The knee armor is complete! Yet another item to check off the list.

Next target: The Torso Armor! (and maybe the boot holster too :D )

I was getting reference photos of myself this weekend to start cyphering the torso armor. I'm starting getting an idea of where the shoulder bells are, and see how everything should look. I also wanted to make sure that I will have overlap on the cummerbund too.

I did find a few problems that need to be fixed:

1. I need a balacava that has better coverage for a longer neck. I didn't realize how much of a giraffe I have until I saw the photos. My wife was helping me out but still there's skin showing.

2. The collar has to be extended up to compensate for my neck, and a velcro sealing flap need to be installed. I will have to figure something to hide the zipper too. Giraffe neck syndrome. Any ideas to help out on this would be appreciated!!

3. I need to put elastic straps on the cuffs of the wrists to keep the sleeves from crawling out from my gloves.

4. Elastic straps on the pant cuffs wouldn't hurt either. They too tend to crawl out of my boots.

5. I have to remove some of the exterior pockets. I wanted to keep them some of them to keep my wallet and keys on my person, but the ones that show will be removed. The chest pockets I'm keeping because they will be hidden.

6. The waist area of the flightsuit is a little too baggy. Either I will have it sewn in, or add more velcro so that the straps can tuck more material inward. My vest/cummerbund will hide this, so I have two options either way. I had to buy an XXL flightsuit, so I could sit, and talk in a normal voice. Now, I have to compensate for all the extra fabric. :angry:

7. Hmmm... some padding in the knee armor would add to the comfort level! Sorta cuts into the shin area. Ouch!

8. My armor pieces will need velcro anchoring onto the flightsuit. They kept sliding down while we were taking pictures. I am worried about the bicep armor sliding down off of the vest/cummerbund sleeve. I think once the chest armor is completed, and I get the t-strap system in place to attach the shoulders and the biceps together, it should work out.

I got the belt with the off-the-hip boxes hung and strapped in. Looks great!! Oh, yeah, the helmet worked out GREAT! I may need to put some anti-fog/shaving cream on the interior of the lens. great air circulation, and I could hear out of it extremely well. I'm still cyphering the audio hookups. I may have the speaker mounted into the chest after all. It's pretty close in there.

So without further hesitation:

Thanks darthnova!! Although I would like your opinion on my vest. Are the vest sleeves too long?

Hey Frank yes they are a little long but your shoulder bells are to small for you too.

The bicep armor pieces kept sliding down, as was the forearm armor.... so I think I need to get the chest armor completed and then fine tune everything.

I have the problem of the biceps falling as well. I wrap them and put the biceps over the cuff of the vest. Then I added a snap to hold the bicep to the vest. That puppy dosent go anywhere. My shoulder armor is the same way, snap to the strap on the chest, and then to the vest. I dont do jumping jacks or anything.

The arm plates are more like lower elbow gaurds. I might ride mine a little high.

I also agree on the shoulders, adding a little to them would look better. The gap will look less with your biceps up. Just add a little to the bells...

great job bud. Not many build there own. I am totaly impressed!

All of my armor pices have industrial strength Velcro hook & loop attached. The plastic part that grabs is the sticky, glue backed kind on my armor and the fuzzy part (sew in kind) is on my flight suit at the points where I want my armor to sit. It also stays right where it belongs. I always put the fuzzy part on the washable parts of costumes so that it doesn't grab everything else in the wash. With the plastic loop part on the armor it doesn't grab anything but the place where it goes on the soft parts. You may also want to reinforce the glue on the back of the sticky part with GOOP@ since it does not break down with heat. The other glues like hot glue and fabric glue tends to breakdown in extreme heat and humidity. A trial we Floridians have to contend with nearly year round.

Your work is amazing.

Guess we have a new scout recruit soon ;).

Frank - awesome progress. A little whinming though :D

You asked for the length of the vest sleeves - I think they're too long but

this may also derive from the fact that the shoulder bells seem to be still

too small compared to your size. So either you tweak the sleeves or you

tweak bell and sleeves to meet half-way with both.

As for the knee peaces - very nice shape - I like the crisp detail of the

gaps between the "protective segments".

But I would have added edges pointing more inward at the bottom to give

it a more solid look as seen on your very nice detail at the top lips.

The latter came out very nice.

I still have a gripe on the X shape of the whole body but then again those

details are probably a matter of point of views as we have seen the

warping of the plastic due to the straps.

All in all - very nice scout from scratch!

Thanks guys! I still need to get the chest armor started and finished. I'll hold off until that's completed before doing any revisions on other pieces.

But since we're discussing it.... :lol:

Here's the buck I made with a casting on it... I can only add about an inch or so length... and not really too much I can add to the sides for depth. ... maybe 1/2-inch at most. I'm at my maximum for width. :lol:

The dimensions of the buck are Length 9.25" x Width 7.125" x 3.125" depth. These are pretty big already. I think the padding on the vest is making them look a little small, too. To account for padding, I might need to add an inch to each dimension. Darn my genetics! We'll cross that road soon enough. :D

Mad: :lol: :lol: ... well, I had to be me! :) Thanks!!!

  • 1 month later...

Been a bit busy lately, so I'm getting back on track. I've been devoting a lot of my time to the Phobos Project, which has a direct relationship to this project as depicted by the following algebraic expression:

P = (TB)x

Which, logically, could make the following expressions also true:

P = (TK)x

P = (TD)x

P = (TI)x

P = (TS)x

P = (IG)x

P = (TC)x

We'll explore those equations in later chapters in this course.

We received some new urethane foam at work, and I've been commissioned to see how good it will stand up to the rigors of vacuforming. Now... what to do? Since I've got the Holdout pistol, I think it is high time that I give the boot holster a try.

Stay tuned...

no,not really. i bought a set of coveralls that were white and i dyed them black but all the thread is still white. so i went and bought a pair of black pants and a long sleeve shirt that i think will work. do i have to have a flight suit to be an offical member?
