Starting my first build - ROTJ Scout

Recommended Posts

I have wanted to join the 501st for years and I am finally starting the process.  This is my first build and I started with the helmet.  I found an RS Propmaster Red Label helmet on ebay and it fits really well.  I was going to go with the RS Propmaster self build kit for the armor and the Imperial Boots Biker Set for the soft parts.

For the helmet, when I lean forward, it starts to open up.  Before I start trial and error with solutions, I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and what they found was the best way to secure it.

If anyone sees any hurdles with my overall build plan I am more than open to ideas/advice.  You all know way more than me and I want to learn.

Great choice! I also built my own RS kit.

Some people put magnets in the bucket to keep the visor closed. I think @AradunFF just did it?

Some people have used magnets. Others just get those small velcro circles from the hardware store, which will work as well.

Nope. I tried it, but the mags were too thick. So I went with Velcro, and because RS faceplates have a tendency to be just a bit askew I only used it on one side. Just took some white Velcro that I had on hand for my build, cut it to size, and attached with e6000.

Just ordered my self build kit from RS.  Next step is to take some personal measurements and put in an order from Imperial Boots.... One step closer!  :)

Welcome!

The magnet trick works with my bucket but it's probably because it's RS's normal helmet without any interior padding/lining. If I remember correctly the Red Labels come it, which could just be too thick and heavy for the mags to be ineffective?

The Red Label bucket is fiberglass which is why it is lined on the inside. It’s heavier and a tad thicker than the ABS version. If you’re going to try magnets under the lining make sure you get rare earth mags with at least an 18 lb pull value.

My self build kit from RS Prop Masters came the same day as my soft good from Imperial Boots! So much good stuff to do on the weekends! ... and so many videos to watch :)

One step closer!

For the vest, the one that I received from IB seems to have a slight shine to the sleeves.  Is there a way to make that matte like the CRL? Or should I send it back for a different material?

There have been quite a few people approved in the Imperial Boots vest. I don't see it being a major issue for basic clearance. As to sending it back, Imperial Boots is not a custom costume shop, so my guess is that they won't re-make it for you from a different material.

You can check with your GML to see if they'll accept it, but my take is that a slight sheen like that will be ok.

Yep, like Chooper said, check with your GML if you’re worried, but if you do, send your GML a photo of you wearing the vest with your armor on (at least with chest, back, and shoulder bells). The difference in sheen may look glaring to you when looking at the vest by itself, but keep in mind that very little of the flak vest is exposed when wearing your armor, so it’s not likely that you’ll notice the difference between the sheen of the sleeves and the body of the vest with your armor on.

I am fitting the tank and need some advice.  It is getting really close, but I am at the point that the more I adjust it the more is seems to knock other stuff out of alignment.  Do I keep at it or is it at the correct level of fit that they usually get to?

On a different note, the above images keep getting smaller because each response that I send has a smaller and smaller attachment limit.  This one had a max of 92 kb.  Is there something that I am missing on the best way to upload multiple images?

Thanks.

Peter, the way your tank is sitting looks fine. The only area I see that needs attention is the top cut. It looks like there's a curve? That cut should be straight across where I've marked in green.

If I go straight across there will be a bit of a gap between the tank and the back.  I curved it to meet the contour of the upper section.  Is it better to go straight across and have the gap?  I don't think that I can slide it down any on the back armor.

A gap is okay. The tank rattled all over the place on the ROTJ scouts.

Here's what it looked like on one of the screen used armor sets in the Magic of the Myth exhibition:

Also if your tank is like mine, it may not be perfectly flat either. See if flattening it out helps too maybe?

I plan on sewing my cod piece to the bottom of the vest and routing the strap up and hooking it to the back of the vest. I looked through the soft goods forums and found lots of possibilities but nothing conclusive as the best way.

What is the best way to hook the strap to the back of the vest? (Buckle, velcro direct to the vest, sewing another strap to the vest and velcroing the straps together, some other option, etc.)
