Helmet Ventilation / Fans for the scout bucket

Given I have plenty of time whilst I save up for the armour etc iven beeb absorbing all the amazing info here so thanks all!

 

Now as a gentlemen of , lets say , a fuller figure im anticipating a wee bit of sweat so was looking a troopacoola fans and the reviews are good and hes a fellow Mancunian so all good.

 

Was thinking of getting a single variable speed and having it pull cooler air from one of the open ear slots and vent and the visor.

 

My question is this :   Does this sound like a sensible idea and also would there be enough room?

I have never used fans for the Scout helmet and I don't know many folks who do.  That helmet was constructed with ventilation in mind and the ear holes do a great job of keeping air circulating through the bucket.  Plus if you need a breath you can always pop up the face plate for a quick second.

If I’ve got room for a Ukswrath audio system to be mounted in my dome, you should have ample room for fans. That being said, the helmet does provide decent ventilation as Mickey noted.

It’s much more open at the bottom than a TK bucket, the open ear holes provide decent air flow especially on a breezy day, and there’s even a little opening for air flow at the bridge of the nose where the lens doesn’t come flush against the eye opening. Before laying money out for a fan, I’d try trooping a couple of times in your kit to see how comfortable you are. You can always add it down the road if you need it, but why lay out cold hard cash if you’re okay without it.

I get the point , its just hard not to go stir crazy whilst I save up and was just curious to see the thoughts of those that have done it for a while.  After all you guys have done this and I haven't yet and in worse , especially warmer , weather than I'll ever have to deal with

Not to derail the subject of this thread Matt, but have you considered any audio options for your build?  That would be a solid investment down the line, and there are many ways to do it at various price points too.  I can tell you from experience that both kids and adults think it is super cool when they hear you talk, especially when they’re not expecting it.  Remember they can’t see your face so there’s no facial cues.  They don’t see you smile, and they can’t read your eyes.  All they see is the helmet turn towards them and boom!  The Voice!  So cool! 

Speaking of not being able to see your face.  It’s amazing how often I can get people to retake a picture because I tell them I blinked or forgot to smile 🤣🤣🤣.

 I hadn’t  to be honest as I always assumed they’d be really expensive but having read your post it’s certainly worth looking into , have to admit the photo trick made me spit my coffee in my keyboard 😂😂

One of the best parts of the scout is that you have such great ability to hear the things around you and Interact with kids better, I had fans in my first scout but once you add them by the ear vents then it makes it hard to hear. I don’t have any fans in my new kit and I honestly haven’t had to. I have the UKSwrath audio system in my helmet which doesn’t allow much space for anything else, but to be honest, you don’t need the fans unless you are trooping mid summer and at that point there is nothing that will stop you from sweating bullets. Hope this helps

You can even get a decent speaker and headset for abt $35.

It all depends on how much work you want to do to “blend” the audio into your set up and how much cash you want to invest. I know some scouts in my garrison that have a decent but cost effective speaker in their pouch, but then invest in a blue tooth headset so they don’t have to run any wires.

Like I said, lots of audio options are available at different price points, which will help you stay on budget and you can always upgrade later.

I went with UKwrath fans. Put one directly in the snout blowing up into the lens and one on the top of the bucket blowing across my brow. I have zero issues with fogging up and it’s a fantastic breeze in my bucket.
