Fist fighting trees and teddy bears: A Scout Story

Safetymanual

Recommended Posts

MolCal armor showed up yesterday! I get to learn how to assemble all this now. I don't think I'll need to trim anything but I'll bring it up and get advice before I do anything. I also welcome any advice. My helmet is still being made as well as my EC-17 blaster. Ordered my boots this morning. Soft pieces will be ordered after the wife and I get a couple of things paid off, so probably next month. I'll get my gloves sometime eventually.

I was most worried about the chest and back piece but since I'm short and stocky both fit like a glove. Based on the CRL picture having the other parts a little bit big on my doesn't seem like a problem. I don't think it will be bad at all for my body size...or lack thereof. One of the guys in the garrison reassured me that the scout is a very forgiving setup. I'm looking forward to joining the Pathfinders soon.

Looks like it's already trimmed, though once you start trying it on you may find it needs some adjustments.

The guy in your Garrison was right.  Because everything is held by straps and elastic, the armor is very forgiving.  Getting the soft parts right is where this kit really shines!

Yeah it's trimmed up nice, just didn't know if I will have to make anything smaller. I opted for the pretrimmed set since I don't have the tools\skillset\confidence to do it myself. I'll get there eventually. Since I like to hang around the forums before doing anything I think I got a decent vendor list. Chrisx909x is making my boots. I'm going to be reaching out to KriptonTop for the soft parts.

Chrisx909x made my boots and some of my soft goods.  I got my original vest from KriptonTop -- both guys produce quality goods!

About the most you'll have to do for trimming is the shoulder strap. If it's anything like my oooooooold MonCal armour, you may need to trim them a bit. Easy enough to do but make sure you've got all your soft goods so you can test with them on. Just use some masking tape to temporarily secure the front and back shoulder straps and see how things sit on you.

Good luck and have fun!

Hi Rusty! You can start working on various parts of the armor like your forearms, biceps, belt, etc. I believe what @Aradun is talking about are the bridge straps where your back and chest armor meet over your shoulders. You'll want to have your softgoods, vest & flightsuit, on before you do any trimming there to ensure a good fit. The rest you can certainly work on. The only other part that you might want to wait on a final fitting are the shoulder bells. Those will need to be trimmed based on where your vest sleeves fall.

I believe Retrofire was referring to Dart’s post above.  You’ve got solid advice from everyone thus far so you’re in good hands.  Hit the team up with any questions you have as you start working on things.  We’re here to help!

That's correct Dennis. Hahahaha I'm a dork! Got you and Dart mixed up there. Aradun is right though Rusty we're here for you so don't hesitate to reach out should you need anything.

Update time.

Boots\cummerbund\pouches\cod have been ordered. Helmet and blaster came in.

Helmet seems to need a little work. Looking for feedback before I start trying to work on this. Bought this from Chris the Prop Guy. Got this on his Etsy page at the same time he was doing a run on the forums here.

Either the snout greeblie and visor bolts didn't get installed or customs screwed with it. There are some light damage so I think customs had a hand in it.

Front visor: https://imgur.com/NRccSM8

  • I'm assuming in here will need to be white. Might be able to not do anything due to weathering.

Left side: https://imgur.com/8qJRERC

Left ear: https://imgur.com/Xx7cvFU

  • This is nowhere near as smooth or neat as it could be. The sanding tool on my Dremel should fix this.

Left side with bolt: https://imgur.com/BhTkb0u

  • Not sure if the visor bolt is big enough. I taped it on for the pic.
  • I'm also concerned about the top gap of the visor. Looks like it's off.

Back: https://imgur.com/yoFNTjU

  • Under my pinky is some physical damage. Not too worried since it's on the bottom underside.

Right side: https://imgur.com/VBntL6A

Inside: https://imgur.com/jGSQYmT

  • The visor is held on with some foam. Some hot glue in spots should fix this. That way I can have it more secure than what it is.

Thanks for the photos.

Some questions for you -- are you planning on basic clearance? Lancer/Level 2? Were you planning on spray weathering your kit?

Your second photo of the "Front visor" has a bad link, so I'm not sure what area you're referring to as needing to be white?

The size of the bolt recess on the sides of the visor is a bit concerning to me. That's decently wider than the standard 22mm 3M bolt.

What top gap are you concerned about on the visor? The original helmets had a gap as well.

The other items you've pointed out should be fixable with a bit of work.

That's for telling me about the link. It's fixed now.

I'm going for basic. Maybe one day I'll go for Lancer.

I'm unsure of my weathering at the moment, I just know it's going to get done.

The gap I was talking about is the area to the right of where the visor bolt is. The spot where the visor and helmet meet.

Okay, yes, that portion inside the visor in the photo also needs to be white.

I think that the gap you've marked is fine.

I'm made some progress on my attempt to fix the helm.

I got some better visor bolts and installed them. How are the ear holes looking? Passable?

One side of the visor piece isn't quite flush. Is that going to be a problem?

I've also started priming the greeblies for my armor.

I checked out the photo links. Did the masking tape pull the paint right off the helmet?

The right side lower gap looks like an assembly alignment issue. I don't think there's any more adjusting you can do on your end that'll alter that.

The real helmets had gaps near the base of the helmet anyhow, so I believe you'll be okay for basic.

Unfortunately yes, the painters tape just pulled the paint right off.

I think I'm at a point that I can start correcting the paint and then mount the visor back on.

Helm is coming along. Learning a lot fixing the problems on it. I'm going to start sanding the current paint job off so I can prime and repaint. I've ordered new decals.

I believe I've finished painting the greeblies for the varying parts. They need to be flat black correct?

Now that the weather has warmed up and isn't dropping to freezing or below I can work outside. I've finished sanding down by helmet and it's almost ready for painting. I found that I have a few cracks. Can I get recommendations on how to fix these? I am concerned about the jacked up ear hole. I'm thinking that I should just cut the broken and cracked section off.

Urgh. What you're seeing is likely stress cracks from the faceplate getting forced to bend to the shape of the jowls of the bucket.

You can try using a small drill bit and drilling a hole at the end of the crack and then filling the crack with putty. You can also try gluing some abs as a reinforcement on the interior.  That won't keep it from cracking again, but it might keep the crack from continuing further.

Holy moly! It's been a while since I've updated.

I have everything either ordered or on hand now. Only waiting on my flight suit, vest and boots. I still have to assemble the armor. New bucket from @Darth Voorhees from 7CS came in and it's fantastic! He also provided my cummerbund, pouches and cod piece. Shameless plug for this hardworking trooper.

Lovely pic of my being all excited. Can't you see it in my face?

I watched the armor video that @BikerScout007 made. Made a huge difference in my confidence to put this together. It was like an armor for dummies video.

That being said, I did some strapping while I get a sewing machine. I'm not a big guy and I'm thinking the arm armor might be a bit big. Do I need to trim down everything or should I be able to get by with shrinking the shoulder bell?

I would hold off on trimming anything until you get your soft goods sorted. Also, tightening the elastic a bit will help them seem less loose on your body.

Did a little bit of assembly this evening. First time riveting for me!

I suck at wrapping the cummerbund by myself. Feels like I'm pulling my shoulder out of joint doing it. Back of the belt is crooked. My daughter did her best attaching it to me.
