Ok, I'm looking for opinions.

Here is my fabric with the two different types of webbing laid down to simulate how it would look on the cumberbund. With and without flash. I'm torn, on one hand I feel it's still too green but then again in the pics it looks very close when compared to some of the reference material. As stated already I have always thought that a grey/green or olive is the more likely colour to have been used even though in some shots it looks a sandy beige and also a mid grey??

This cumberbund is probably the most difficult part to get right with the camo coming close behind!

Anyway, the pics:

Obviously there's dirt and weathering to add but which looks best? What would improve it? I know the Poly Webbing is dark but the texture is a closer match.

Feedback as always is appreciated. :)

Skip, I think it looks Awesome! From the texture to the dying...grey/green...green/grey their will always be a difference in color. But overall you are nailing this one down! Keep posting the progress. I like the Olive webbing.

Thanks Angelo. :) I really appreciate the feedback you give mate. :)

Obviously there'll always be differences in this costume from one guy to another, especially now with still limited references, conflicting references and doing the best with what we know(or think we know). I just wanna try and solve the puzzle of the cumberbund.

With so much progress being made on the paint, gloves and armor, I think this is the last major area where we still have trouble?

So lastnight I spent the evening with my boots and some clay. I needed to make me some toe caps. Originally I was gonna get some from MrB, but then decided on this route as it's mean they'd fit my boot better.

I sculpted the basic shape of the toe cap on top of each boot, but the idea is I can lay down some fibreglass on top of the clay. Once set I'll have my toe caps, they'll need some extra work like smoothing out with Bondo and some clean up but in theory it'll work just fine? Hopefully? :D

Anyway here's what I got so far.

Not quite done yet but close.

Ok, got one toe cap fibreglassed. It's fussy work but it is working. :)

I worked in small stages to try and avoid rushing when the resin starts to cure. I added three layers of FG tissue. It's thinner and lighter but should do the trick I think. Don't forget I still need to clean it up and give it a coat/layer or two of rondo. Then do the other one.

Thanks Tom. :) I'm pretty much following your build thread to see me through this part mate. For the clay sculpt anyway.

Yeah, I've not built my shins yet. Should have really but I'll do that over the next week and see where we stand. I'll update this post in a bit for new pics.

One layer of filler. Will need some spot filling but you get the idea now I think?

BTW, Tom is your inbox full?

Hey Skip,

Boots look great! Well done! I need to upgrade my boots, now. I can't get as lucky as Tom. Do you still have that link to the Wood World boots? The arches are brilliant. Keep us updated.

Thanks Matt,

I got them off Ebay close to a year ago now mate I think? I haven't got a link and couldn't post it on the board anyway could I? I just looked for something with a deep enough tread/sole so that I could cut into it to make it look more like the Pit Crew boot.

Though a friend of mine was lucky enough to get a pair of Kenneth Cole Reaction shoes for $40 shipped to the UK not long ago! :o

Been doing a few different jobs today, but the most progress was made on the helmet. It's all trimmed now and mostly all cleaned up. Just a few small areas to sort out.

I've got the visor cut out, vents on the sides cut out along with the little one on the nose.

The other visor(this could get confusing) has been cleaned up to get a better fit with the lid too. I still need to cut the "sunroof" out though.

Overall it's all looking much better now. Next up is cutting the face off! :o I can't slip this over my head in one piece so it has to be done!

Hopefully my filler will arrive tomorrow so I can finish up the toe caps too. I really wanna get this one ready for trooping in September!

Today I planned to seperate the face from the rest of the helmet. I'd really hoped to avoid doing this but there was little choice.

I got me some No15 X-Acto blades. These are like tiny little saw blades. Trouble is I couldn't find my handle! LMAO! :D

Impatience got the better of me and I proceeded to remove the face anyway. My right index finger is raw and sore but the face is off now. :)

DSC01274.jpg

I did a surprisingly neat job of it too. :o The beauty of this lid, much like a Biker Scout, is that the seam will be hidden by the visor for the most part so it'll look like the helmet is still one piece. Hopefully!

Next up was cutting out the sunroof on the visor. That was fairly simple and straightforward really.

DSC01275.jpg

That's most of the prep on the helmet complete now. Time to fit magnets, and a little sanding before painting.

I made my cod and got that fibreglassed this morning. Nothing spectacular just now, and you can see I went back to using pepakura for it. A coat of rondo, some sanding and it'll be good to go. Not heavy either.

DSC01277.jpg

Finally, I patched up the cracks on my armor. It must have took a few knocks while in transit at some point but it's all repaired now. Just some sanding there and job's a good un! :D

Hey skip nice work going there, looking at the cumberbund the last pic to look the ticket so im going to need to pick your brains about this and do you have a pattern worked out for making it up?

Cheers mate. :)

I haven't created my pattern yet but there is a kinda pattern on here somewhere. It was a while back but it had plans of each pouch/box for the 'bund too.

Also mate, a good UK colour match for the base is Crown paint, in their "Period" range. The colour's called Croquet.

Ok!

What a day! :)

First up was spot filling the toe caps and armor. The armor needed filling and sanding after repairing the few cracks I'd found earlier in the build.

DSC01285.jpg

DSC01286.jpg

I'm pretty pleased with my toe caps. I'd definitely do something like that again.

That done it was time to was the armor off to get rid of the dust and allow to dry naturally(wiping never gets rid of all the water). Then it was onto some primer! I went with a black primer so that I had a darker base for the chrome.

DSC01287.jpg

You'll notice surface imperfections and scratches? These are deliberately left as is. It'll give it depth, texture and a more authentic weathered look.

Anyway, I left that for a while and got to work on covering my cod. I found something that matched pretty well and cut it out and simply hot glued it from the back. DON'T tell my wife though! The fabric actually came from a jumper she got me last year that I only wore once! She'd kick my *** if she ever realised. Ssshh! ;)

DSC01290.jpg

This will get painted in a camo to match the armor later on.

So I took a wee time out to play with the kids, allowing the black to dry. I wasn't going to do this tonight but couldn't resist! I started painting some of the armor chrome!

DSC01288.jpg

DSC01293.jpg

Shiny! :D

Again you'll see the imperfections in the surface. Some of these spots will get masked off with masking fluid when I lay down a coat of grey primer before moving onto the primary base colour. I have to thank Heatshock(Nate) for helping me a LOT with selecting a base colour for this. I know Tom has put a lot of time in and recommended a colour but I was still in two minds. I must have looked at thousands of paints from a dozen or so manufactures only to end up with what he(Nate) recommended in the first place(it's the UK match to Toms sample). I look forward to receiving it mate, cheers. ;)

That's where I am with the armor now. Biceps, elbow/forearms, helmet and backplate all still need painting but they're not ready yet.

Another job almost done is the earth magnets in the helmet to close and secure the face plate. I cut little channels into the inside of the lid so that the magnets could sit in and have as much surface contact as possible to keep them secure. Similar concept really to my Neyo lid.

DSC01295.jpg

Still got the last two magnets to install but you get the idea.

Well, that's about it for todays progress I think? Feedback and comments are always welcome. :)

Wet play here today so didn't get much done. :( Still, I had some indoor play with the kids and got a little done on this.

I'd been debating whether or not to add the vents to the back of my lid for a while now. The helmet kit came with vinyl decals to simulate these vents but I wasn't entirely happy in using them as there'd be no depth.

So an hour ago I made up my mind to cut them out and back them with mesh(fabric speaker mesh).

I used the decals as paint masks first of all. I lined them up as best I could then used some primer to mark out where they need to be cut.

DSC01300.jpg

Then got to work with the dremmel to make the rough holes.

DSC01302.jpg

Then simply used my hobby files to square them up and neaten the lines.

DSC01303.jpg

In all it took maybe 45 minutes and a mod I'm well happy with! Plus it'll give some extra ventilation on those warmer days.

Some other smaller jobs got done too but nothing to show really. :)

Thanks very much mate. :) I'm hoping to have the visor attached to the face tomorrow and even get some primer down on it. We'll see though, nothing goes to plan! LOL!
