looking for comments on how they are looking. Below is a link to a couple of pics showing the cutouts. Thanks.

Hey! Good plan to get started with the boots since they're not the easiest part of the costume by far. I haven't done any carving in my soles because I suck at using a knife. The rib cuts in the reference pics aren't really as deep as the ones you made but I guess you can go with your own style, adapting to your own boots and making them look good.

Keep it up!

They look just fine. Just make sure to give the cuts nice square corners and they'll look great.

Worked all day Saturday and Sunday on the boots, abd finished them late Sunday night. Here are some pics of the boots as I worked on them and the finished product. The tutorial is awesome and helped make the process go smoother than expected, I also learned a few things. Thanks for looking at these pics and I appreciate any comments that may help make the boots better. Thanks

looking at last picture you might consider a new flap to reach all the way to that seam that is showing...getting there, good job

if you went off the template online, they don;t always cover all the space needed which is why I go the paper template for that one piece

I had just noticed that as I was putting up the post. I agree with the paper templat as I did hace to adjust that didnt ralised it wasn't going to cover that small seam.

Thanks for the input

They look really cool :) The vinyl seems to stand up real nice too.

how thick was the vinyl?

i can only seem to get vinyl leather or leather?

i've spent days search for acceptable boots..almost everywhere sells the timberland ONLY boots and those are 180-240$

Finally found a pair last night..not a popular brand..but found 2 kinds..one with the metal button things for the shoe laces *i assume i can just take those off..or cover them nicely*

The vinyl wasn't real thick maybe 0.5 thickness. I got it at Joanns fabrics, ask for marine vinyl.

Have you looked online for "tan work boots"? Retail stores only sell the expensive kind because they know those shoes never fall out of trend and people easily believe they have to pay 200 bucks for them... I got mine online after spending an entire day in different shoe stores. Odds are you'll find what you're looking for without spending more than 40$.

Contact members of the Japanese Garrison and see who made their boots or where they got the materials. I'm absolutely sure some of them have canon boots. I have heard many people in Asia say they cannot get marine vinyl or duck cloth (cotton canvas), but there are members of those garrisons out there who have the materials and canon looking costumes. Just a matter of checking around some :)

It's always a good idea to contact your local garrison before you even start your build, the garrison can be a great source of spare materials, help in building and expertise you can rely on.

And Gator, your boots look great, but the top needs to be cleaned up. Perhaps find a friend with a sewing machine and machine sew the top so it is even. You may also want to try ironing the fold covered in a towel to get a cleaner edge.

Thanks Witness. I did try the iron and towel thing, just couldn't get the best crease in the top, and I need to learn to sew a straight line with the sewing machinelooking boot. Going to try and do another set up to see about getting a better, Thanks for the comments and the encouragement. I was at first a bit concerned about taking on this project, but feel withtaking a bit more time I shouldbe able to get a better boot. Thanks again

I tried to contact a few officers of the garrison, got one reply. *that was last year* There seem to be 2 biker scouts in it.

One of them being the XO, i sent mail to him today.
