VadersBlade
Hello all, I was planning on applying for Lancer status waaaay back in February, but saw that everything was locked down due to the election and then the new policy being debated upon. I saw one of the new changes was cutting vertical ribs in the boots. Is there a tutorial, or any kind of high res images as to what these should look like? I saw the couple of images of the brown boots in the gallery, but that was all I could find. Anyone have this on their boots that can share the pictures? Thanks! Witness
What we're looking for is something like one of the photos below. The vertical cuts of the first picture are acceptable, you do not need to go as far as the cuts in the second picture.

Acrylikhan
What tool would you recommend using when cutting the vertical ribs?
Witness
I used a box cutter on the vertical ribs of my original boots. On my new designed boots on the bottom, I use a #11 xacto blade.
Acrylikhan
That's cool. Okay...next question.... about how many ribs should be cut in, and how deep? I think the rib count was 14, using the screen caps? I can't find the thread that it was discussed on. (P.S. @Witness: What brand of boot do YOU use for your Lancer?) Witness
(P.S. @Witness: What brand of boot do YOU use for your Lancer?) I use the spacing of the existing cuts in the soles to space out my cuts. One at the existing cut, and one in between, all the way around. Short of getting the right boot base or fabricating them myself, I am never going to get 100% accurate, so I have to do with what I have. I use the Merona Ryker boots from Target. The boots are very comfortable and the sole is soft enough to cut into easily. My original boots I used for Lancer were similar to the ones I showed a few posts above with the vertical only cuts. They were from WalMart. I am working on a new set for myself with the Merona boots once I finish all the commisions I have in a few weeks. Acrylikhan
Okay, cool. I was wondering about how many ribs... the FAQ didn't specify if there had to be a specific number. I'll use your photos here for reference when I ruin... I mean,... cut mine in. (rustles through tools box, sharpens the x-acto, readies the Dremel. )
BlackDOG
Frank, I used the boot reference pic and marked everything before I cut....Basically, I was trying to duplicate the screen caps from the gallery. I wanted to try to duplicate the wide, narrow bit just forward of the midsole.....The rest I followed the lug pattern on my boots. They are target boots, but no the Merona Dave uses....they were the 19.00 boots discussed about a year ago. This pic was before I re-did the tops of my boots. Jello
Awfully glad I did some puttering around before I asked a question which had already been asked. I was just wondering about the mods to the boot sole for Lancer status. Glad to see it's just the heel that's required to be cut out, rather than the whole boot, although we could do the whole sole should we so desire, right? Now to find an xacto and get cutting; I feel like a 'sole' man already!
Witness
The only requirement is the heal. If you choose to do the entire sole that is your call. Because of differing boots, soles and materials, it's very difficult to force people to make the exact design, I have cut myself too many times trying to add more detail than I have above. Chex
I did 1 pair of boots, and when I was done, I was DONE lol. I don't know how Dave churns them out the way he does..man it was murder on my fingers.

I don't know how Dave churns them out the way he does..man it was murder on my fingers. Gosh, that makes me look forward to this step. Thanks! lol... All kidding aside, I'll do the heels, since that's a hard and fast requirement for Lancer, and then decide whether to do the rest of the sole or not. Although I'm thinking at the moment I'll just stop at the heel, but we'll see.
Chex
lol that's just me. I found the use of a square ended xacto blade very helpful.
Jello
I finished my boots yesterday, and I have to say, I think they came out pretty decent. Is it just me or was it just a wee bit nerve wracking first time cutting the sole, knowing that if you screw up, you can't take it back? lol
Ursus
Great. Is this what I have to look forward to: sliced and diced fingers? Would they even notice the cuts in the soles if they were mirrored to each boot? I guess you would have to have made the cuts before you glued the vinyl onto the boots, that they would notice. Any suggestions on sole cutting paterns or templates? Should the cuts be evenly spaced or should there be specific measurements between the cuts? Jello
I used a scoring blade (#16) and a chisel blade (#17) for my xacto. I printed a pic of the screen used boots and then using the existing tread pattern, masked off and drew the pattern onto the sole of the boots. The scoring blade comes in handy for the vertical and horizontal lines, while the chisel was used to actually "scoop" the majority of the stuff removed from the sole to reproduce the pattern of the screen used boots. This is the result:
Ursus
Very Nicky done. Which boot did you use as a base? I might give it a go if it'll help save me some coin on this project.
Jello
The boot is a hiking boot from Payless Shoe Source of all places. Rugged Outback is the name on the sole of the boot.
Guest Aeruk
I'm carving out my boot soles this week. Any tips on getting the inside of the cuts smooth? Mine are looking rather chewed up so far.
Jello
The chisel blade for the xacto helped me with that. Although I confess I still see some places that need to be cleaned up just a smidge. Anyone else have any suggestions?
chimei
you can see my pics on another post, but i found that making the "scoop" cut with the chisel blade first, followed by the "length" cuts gave me a sharper squared line. i started on the inside part of the heal - so any initial trial & error would be less obvious. the Ryker boots are super easy to cut...at least in my opinion
