Ubermensch's Scout Trooper (ROTJ) build

Recommended Posts

I submitted this build for approval a few days ago, but the more I look at it, the more I see that I can improve. Some things for accuracy, others for quality of life. Ultimately, I'm aiming for lancer, so I've tried to build to that spec as much as possible.

All hard pieces were 3D printed. Bucket STL from ChrisThePropGuy on Etsy. Decent design, but there were holes in the model that I had to manually repair to get it working. Switched to MrPoopie's STLs for the rest of the prints.

Decals from TrooperbayShop on etsy.

Gloves from Wampa Wear. I'm seriously impressed with these.

Coveralls are Red Kap Twill from Amazon.

All other soft bits were made by me.

I'm not happy with the shape of the codpiece now that I'm pouring over the pictures. Hopefully good enough for level 1, but I do plan on at least raising the stitched arc higher, if not outright redoing the whole thing. Seems like maybe it's just sitting too low which then also causes some bunching in the crotch. I have a long torso, compared to leg length, so that has made some things interesting.

When I added the patches to the coveralls I took it in a bunch, but looking at the pictures from behind maybe I need to take it in more. Maybe adding stirrups to the legs will pull the material into the boot more and it won't be so bad.

I also plan on borrowing some tips from the following post to keep some bits in place. The knee pads in particular won't stay in place. I also need to add some padding to the knee pads as they are really hitting my knee caps. Curious what others have done in that regard.

I've added some upholstery foam to my bucket to keep it from sliding around, which works decently, but it can be improved upon. Might look at adding the chin strap to help. Also curious how others are attaching the lens to the bucket. I tried hot glue previously, but it didn't want to stick to the lens much, so using gaffer tape right now.

  • You are correct that the codpiece will need to be redone, I'd say even for basic clearance. As you mentioned, the arc needs to be higher and the general shape needs some refining.
  • Note in the photo below how the sides curve on the edges, vs being more straight. Also you might need to add some foam or batting to the interior of the cod.

  • I would recommend putting in stirrups before taking the pant legs in more. Less work on your part.
  • Most people do use hot glue to affix the lens to the face plate. The hot glue is not used as an adhesive between the face plate and the lens, if that's what you did before. Just put down a layer of hot glue over the edge of the lens and onto the face plate, usually along the left and right sides. Once the glue dries it holds the lens in place.

For your helmet, that padding will take a beating with sweat after time. It’s easy enough to replace down the line, but if you want something a bit more durable and customizable consider picking up some tactical padding.

If you’re looking for a pattern for the Cod, I worked mine off of the Lancer WIP that we recommend for people to read. I think I have a pdf uploaded of the pattern in my WIP. You will likely need to extend the length of the top if you have a long torso, but it will give you a starting point to work from.

Let us know if you have any questions.

I have the tactical padding, which I have on the top, but it's just not thick enough for the sides so the helmet slides around on my head too much. I might try adding some dense EVA foam as stand-offs between the bucket and tactical padding.

Can you point me to that Lancer WIP? I haven't come across it in all of my reading. It's not pinned anywhere that I've seen at least.

Here you go:

And here’s the link to my WIP with the cod template as a pdf.  It’s in a March 27, 2020 post on page 2.

Brilliant, thanks!

Just realized I attached my current codepiece just over an inch below intended. Raising it helped loads, but as mentioned the shape isn't quite right. Plus, I think I skimped on the polyfill. Back to the sewing machine I go.

Maybe I wasn't liberal enough with the hot glue, or I was using crappy glue sticks. Will try it again. Thanks!

Just making sure that you are on the same page with what Chopper is indicating about placement of the lens.

Not the best photo, but it’s what I have readily available.

Place the lens against the opening and use the hot glue to anchor it in place. You’ll see in the photo that it’s only used on the right and left edges of the lens. Mine also has a dab on the upper and lower bridge portion too. You’re not using it has an adhesive like CA cement or E6000. Your using the hot glue to tack it in place.

There will be a gap between the lens and faceplate in the untacked portion, which is normal and actually preferred. It will help with venting heat and help prevent fogging.

I was doing it the same way as you, just didn't use nearly as much. I was also concerned about there being a gap, so this is awesome. Thanks!

I created a new codpiece that should have a much better shape while working for my dimensions. I also took the opportunity to add stirrups to the legs to wrangle the folds.

The cummerbund needs a good ironing. I also just noticed the tags on the gloves sticking out, so I'll fix that too.

Looks fantastic! Great job on reshaping the cod. For the gloves, I have my TB number written on the wampa tag, but they do squirrel their way out, to I tacked them in place with a couple of quick hand stitches to the lining.

All comments so far have pretty much focused on the codpiece, so I’m taking that as a good sign that the rest is looking ok, or at least good enough for level 1. I’m open to any additional feedback or suggestions that you all might have. Can’t wait to troop with you all.

You should be good to submit with your last round of photos.

Congrats.  It wasn't that difficult to review your costume and approve you.

Your self-awareness of how your costume fairs is a testament to your attitude towards costuming excellence.

Your openness to feedback is highly commendable.

Enjoy trooping, and on to becoming a Lancer!

Ricky
