Wickedfluxx
A couple of other questions... After doing some reading on the forum, I'm not entirely sure what's acceptable for Lancer status in regards to lens color. Will a green shade 4 safety visor work? What works best for inner helmet mounting? I've read that the 3M Speedglas 9000 headband doesn't entirely fit, but that the mounting hardware is key for screen accuracy. Any take on what works best for a MLC v3 helmet? Thanks, -Kenyon-
Dart
I think you just need a dark colour. There's nothing specific mentioned about what colour is correct (or incorrect). As for the bucket mounting, it really all depends on how much space you have inside. In my KS, I can't fit a headband so I've got a few bits of foam instead. While I can't speak for the scouts who've become Lancers, I doubt that the headband makes a difference. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Cyber Scout
Well the the darker the better i use the shade 4 as a personal preff, and i have had no props with cam flashies or it looking green in any way even in bright sunlight, The inside of my "trooping" helmet is sprayed black wich also helps. most welding lenses are 1mm thick so once hot glued in to place it is very flat to the face plate and should not obstruct anything else inside the lid Some hat liners will go in some wont, it is possible to get a speedglass in a K.S.(ask my best pay Lonewolf) but mine is padded with memory foam
Guest carves
For the lense, I use the material from face shield found at Ace Hardware. Cut it for size. Use glue gun to hold the lense to the helmet, I then applied windows tint (dark 80%).
Wickedfluxx
Shade #4 looks good and I never considered using memory foam as an option. Tinting my own lens is another interesting option as you can customize it yourself. Thanks for the ideas folks, keep them coming!
BlackDOG
I used a green #3 welding shield that I cut into lens shape and hot glues into my bucket. It is sorta tricky getting the curve right but in the end it worked fine. I have never had an issue with seeing anything or people seeing my eyes. The inside of my bucket being dark helps. I used the army helmet pads that are removable and washable. They were expensive, but way more comfortable than the helmet liner I first tried to rig up. There are multiple pads that can be placed wherever you think they feel best. It works well for me. Speedglas bolts I used DID NOTwork with my MLC.....bolts were too short. I had to modify them (taking the speedglas bolt head and attaching it to a longer bolt. I have not had any issue with that setup. J.
Wickedfluxx
Where did you order the army helmet pads from?
BlackDOG
US Cavalry..... here: Team Wendy ZAP pads
Arch27
What size pads did you order? I notice that with all these ACH pad upgrades it ranges from 1/2" to 1". Team Wendy ZAP pads seem to be among the cheapest (at least among reputable companies). I've seen ACH pads for as low as $20 a set, but not from anywhere I feel comfortable sending my personal info. Wickedfluxx
Good question, I too would be interested in what size worked best.
Wickedfluxx
Ordered the 1/2", I think the 1" would be too much. Also, the shade 4 visor came in and after painting the inside of my MLC helmet black I think it's going to work just fine. Thanks for the help all! BlackDOG
Yeah Kenyon freaked out when I told him I had the 1" pads..... The size worked for me. I cannot recommend the Zap pads enough...they are great.
Shazbott1540
There are several sets of sealed army ach pads on the bay. some buy it nows at 20-30 bucks. I have used these personally in the army, and they are great. At least in comparison to the old school liners. I would highly recommend them, removable, customizable for each persons noggin (velcro holds these in place) , washable, and moreover comfortable. my 2 cents
Arch27
I'll have to get a couple sets and fit these into my KS as well as the MLCv3 I'm finishing off. The old school hardhat suspension digs into the back of my head really bad at about hour 3 of a troop. The last one I did I felt that pain for about 12 hours after. Thanks on the feedback! I've been debating ACH pads for quite a while now and this helps!
BlackDOG
I would also add that when I installed these, they hold my bucket steady. It does not wobble around on me and I dont have to worry about the chin cup. I will take a pic when I get home......
Wickedfluxx
That would be great, thanks J!
Chex
I was told that for Lancer status you had to have dark lenses, not green. Hmm...if that's not the case then I might have to switch them out on the KS when it comes in. You don't have to have the chin strap for Lancer do you? Wickedfluxx
I thought dark, but not green as well. However, I can say that the shade 4 green that I just got is completely dark when I painted the inside of my helmet black. Without the black paint to help darken the lens my eyes would definitely be visible and so would the green.
Wickedfluxx
J, you were right on the 1" pads...I actually went with a mix of 1/2" and 1" ZAP pads in mine to fit just right .
BlackDOG
Sorry I lost the handle on this thread.... I took a pic of my bucket and forgot to post it. Here it is: my lens is #3 welders face shield, cut and glued in place.....
