Starting a grunt build, have a few questions!

Hey y'all! I've decided to start a Shoretrooper grunt build!

...However, I'm a little lost on where to start and could use some advice. Got a LOT of questions.

I'm getting my undershirt and pants from Darkside Closet, my boots from ImperialBoots (Couldn't track down an original Orca Bay pair for a decent price) and that leaves the armor, gloves, and various other bits and bobs.

I was thinking about going with 850AW for the armor and helmet, but I've heard from some people that the kit requires "Heavy modifications" and whatnot. Was this for his V1 run and I'm just seeing older posts? What exactly needs modified for approval?
I've heard great stuff about Jim's kits, but I have no idea where to find his work or how to contact him. How does his kit compare in price as 850's Grunt kit + helmet is about $540. I can't afford a super expensive kit at the moment, so that price point is really attractive to me at the moment. But if it's a bad kit, it's a bad kit and I'm not getting it.  

How is Imperial Surplus' kit? I've always heard great things about them.

As for the helmet, it's always the part of any build I'm the most picky about. Who has the best helmet kit? I would love to see comparison photos or just photos of completed buckets in general so I can choose.

Welcome! I’m Michael and it’s nice to see another potential shoretrooper. I bought my kit from 850AW. For lvl 1 approval not much had to be done in the way of modifying. You get a “replacement” collar you have to install and that’s about it. I do have my downsides with that though. If you are seeking a higher level of approval I recommend giving imperial surplus a shot. If not stick with 850 AW and enjoy it! It was my first kit and I built a squad leader. I’m actually about to start a nico Henderson helmet print for better accuracy.
