Scout trooper has always been my favorite finally decided to jump on a set from Studio Creations

currently working on the helmet going to take it slow since I am working another build at the moment

filled the gap with ABS paste from some left over scrap 

took a few times but finally smooth enough to paint

will wet sand before painting

i cut the ears and painted the inside black

used and exacto knife 

painted the bucket white used Rust-Oleum high gloss white

was happy how it turn out until i saw i had a crack that caved in  on the side 

will have to refill and sand 

also noticed some parts of the helmet the paint was very smooth and on other parts you can see and feel the paint (prob the old almost empty can of paint i had)

how can i avoid this so it all comes out nice and smooth

maybe a bit of over spray caused it ?

wondering if its still ok like that

paint seems to match the ABS plastic from the face pretty good

should the face be painted as well?

covered the nasty hole with JB weld but had to use 60 grit to sand it down creating some scratches so i had to fill it with bondo putty

Well, if it were me, I'd spray both the back and the faceplate just so they match.

A few things could have happened with the less smooth part of the paint on your helmet  --

1) If it's an older can with less paint, then that can affect the consistency of the spray that comes out. Gloss white is also a tricky color to spray and the many angles and divots on the scout helmet makes it especially hard to make sure you've got an even coat overall.

2) How smooth was the primer layer underneath? Gloss paint reflect all imperfections, so if one part of the helmet was still a bit rough, then it'll pick it up

3) As you said, overspray can cause this effect too. Did you come back and spray only a portion of it later, after the rest had dried?

4) Humidity can do crazy things to spray paint. If it was especially humid that day, then the paint can start drying before it really gets a chance to even out on the helmet.

I've painted a few scout helmets in my time and they're always a challenge to get perfectly right. I suggest you wet sand with 400 grit up to 800, clean it, then re-spray on a low humidity day. I also suggest you pick up a new can of paint and give that a try as well.

i think it was a almost empty rattle can

when i used a new one i got better results

sanded everything down 220 grit 

primed and wet sand with 1500 grit

i thought it had gone good however some of the paint started peeling off

the dome had a worse affect 

now i got some heavy sanding ahead of me

Hi Art. Quick question.Are you using primer and paint that are the same make/manufacture? I’ve seen this before on other builds where two different types were used and saw the same adhesion issues. The primed helmet looks great but it looks as if the paint is reacting to the surface primer in that last pic.

I’m thinking it was the clear coat it had before 

diff brand 

primer and paint were the same brand

Yep, that'll do it. Even clear coats from the same brand can cause issues if it gets layered on too much, or the undercoat isn't fully and totally cured -- and I'm talking like a week's worth of curing, not dry to touch.

been getting this issue on this side of the helmet only 

ived tried sanding and painting several times with the same result

i decided to sand off all the paint and restart 

i noticed a hole on the side getting bigger as i sanded 

i used abs cement and i guess it doesn take well to heat since it came off 

so i decided to cut it all out and refill with abs paste 

 

 

going to let it sit for a few days so it cures properly

Yikes! Well, you've just experienced the dreaded paint crackles. It can happen for a few reasons, such as laying on the paint too thick in one spot, not letting any underlying layers dry, or reactions with any paint layers or primer underneath. Sometimes it can happen if the paint isn't fully mixed and there's an imbalance with the paint and solvent.

On the last scout helmet that I painted I had a lot of issues with crackles -- especially in the area you did, as well as on the bottom of the back of the helmet.

Spray paint can be super finicky. It's supposed to more be convenient, right?

With where you are now, go ahead and sand down the abs paste once it's cured. Once everything is smooth again, I'd hit that area with some flat white primer first. Sand that with high grit sandpaper, then you can go over it with gloss.

I've found that gloss paints tend to have a greater tendency towards crackling. I've also found that in instances where I'm getting crackles in one spot, throwing down a layer of primer after sanding tended to avoid the crackles once I did a gloss coat.

Let us know how it goes and we'll advise as best we can.

fits like a glove

going to need some rework tho 

the velcro for the pouches are sewn on the bottom not sure if its suppose to be that way 

not that familiar with the soft goods on a TB

here it is with the chest armor on 

still need to work on the rest of it

Hey Art, your build is coming along great. For your cummerbund the ideal length should be about 8 or 9 inches from top to bottom. The bund looks longer than that in your photos, but it might just be the way you have your pouches attached.

As you currently have it, your belt would be sitting on top of the bund whereas the bottom of the bund should rest just on top of your belt. It’s an easy fix.

1. Secure the top of your pouches so that the top of the tab comes to the top of your bund. That will lower your pouches.
2. Raise your bund so that the tabs of your pouches sit under your chest armor. That will shorten up the bund and raise it high enough that your belt will be positioned properly on your waist not your hips.

It’s a minor adjustment but it will really tighten up the look.

Hi Art! I hope it’s the photo but it looks like your pouches are reversed. The straight side of the flap should face your belly button.

 

The Velcro on the bottom of the pouch flaps is ok and that’s how I have mine.

How long did it take you to get your KriptonTop order?  Was it within the 6 weeks he is stating on his Esty store?

i just put the pouches on real quick for the photo didn't know which way there go

took 3 months due to the quarantine and all but well worth the wait

i also have the cummerbund upside down in the pic

I placed an order for both Flight Suit and Flak Vest from KriptonTop June 6th that was supposed to be completed and delivered by July 24th, but having emailed Christian back and forth he let me know that the Bolivian government had shut down his progress as well as his shipping source capabilities.  He’s been very helpful with any updates, replying within 24 hours, but did let me know that the shutdown had affected manufacturing and shipping timesframes.  This past Sunday’s back-and-forth emails regarding my order sounded encouraging though, so I’m hopeful he’s been able to get back on track and get caught up with the 6 week order-thru-delivery timeframe.

So far so good. Looks like the cod is getting pulled under and that's causing it to fold. Pull your bund up higher towards your pecs to get it under your chest armor and that should pull the cod a little flatter to the front. Also check to make sure the cod strap isn't too tight. You'll need to paint/decal your chest indent medium grey. If you can bring your thigh boxes up to around 1"-1.5" from the bottom of your belt. Things will tighten up once you get those finishing touches on so keep up the great work!
