Cummerbund Question

Recommended Posts

Question from a long-time lurker..

I purchased my armor kits and soft goods about 2 years ago and haven’t gotten started until now. My question is, my cummerbund is pretty tight over top of the flak vest and racing suit. It’s not so tight that I can’t move, but it sure won’t be sliding down. The problem is that it makes the shoulders/collar area of my vest bunch a little bit. Is that normal? Will that be hidden once the shoulder bells are on?

Additionally, how tight should the bund be? I’m wondering if I’ll need to replace it with one just a little larger.

Hey, we're more than happy to give you feedback and guidance, but it'd really help if you could show us some photos. Otherwise we're just speculating.

Thank you for your reply! Of course, I’ll take some pics and post them after work of exactly what I mean. I appreciate your help!

Ok here are a few shots. You can see the collar of the vest is flared up a little bit because of wrapped tightness of the bund. With the chest piece on its less noticeable so might be obscured completely with shoulder bells on. The last photo is from the back where you hopefully can see how tight it’s wrapped.

Hey Robert, thanks for posting those photos for us. I'm trying to figure if your flak vest is too big or your bund is too small. Maybe a bit of both.

You said that your bund is tight, but you can still move. Can you tell me more about how the flak vest fits on you? Does it feel like it fits large? The edges of the flak vest collar also extend outside of the shoulder bridges, which tells me that it's a bit large.

Let me know and we'll go from there.

Thank you for for that, Chopper. The vest is not particularly baggy, but it does feel like there’s a little room to move if you know what I mean. The body of the vest does not stretch around the flight suit and fit closely. The collar though is cut very wide as you can see, and It’s so wide in fact that it’s difficult to hang it on a hanger without it falling off. Comparing it to other vest photos I can clearly see now that isn’t correct. I’m starting to think it’s the best that’s adding the additional bulk.

Let me ask this -- are you able to close the back seam of the flak vest maybe an inch or so tighter to see how it feels? Does that help anything at all? Just wondering if you'll be able to do some tailoring to the vest closure to help make it fit better overall.

sorry can I chime in, the vest does look a little big more so at the back, you can see the gathering.

You can also  see this when its hanging up, its quite wide. I would pin it to where you can move your arms down comfortably, so its not that tight and see how much it might be need to be taken in, also each person is built different even some darts but I'm getting ahead of myself here. Once you've gauged how much you may need to take in then look at the options.

I do have my cummberbun very tight...and I've put on weight though having it tight isn't such a bad thing, I've also got a trick if you put on weight but again I'm jumping ahead lets get you approved first.

Just reading your post, depending how handy you are with a sewing machine, what about your jump suit is that quite baggy as well? that can push things out

Thank you so much for your reply. The vest definitely can be taken in. Just by overlapping the back panels I can see there is room to pull it in but it doesn’t do anything to change the size of the neck opening; there’s just not a way to bring the collar father up my collar bone that I can see.

The suit is not overly baggy I don’t think; I have room to move without tearing stitching but it’s not baggy.

When I take a closer look,( another day can show a clearer mind) that neck line is way too wide regardless, it wouldn't matter if you're bun was loose or not, I think the issue is the vest its self

See how you go by bringing in the back.

If that doesn't work I do suggest maybe Velcro to pull your vest down and attached to the overalls.

Though if your game, redo the vest keep the sleeves, thats the hardest part and just use the old vest a guide line.

Dont forget photos very keen to see how you go

Thank you so much for the great advice, I apologize for the delay in getting back to you. I’m going to look at some of the vest tutorials and see if I can try my hand at attaching those sleeves to a t-shirt. I’m not a seamstress/tailor in the least so I’m not sure if I want to attempt it myself lol.

Oh I'm not either, all self taught.

The pattern is there you just need to improve on it. You got this.
