Cummerbund and Pouch Questions

Hi, I'm looking to get started sometime soon on my first costume, and this is going to be the first of many questions I'm going to be throwing out.

For the Cummerbund and Pouches, what are typically the best fabrics to use? I know the official line says "cotton fabric", but that could be a lot of things.

For the pouches, it almost seems like they should be somewhat ridged from looking at reference pics. Assuming that I'm right in that, is that something I would get from using a sturdier fabric, or would it be better to put some sort of hard liner in them to give it a nice square shape?

If you wanted a very realistic look, you can get yourself some duck cloth or soft canvas-type of material. Ideally, you use the same stuff for the 'bund and the pouches. Many people just use a heavier white cotton twill.

It's really up to you. As for the shape of the pouches, most of us put some sorta filler in them. Some prefer to completely fill out the pouches, making them look very square while others don't like to stuff them too much. I actually use my pouches to carry my crap when I'm trooping so I've got only a little bit of pipe insulation with some plastic elbows keeping the shape.

The screen used stuff, as far as i know, is cotton duck canvas. You can get it in a variety of weights and colors. So you should have no problem finding the right stuff. You can use a slightly heavier one for the pouches in an off white color . Use white for the cummerbund itself. Cotton duck is pretty sturdy and i think it will give you what your after.
