Krub's 3D Printed Shoreteooper Squad Leader

Howzit, I'm Corbin "Krub" Halkerd from South Africa.

The build I'm working on is the Squad Leader using files from Sean Fields(I know some modifications must be made). I'm using a locally Manufactured ABS on the Ender 3 V2 in my custom shoretrooper painted... Filing cabinet

So onto some specifications

I'm a Student so I've budgeted this build down a LOT. I am going for Vanguard quality on everything except for the boots at the moment and my expected costs are ZAR3500 or about 230$, the Brecons alone brought that cost up 120$. With the help of my grandmother I will be hand making all soft pieces and these are my alternatives to the Brecons.

For just 35$ I'm happy with these.

Now in terms of the armor, two issues arise, I'm 6'2" and quite pudgy, so for the meantime I am only working on pieces that won't need to be resized because I aim to lose a good bit of weight , namely:

Helmet, hands, gloves, boots, belt attachments, E-22 Blaster, neck seal and shoulders.

I have found sources for basically all the materials i will need including for the soft parts

For Spray paint i will use Montana Gold but I'm not sure of some of the colours so help would be appreciated on those with question marks

Base- Sahara Beige

Head Decal-Blood Orange

Blue-Himalayas(?)

Red- Shock KENT Blood Red

Yellow- Brimstone(?)

Black and white - generic store brand

I'm also considering getting the rustoleum texture paint I've seen on some armors, we'll get there eventually.

Here's my progress on the helmet piece, so far I have the front mask and I'm currently printing the base of the helmet.

Printing at 0.2mm with ABS

Things are already getting exciting.

Also I recently saw on the shoretrooper fam Facebook that someone painted up a shoretrooper surfboard for an accessory, will definitely look into this, I live at the tip of Africa by a beach, I have to you know?

My print has an estimated 12 hours left and my area has scheduled power cuts in 11 hours, old Ender 3 is racing the clock today I guess

On that, I am printing the final part of the main helmet structure, which for me is the back panel between the bottom ring and the dome20210310_112609_compress0.thumb.jpg.9290e842aa718f9787937dcc4f49c3bc.jpg

After he's all together I'll be sanding till I'm blue while the add-ons print

Hey Krub, looking fwd to following your build!

It’s great that you are going for VG quality, upgrading boots down the line is very doable.

I would refer you to the paints section so that you don’t need to repaint when you do decide to go Vanguard!!!

Shoretrooper surfboard you say? Yes please!!!

My issue is that Montana is the only brand with their whole catalogue available in South Africa, so to get the other colours I'd probably need to fly to America and buy the paints and paint there cause it's illegal to bring/import Aerosols to here. I'll update the Montana colours they list in that post thank you very much.

Outside of that, I heard of an exception for paint colours in countries that can't source it allowing the nearest possible colour, that's only for Level 1 isn't it?

You might be able to talk to a local paint shop and they could possibly mix them for you, but yeah montana should get you through basic approval, no worries!

Short of taking my armor to a car garage I'm stumped on colour matching around me because I do want VG colour so down the line all I have to do is change boots and I'll be done, I'm going to try find somebody who will loan me an airbrush then I will spend several years colour matching myself with a good printout of the colours. Sounds painful but I will do what I must.

You should be able to (hopefully) find an auto body shop to color match the Ford Nordic Blue 1401A. That's what I did in the states. It's a universal code.

From what I could find, the only place with code matching recently closed the service due to lack of business. Damn covid stopping traffic incidents :(. Will look around from place to place though, I still have a long way to go until I need to get that done luckily

I've got all pieces of the helmet done and I'm currently processing it, with my blast shield, does this look like it's sitting too high or is it just me? 20210315_014645_compress90.thumb.jpg.189b13d2a70afdd0f9705a736b428ea8.jpg

Don't worry about the patchwork of brown, silver, white and spot putty, I have very strange ways

It does look a tad bit high, is that how the file is? check out ref pic:33172acda70787827c7ca687cd83072e.jpg 587df8db657e9ee845cb1a73d205c739.jpg

Found another SF bucket for you to compare:

Are you unable to lower it to this lip?

On the fully constructed model it seems to have the bottom face of the blast shield align to the top face of the rim. 20210315_024404_compress2.thumb.jpg.27b351ceee502540e7384d190ef76944.jpg

As of current I chopped off the mounting pieces and I'm moving them a cm with spot putty, Americans call it red neck engineering, South Africans say "'n boer maak 'n plan"

"i wil do what I must"

I matched it to the first of your reference pictures and at the same angle it looks to be perfect, thank you for your help Minimo!

That looks good!

Back at things again, things have been a bit rough for the resident African but we persevere

https://imgur.com/a/peKgsvC

Here's the imgur link of my progress

1. I've basically finished processing the helmet barring the rim above the visor but I will get to that in the future when I've gotten my spray cans.

2. Begun work on the rifle! As can be seen on the grip, I have run out of filament so progress on adding new parts is on hold but processing is still going forward. Awesome files provided by Mr Hossini aka Kuroi Sabato from ST Fam facebook, he has recently upgraded many parts of the blaster in metric piping

3. Gotta love a working trigger

  • 1 year later...

Hi all!

Been a while since I posted, but don't worry, it wasn't because I quit. Far from it!

Since my last post, I've gotten a compressor, discovered ABS sanding, and started working a full time job, meaning I actually have money to work on this project. Hooray!

I have nearly completed the helmet, as you can see in these images. I'm very proud of it. It is only missing its decal and visor, each of which I have a plan for(vinyl decal and acetate sheet with window tint).

https://imgur.com/a/zIe8SRH

The colour is a good match, so don't worry about that, it's just the lighting. I used a pantone book that was tattered and left for dead at work. Lucky me! Those things are the equivalent of 500$ out here.

Rifle is still coming along. I've printing the Kuroi Sabato model and loving it, just lazy to sand :)

But we are getting places!

Hi Corbin

Don’t know how I missed your initial thread last year.

I’m originally from Cape Town, so I can empathise to your challenges about cost and supply.

Regarding the Ford blue and Toyota red, have you tried the local auto part stores like Midas? They may be able to either sell you some touch up paint which you can run through your airbrush, or a store mixed aerosol.

Cheers
