You know what Xdarkangeldownx you blasted me in a PM just now for no reason Bro,

I didn't post the pic or comment on your costume at all seen above -

You need to direct your anger at the persons who posted it - not me Bro - not cool at all.

This thread is my helmet tutorial thread, please don't flame it for me, thanks.

Your misguided pm to me was sent to the management of this board to set the record straight.

Talk to snub999 He's your man not me - I also removed his "quote" from my response - HIS QUOTE - Also notice the "wink" icon as well to get the feeling of my post.

so long

BTW BARC armor is completely different than biker scout armor, how you got something negative out of that is beyond me...

Yeah i know the scout armor is dif. This was made i think fall of '05 and at that time the only pics that were out that were decently clear were the BARC speeder figure set. I think i'm going to ask my friend at ILM if i can get more photos of the BARC for us to check out (one's that are a lot clearer than those that are out there).

BTW, with the white BARC that is pictured in the Clone Trooper issue of Insider, there are those triangular cuts that come out from the goggles that end just above the cheek bone, i noticed that they're not that prominent on your helmet as they def. arent with mine. did you try to replicate that when making your helmet? cause i had a hard time trying to figure out the cut. just wondering

The concept of the barc in the inseder is a bit misleading. So far most references we really can use are the promotional renders and the screenshots.

In all of these either the texture disguises any of these details shown in the illustration or they're simply not included in the mesh.

Generally illustrations are not a good reference to start with - espcially as it is the only reference to these geometrical shapes in the mask.

For 501st standards we need the 3 identical references and so far the illustration is an unicum. Even the strapping of the armor loooks more like stadard clone strapping than the rougher type the screenshots indicate.

Same applies for the vents above the goggles - actually the Barc on screen seems to have not enough space there to have such a detail there.

Mike had to alter the helmet ot host a human head as the CGI partially neglects the anatomy of a real life being.

The source of the illustration is also unclear. Is it an official concept drawing of the in-house art department of ILM or is it just a depiction of another freelance illustrator working ofr the insider or what not.

I agree that not all details of the barc helmet are correctly reprsentated in Mike's helmet beginning with the too edgy dome but you have to take into account that this is a first generation helmet and the references are rare as you pointed out yourself.

For a first throw this helmet is really an achievment I think. Even though I know I will alter mine I really admire Mike for this talent and pioneer spririt.

Please speak with your contact - it would really help to get good references. I'd be quite interested in a textureless render such as the Galactic Marine render we got from Hyperspace Snapshot.

Though that one was quite small in resolution and the most important thing - a good glance on the backpack wasn't granted... :s

Looking forward to any input you can get from that source.

Tom,

Thanks for the PM, it was appreciated and understood.

Thankyou ! :D

The triangular areas you speak of are not seen on the final BARC versions as seen in the movie so I left them out. This is something however that can be added if someone wanted to customize their own helmet into the "white" BARC version. I encourage anyone to make alterations ,just like Mad had posted above about the sharp edged dome on my helmet.

Together as a community we will nail it sooner than later and I personally would like to see you and everyone involved with any input on all parts of the costume.

Alterations for good or bad is what personalizes your artwork :)

Just like Mad pointed out, I did have to alter the dome slightly for the helmet to fit a human head. If you look at the CG images and stills it's like BARC troopers don't appear to have foreheads LOL :D

I discovered it's a very delicate balance to try and capture all the "signature" elements when sculpting a CG helmet or the armor for that matter, based on the pics we have at this time.

I'll look into getting those shots asap. I understand that CG can be a pain in the cod piece being that i'm a computer animator and we all have rendering issues when it comes to high-poly models. In fact, i believe that ILM has most of their characters molded in clay and are scaned in using a model scanner (at my school we have a head scanner that is the same thing only bigger). so if i can get either my contact in the art dept. or the animation dept. to sneak me some stills i'll try to get them posted. Most likely i would have to PM people with them as to avoid getting us in trouble with LucasFilm and i definately don't want my friend to get in trouble. I'll keep people posted.

With the helmet made to fit the head was a problem even for me. I molded the face as best i could a couple of times so it would fit better, cost me a lot in clay and in plastic.

I also plan on in the future setting up something where if people can send me pics of highly screen accurate costumes (the parts mainly) i would like to build them in 3D and set up some sort of database where people can look up the parts and view them from different angles and people can control which angle they look at. It'll be a lot of work but i think it can really help those who are making armor. Again, i'll see what i can do.

Any chance someone can fix the links in the tutorial? Most of the links are coming back 404...

Hey Dave,

Everything is popping up for me. Where are you having the problem?

I'm having trouble with basically all links in Section 3.0 and 3.5. The links in Section 1 and 2 work fine.

Am I the lucky exception? It seems like some pictures in the bikerscout.net galleries are missing.

nother pm sent.

I just started ... kinda.

I washed everything real good with some soapy(Dawn detergent) water. then sanded over everything (180 grit paper). got some parts pretty smooth but not all parts satisfactory yet. then washed it again and set it aside.

Now I went out and bought a DREMEL Tool because I didn't already own one. And made sure I got the bits you stated in Post #1. I'm kinda illiterate about this and was wondering if you could specificly tell me which bits to use for which purposes. For instance, the rough edges around the bottom. and visor piece. Do you do anything to the inside of the helmet or the underneath inside visor piece?

UPDATE on Mid Green Wash

Goto Iron wind metals web site (miniatures website for war games)

They took over Citadel paints and inks - you can buy buckets from them directly via the phone or email -

I got like 10 containers the other day. Their website shows only ink kits, but if you call, you can get single pots of it. :)

I told them a few others may be calling and she promised to hook you up.
