The Making of a New TB lid

Well with the recent pictures of an Original TB lid kicking around a very good friend of mine has decided to do his own take and aim to achive as close to the Orignal as possiable so here are the pics so far guys, hope you enjoy

First of all - cool that someone is doing a take on this!!! If you just knew hoe long I'm looking for people who

try to do it right once and for all.

 

So far I think it looks good but still I have some gripes - I hope you don't mind.

Photographs can be misleading but I think while it is completely the right thing to make the forehead

larger than any other replica out there the way visor and dome correspond to each other seems to be wrong.

In the side and front view both parts together result in a too low profile of the dome from the front if you ask me.

 

Facemask details could be a tad sharper.

 

Also the lower sides of the mask with nose and the neck should be extended downwards a bit , too.

The front surface of the arch of the nose should be a tad thinner. So I'd take away a bit form the inside.

It is not necessary to implement a gap in the embedding of the snout because you will install seperated base plates

or the MC base anyways to look more original.

 

Is it possible to show it next to a DP bucket to have a better size comparison?

I'm not sure if the helmets you chose for size reference are the new or old south american ones so I just want to

be sure if - and if - how much bigger it is cpompared to a DP.

 

Thanks for doing this and I'd be interested if the project is final or some alterations are considered and if some

buckets might be available in the future

Hi Phillip,thanks for the comments, this is my first complete version, I have made so many pulls only to discover more flaws, the three lids on show are , far left is the heavily modified CB mess, middle my version and far right is my modified KS lid, the KS is very similar in size to my DP lid so I used this for size comparison.There are issues and I know you have a great eye for detail, but the way I have the molds done means that I can change widths and heights as I build, I think this is why there are different looking lids in the movie.The line on the nose was an air pull cut as I couldn't get the vac to suck in to the deep nose section sufficiently.The nose length is actually a bit bigger so that the jaw line would angle, I think I can improve this by fixing the face plate at a different angle next time.Yes the dome needs to be a wee bit more above thje visor , this is because the visor was first joined together with a thick piece of abs which pushed the whole visor a bit high, I hope to improve on this later.The front nose surface I think is ok, once the black is painted around the inner half on the face it will look correct. I initially hoped to sell some kits but this has taken all weekend to get from sheet plastic to now, with folks complaining about the KS bucket being difficult, I think this build is way beyond many. Just let me say one thing - besides all critiques and all the hardships that may follow your path...

please keep going - I think you're on the right track.

Nice work! I don't have quite the same eye as Philipp does but aside from the visor being a bit too arched, I think it looks great. Looking forward to more pics of your progress towards an even better bucket!

Thanks for the photoshopping Boro, looks like my eyes are a bit big, I have been using this lid, S Sansweets old lid, and the Star Wars in Concert lid , for reference pics, I think the SW in C lid has bigger eyes, when I saw it in Dublin I was pretty shocked at the overall size and beefiness in general of it. The way I have the eye mould I can reduce or enlarge as I wish, I will maybe do a Stunt version with massive eyes for a wee change.

Looking at the last picture I'd try to get the visor edges on the same levels.

 

 

Of course I know it's not directly from the front so things might seem a bit more critical than they are.

 

A lot of stuff seems to be worked out, the helmet's shapes look a lot crispier in the details - Top!

Just... WOW! That is really taking shape nicely! I've been staring at the screen-used bucket photos we have in the gallery and then looking back at your new pull and I have to say that it's looking like the real deal.

Thanks for the lovely comments guys, nice lining up Phil, yes it is looking better, the eyes will be cut slightly less but the mould isnt too bad , may take a bit off the faceplate mould. The visor can go up or down depending where I glue it. I plan to reduce the visor around the back and slope it upwards to the front, Pretty pleased with the jaw line now. Just the nose to paint tomorrow and fit the snout detail and plate,I bought the MC, although brilliantly accurate is a tad small in length so it is an easy job of making a backplate. I think the nose will look great with room to paint a decent line halfway round the flat nose section, pics to follow, thanks for any advice guys.

Yeah, I was wondering about the MC snout piece. How much shorter is it?

Pushed up tight to the top dome and tight on the face plate, it is about three millimeters from the bottom flush.

Great work on the helmet. It is about time somebody should come up with an accurate helmet.

 

MC snout was molded to fit MLC helmet. We can definitely make a new mold to fit your helmet.

Hey Lonewolf what thickness do you use to pull the helmet?

I think at the nose and the folds underneath the viewport as well as some other spots it could use some more sharpness.

Maybe a thinner material or a stronger vac table might do the trick as I think the moulds are not the problem judging from

the pictures.

 

Once thing is set in stone - if you do plan to produce some more I want at least one

Hi Phil, the thickness was 3mm , I was thinking that I would need a bit of strength in it as it was needing to be joined all along the centre line. When I tested the molds on 1.5mm it was a very crisp result although I am still pleased with this depth and sharpness on this lid, it is a good bit deeper and sharper than my KS. Glad you are enjoying the build.

I agree - it shouldn't be too thin also regarding the original two halves technique; how about 2-2,5 mm -

I think that is close to MC's material. Of course only - if available.

Regarding the dome and visr problem you have had I want to repost these photographs which might help.

The Scout dome is much taller than existing replicas.

 

Maybe there is a need to elevate the dome of your sculpt a bit, I couldn't tell form the supplied photos.
