Helmet 3D Sculpt WIP

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've been posting my progress on the RPF but was recently approached by ImperialWalker and asked if I'd come share with you guys.

This model is actually the first one I've attempted solely within the Sculpt environment of Fusion 360 (minus the snout greebs, which I know needs altering.. It's an old model I threw on to get a feel for the whole look).

For the most part, I've been working on what I call the Faceplate, so I know there's lots to alter on the rest of the helmet. But for the most part, I'm happy with how it's looking. :)

I'm keen to get everyone's input on this so don't hesitate to comment!

Anyway.. Enough text, thanks for checking it out and here's the latest renders!...

Hey Brett,

Nice work so far. The first two things that stand out to me are the rotator bolts, which should be flat, with a slight indent in the center.

And the aerator mesh on the snount piece shouldn't have holes in it. That part was actually just a sink nozzle with mesh screen material, so while there was a screen pattern on the cast surface, there weren't any holes. See references below.

I noticed that you haven't sculpted the back portion yet, but we're happy to take a look at that whenever you're ready.

Since you're using the starwarshelmets website references, have you looked through the helmet photos here yet? http://www.501stpathfinders.com/scoutopedia.php

@Retrofire @BikerScout007 @Dart -- anything on your end?

Thanks bud! Appreciate the input.

The bolts are just placeholders so far. They will be exactly how you've shown when I get there! :)

And regarding the aerator, that again is just a placeholder 😬😅

I should have posted a list with all the things I'm aware needs altering when I posted this thread.. But as usual, I'm rushing around messaging/posting while I'm at work.. haha!

Again, thanks for input 😁

Edit: Thanks for the link! I'll be sure to check it out 😄

The snout piece is just going to be a separate bit right?

If you could do the same with the bolts that would be great.   Maybe leave some rectangle shaped holes so people can use actual 3M bolts in there would be rad.

Oh yeah for sure! It's all separate.

Main helmet, Peak, Faceplate, Snout Greeb, bolt covers and eventually the chin cup and a visor buck for those that want to Vac-form a visor for a perfect fit.

Once I've gotten the whole helmet to a decent point, I'll search for bolt dimensions, whip them up and make sure everything fits nice so nothing will need to be modified post print!

Apologies if my terminology for parts is wrong. It's just what I've come to name them myself 😅

@MrPoopie has 3d sculpted some 3M bolts already.  Maybe y'all can get together on that and make sure they fit this bucket!

Hey, Welcome!

I think this is coming along great. Now that you're here though, I hope you don't mind some rigorous critiques. You are my only hope for a close as possible to screen accurate Scout trooper helmet. :D I also have some ideas how this can be made to 3D print easier and for some quality of life suggestions as well.

As mentioned @MrPoopie modelled up some 3M bolts, but in case you wanted to handle all the sculpting yourself, here are some reference photos.

Note:

Tiny Hole is 1.62mm
Dip in centre is roughly 0.74 deep

It has a seam line that goes across the face and back, but I'm not sure if they consider that with adding around here.

Also, a quick list of what you still feel you need work on would help as we can then wait on those before nitpicking stuff you still haven't completed.  I think for my initial thoughts, I would assure that you use the reference photos with the measurements (linked above / stickies post in helmet section). I think it is important to eliminate camera distortion as much as possible as many of the reference photos could look different than they actually are.

I think that is one of the issues I've seen with other 3D helmets. The creators take images and try to match the sculpt, but it ends up in them looking too long/short in places.

For example, here is your helmet superimposed on top of the Star Wars Helmets image. While they're at a slightly different angle, you can see how much wider the reference photos look. This could be lens distortion from their photo, or render distortion from the camera your software is set to emulate. If the sculpt is based off genuine measurements, then we at least know those are right and we can work forward under the assumption that any distortion is camera related. If you get my meaning.

Looks good so far. The only think my eye picks up (and it may just be me or the perspective of it), is the depth of your visor from the side. When compared to the screen-used, it looks a little bit deeper/wider on the side. Otherwise, I think it's coming along nicely. Well done.

The lens used to take the photos of the screen used helmet will definitely affect the overall looks of the piece, so i would like to suggest that anyone that has an RS biker scout post here measurements as precise as possible of the many areas of the helmet, that way he can correct any detail that is missing the screen accuracy goal, for example the upper front edge seems a bit too sharp, im not an expert in biker scouts, so please take my critic as such
