The Making of a New TB lid

Hmm... I might have to double-check my supplier to see if they've changed over. What's the part number for the newer ones?

Hi Andry, it is all the same part number, I checked with the company I got the new ones off and he assured me they were the same but updated. They are black, same thread, same length , same square back, same circumference, same plastic nuts but ever so slightly convex with a less than smoothe finish surface. I hope he was telling tales. I am going to try the other supplier this week. Please check it out for me either way, thanks. Could the grey bolts become collectable :( :(

i did a comparison to the original side by side (i accidentally closed photoshop before saving...DOE!) but the only difference i see, is towards the end of the "snout" if the "cheeks" were sucked in just a little more, and the top line of the visor a tad bit straighter, and the visor possibly being a tad bigger......you got this thing nailed bro! Even if you dont make these changes, still the best bucket ive seen, and will likely want 2. (my finace is doing a scout now) Excellent work my friend

Thanks Lou, yes these parts are a bit off ,the moulds have been adjusted since this lid was vacformed, the new lid , which is in the pics, has the visor position changed, again, and the whole face plate has been reduced very slightly. I will get the moulds tidied up and hope to be able to get a few kits pulled to sell.

Well, I think you might be right about the "collectable" part. My supplier no longer has the old style. They're waiting for the new batch to come in and they figure they'll be the black ones. :o

Hang on to your helmets for a while longer  I hope to get a few vacformed once I finalise the molds, mainly cutlines to be hopefully added for a bit more ease of build. If I sell a kit I will try to make a decent instruction sheet, it is a difficult build, I have built up four now and every one has differences! Thanks everyone for the kind and constructive help and thanks to BikerScout.Net for the great reference pictures, and Jez at Star Wars Helmets. Yes it isn't perfect and yes unfortunately it isn't a direct casting from an original helmet but it is where I am stopping for a while, JD.

Used the comparison picture posted earlier. Did a line tracing of the original visor area and put it over onto your sculpt to sorta illustrate the point I'm having about the lens shape. The illustration is not perfect as there are several camera lens and angle issues between the two pictures used, but it still gives an idea of the more straighter upper curve on the lens area. If that gets worked in better on yours, then it will definitely improve the final look.

And yes, we all dream of a cast off screen used or original prop, but this is damn close.

Yes I see this very clearly, here is the excuse  , this is not the lid I used to copy when I was cutting out the eye area, I used the Star Wars in Concert lid which has a distinct higher middle cut along the top edge. Yes the angles are different, the camera etc etc but yes it looks a bit too curved, I will try to get some better pics up when I get a complete sticker set and try to match up a few pictures from various angles, in the hope it gets closer  . This lid is no. three, no. Four is better put together and the visor is a bit further out as well but it still has this eye shape :( I will get around to this improvement when time allows, thanks.

Ah cool tracing, yea pretty much what i had mentioned as well. But seriously, the lower curves by the ...nose i guess you'd call it, are almost dead on of the lense! I think some skillful trimming can get it closer to the screen used one. None the less, "fixed" or not, this is till the best darn fan made scout helmet ive seen! i think we can safely say that LW's bucket will become the one people are after for hign end scout buckets!

I was going to try and rework my MLC3 when i got it....but was too anxious to get my TB designation back. I may only troop that sucker once before i sell it to get one of these!

I think for any TB fan this helmet would be good to be in anyone's

collection.

Yep their may be some very minor tweaks to be done but your

not going to get it 100% accurate TB helmet unless you recast a

screen used one. And the chances of that happening is going to be

like winning the lottery.

Overall it's going to be another good helmet option out their in the

prop world, better than nothing i say.

Well, regardless of how the visor area was cut on the two originals, then the brow ridges would have been identical on all helmets. Straighter across - the two lines I drew above the visor area. So even if you are attempting to replicate the look of another screen used helmet, that detail should be changed to make it more accurate and then people can always decide for themselves which style they want to trim the visor area.

Can't wait to see more.

Yes Carlsten, I agree, the eye area has been tricky, I now have two steps in the mould, the actual problems are trying to get the vacformed piece to look the same as the original, some of the nice curves at the eyes are the way the plastic curls over the mould.Thanks.
