TMC Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 So here is the start of my build thread....any help along the way would be MUCH appreciated... KS helmet arrived today so lets get started the kit as it came. I start with cutting and sanding with my favorite tool...The Dremel tool. My TK build was made VERY easy with the Dremel and a cutting wheel and sanding drum.
jabbasdead Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 I have two dremels, the cordless that goes in my travel bin and the corded that stays home...Hopefully getting a KS kit in March.
Chex Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 How was the pull on the helmet? Clean, or a little eh? Anyways, good luck, and make sure to replace the snout and hinge bolt covers.
TMC Posted January 10, 2011 Author Posted January 10, 2011 How was the pull on the helmet? Clean, or a little eh? Anyways, good luck, and make sure to replace the snout and hinge bolt covers. Pull was pretty good by my standards...clean not very much flash, no warps, and nice glossy finish. And yes who has the new snout and bolt covers. Thanks, TMC
TMC Posted January 10, 2011 Author Posted January 10, 2011 Cutting and sanding is done.....a little fit and finish and on to gluing. See anything I missed?
TMC Posted January 10, 2011 Author Posted January 10, 2011 BTW...I have a black flight suit, armor is on the way (studio creations) will order the soft parts soon. What about boots? I found a set of used Cabots for a good price...will they work for now or should I pass? Gloves and balaclava:
Chex Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Ugh, no caboots. Follow the tutorial and build your own. It's not that hard...either that or get Witness or Marcel to do you a set. Save you money in the long run and you'll have accurate boots. As for the balaclava, I would go with an under armor balaclava. Conforms to your head better...that one will most likely give you a turkey neck, not to mention possibly just adding heat to your dome and causing your lens to fog up more often cause your breath really can't escape with all the material. Trust me, UA is worth it. Helmet looks good, just take your time. The snout you can order from MLC. I would go with a hollow snout with the backer plate, and then drill out a hole in your face plate where the snout will go. Helps with airflow. The hinge bolt covers are 3M speed bolts...if I remembered right. We had a guy order a bunch for us on here back in the fall..forget who though, but they look so much better then the furniture gliders KS gives you.

Thanks for the advise...the balaclava is a leftover from snowmobiling so no loss, Ill pass on the boots and get some built. Ill ck out MLC for the snout and the 3M bolts. TMC
Chex Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Don't think MLC will give ya 3M bolts, you'll have to ask around or find them elsewhere. Just google them. And honestly, if you get a good deal on the caboots and don't want to make your own, or have them made, then go for it. Just know those boots won't get you Lancer if your aim is for that. Any more questions, ask away.
TMC Posted January 11, 2011 Author Posted January 11, 2011 OK...Its glued and screwed Gluing was the hard part, used weld-on and CA glue and got through. Button head SS cap screws for the visor (gotta love owning a hobby shop) and it works well. A little more fine sanding and fitting and move on to the face plate.
TMC Posted January 11, 2011 Author Posted January 11, 2011 ...and gluing the face plate to the visor. Quite easy to do, a little glue and lots of clamps.
TMC Posted January 11, 2011 Author Posted January 11, 2011 The screen vents and the pre-assembly...as you can see not a lot going on at the hobby shop today
TMC Posted January 12, 2011 Author Posted January 12, 2011 OK finished...at least as far as I can go. Snout on the way...bolt covers will prob make, after looking at the "real" thing seems to be gray vinal over a washer...Yes, no?
Andrew Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 if you have the mon cal snout coming, why did you put the KS decals on then? Take them off and paint the whole snout area black. Then put the snout piece on when you get it, assuming you got the full snout piece of course...

Witness Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 For bolt covers, I used two of those clear plastic disks they place between glass and wood on a desktop. They are the right size and I just sprayed em gray to match the snout, altho for realisms sake, if you can swing the 3m bolts, do it that way.

I foresee a helmet assembly business opportunity for you! lol
Chex Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 You don't have to paint the whole snout area black. Leave a the center unpainted where you will be gluing the snout on. Very nice job on the bucket.
TMC Posted January 13, 2011 Author Posted January 13, 2011 Thanks Guys....now the hard part...Waiting for the rest of the stuff to get here TMC
TMC Posted January 28, 2011 Author Posted January 28, 2011 Been awhile but the armor will be here on sat!! I have started on the flight suite and gloves.... removed the insides of the gloves....all zippers and tags are off the flight suit. TMC
TMC Posted January 30, 2011 Author Posted January 30, 2011 Well the Hobby Shop was busy so had to wait till Sunday to get started. After unpacking, which was packed very well, I spread it out on the work bench: BTW Helmet is not part of the SC armor just gives me an incentive to get finished..... The first thing I noticed is how well the cutting and trimming was out of the box. Jeff at SC dose a wonderful job at this doing most of the hard work for you. Not sure how other kits come but this one is wonderful as I am used to TK armor which has many more hours of cutting and trimming just to get started. Why does my bench turn into a mess when I get started TMC
