WIP wannabe Lancer by OnkelPaschulke

Consider these learning experiences vs. mistakes - soon you will be an expert in ABS. I learned a ton building my TK, and even more building my TB (like sewing!).

Damn, that's unfortunate, Arne.

If it makes you feel any better, I did something similar a long time ago, when I was trying for my initial approval. I was shaping one of my shoulder bells and just ended up melting the thing with the heat gun.

I did the same on a WTF kid scout helmet.  The snout greeblie didn’t fit as the sides of the faceplate recess were sloped weird so I hit it with the heat gun, pressed in the greeblie and….turned it into a pug dog. I was able to re sculpt it eventually but it was very disheartening at the time.

Thanks for the encouraging words! Started to fix the mess today. Glued some 1,5mm white ABS to the ear and roughly bent it into shape. After the glue dried I will add some ABS paste and some filler and sand it to shape afterwards. It will work out in the end!

Alright, I’m quarantined at the moment due to a covid infection and feeling much better now. Had some time to fill and to sand and to fill and to sand… I’ll take some pictures later this day. The rescue mission went fairly good so far. Got everything ready for spray filler for all those small scratches. After that I‘ll fix the mayor scratches and hit the helmet with a white primer. For Lancer I‘ll switch to RS helmet but for basic it should be fine.

Another short question. I was thinking about dying some parts to get them off-white. I know it’s just black tea and letting the parts sit there for a while. There was a nice tutorial around here but I couldn’t find it. Any quick tips on this topic?

Well. some high quality pictures of the helmet... 😄 It is not 100% restored but I think it'll work for basic approvel. I couldn't restore the left lid of the helmet but it is covered by the face and the strip for the chin cup. I didn't take a picture of the whole mess because I was in rage mode on that day but basically I cut the ABS which was burned by the heat gun. I roughly marked the position of the opening, took a seprated part of 1mm ABS and bent it to position and glued it in place. I put some ABS behind the lids to support After that it was all about putting ABS sludge and putty and sanding and repeating.

Today I'm planing some finishing touches. Got myself some ABS polish to buff the armor parts and than seal the whole result with some semi-gloss varnish. I want to weather the whole armor tomorrow because the weather is supposed to be better than. To be quarantined has it's advantages... 😄

Arne, given how bad the damage was, you did an amazing job on repairing that bucket! Mad skills brother! The end result looks great.

Quick picture of the weathered armor. I need to fix the snout piece because the masking tape took of some of the grey color…

Some final touches left on the helmet and the strapping and than I‘m good to go for a suit up and approval pictures!

Ok, finished the last sewing job yesterday. On Saturday it's time for approval pics. I will post them here first to get some qualified opininos! 😁

Alright, did a quick dress up yesterday. Unfortunately some mistakes or dressing issues appeared after I watched the pictures on the pc. Most of them were blurry. Seems like my camera lens is broken because it didn't get the focus right. Luckily I have to do the pictures again because of the little mistakes... 😁

img_2174o3j3h.jpg img_217772jvn.jpg img_2178r3jlo.jpg img_2183hhk2h.jpg

1. different distances of the dropboxes
2. collar isn't closed propperly
3. turning the biceps and forearm armor more to the front
4. velcro is looking out under the biceps armor
5. need to close the face more because the black of the chinstrap is showing
6. the cummerbound is laying on the TD
7. adjust the buckles on the belt
8. maybe shorten the buttflap a little bit more
9. maybe getting back and front armor a little bit more together

These are the things I noticed at first sight. I guess it won't be a big deal for basic nevertheless but they need to be adressed. I will add some weathering to the bound and the cod, too. The off white isn't really noticeable. I guess it's because of the lightning.

Looking at your photos, I don't think you should have any issues with basic clearance. Everything you're noted are refinements, and would serve you well if you choose to go Lancer, but for basic clearance you could probably submit the photos right now and would very likely be cleared.

Excellent work, Arne!

Sometimes it's kind of difficult with our GMOs... 😄 and I'm not satisfied with the pictures so this would be the best solution! 😉

You have great attention to detail
Arne. I’m certain approval won’t be an issue. The finish line is in front of you. Well done!
