Has anyone tried this?

Recommended Posts

I was trying to come up with a strong simple and screen accurate method of attaching the chest and back plates at the shoulder. I liked one member's recent build thread that showed the pieces joined with 1 1/2 inch (I think) white elastic secured to the underside of of each with a single rivet. I'm a big fan of the rivets, but I guess most folks would still want to cover the gap with white cloth or something similar.

What if you simplified it and just sewed a tube of white elastic cloth that would cover the gap and then rivet it to the underside of each plate through the bottom of the elastic tube. I plan on doing this, but I wanted to get some feedback before I start drilling extra holes into my armor. Thanks

Haven't tried what you're saying, but the only issue I can see is how well the elastic cloth will hold up over time. The system I use is a bit of black nylon webbing with 2 snaps on it, 2 snaps on the adjoining shoulder area and it's all covered up with a tube of twill/duck cloth that's stitched to the strap.

This way, I can take it all apart and store it much more compactly. If you decide to rivet it all together, you'd better make sure you use some washers to help things stay together.

My only concern with rivets in that area is that they would be visible. The cloth cover only covers about 1/2 inch or less on each side. The snap, attached to a plastic backing strip, glued to the underside of the armor method has served me well.
