Building a screen used helmet replica

Recommended Posts

So I've given myself a little challenge :) I've always been intrigued by the first and for a long time only biker scout helmet that was privately owned and outside the LF archives; yes, you guessed it, the Steve Sansweet bucket!

There are thourough reviews on this helmet, e.g. on starwarshelmets .com and per video on Youtube https://bit.ly/2PY49FH so there's plenty material to work from:

So, my challenge is to replicate this helmet down to every scratch and the tiniest speck of dust 😁

Since I need to wait for a fresh delivery of 1.5mm pinseal ABS I used the time to design the decals already:

SteveS3.jpg

Also while searching for some more images of this helmet I came across an interesting image:

SteveS4.jpg

This helmet looks exactly like the "Steve Sansweet" (it has since changed the owner) helmet and it appears that the "battle damage" has already been there during filming and not like to so many other original helmets inflicted later.

My only problem was: No matter how hard I was looking for this image in the movie I could not find it! So if anybody has any leads that would be highly appreciated :)

Stay tuned...

Constantin,

Here’s the photo. It takes place at the 58:07 mark in the movie. It’s when Han steps on the twig and gets hit in the face.

Adjustments.jpg

Here’s the thing. It’s clearly not the same helmet. But take a good look at the background foliage. It is absolutely identical. For the camera crew to line two shots separate shots up with a different helmet and in a different take to perfection would be a feat of amazement. Even the body armor looks to be in the exact same position which makes me wonder if this infamous photo wasn’t photoshopped.

On further review Constantin, I do believe the photo is faked. Look at the two photos below. If you look at your photo, the red arrow points to where the edge of the original helmet from the original photo is protruding. The other circled areas show markers in the foliage indicating the same background.

The dark spot in the foliage just behind the exposed neck of the jumpsuit is a perfect match.

eye lense seems to be a tad smaller on the second bottom  pic, also there appears to be a second line/ridge where the lense ,meets the nose, just above the  nose decal

The first helmet that AradunFF posted is a stunt helmet from the scout Han encountered. We've talked about in the past. The helmet looks to be casted in polyurethane or something similar. That's the reason it's off compared to the other movie helmets. The faceplate and visor look to be permanently attached to the helmet. Its looks seamless at the top of the visor.

I agree with Stroker about the stunt helmet, but the helmet in the second photo appears to be superimposed over the stunt helmet in the first photo. Does anyone know where the bottom photo originated?

Thanks, Dennis - you're absolutely right! Somebody did a pretty decent photoshop job there. The reason back then was probably to show how easy the Steve S. helmet blended in but I never saw this mentioned.

Well, that would have been the icing on the cake if that helmet could indeed have been matched to a screen used helmet but anyhow - I don't think there should be much doubt that this was at least a production made helmet.

Stroker and Spike are right as well; the helmet this one was photoshopped over was the urethane one, you can tell because it's a bit warped and the lens section is fully cut out and larger than in the regular helmets.

Thanks a lot for clearing that up, guys!

No problem Constantin. Glad the mystery is solved. I for one am really looking forward to seeing your finished product. Your work is always phenomenal.

Quick update; I've made even more mods to the mold, sharpened the tears some more and added a return edge to the side of the facemask. It's a bit trickier to pull but I always wanted to have that feat from the original helmets :) One other feature of the Sansweet helmet is that the ridge between the 8th and 9th vent was broken so it looks like one large vent. I didn't want to do this to my mold (which has 8 vents) so I'm replicating this in the cast :)

Okay, the boring assembly part is almost done. I've primed it and marked the chipped areas where I'll apply a paste to really create the effect of chipped of paint.

Hopefully I'll paint the bucket later today and then the fun weathering part begins!

I've been working on my first build, and being a glutton for punishment wanted to make the helmet myself, and I've always wondered about there being 7 or 8 dents in the back there.  Some builders have the 7, some have the 8, and I won't like, it's caused me some concern come submission time.

The majority of helmets had 8 vents. The mold had 9 vents but the 9th was cut of in most cases. With this particular helmet the ridge between 8th and 9th was broken leading to one large 8th vent.

There is absolutely nothing in the CRL concerning the specific number of vents, so you should be fine. If your GML has a concern about your vents come submission time, I would hope that they would reach out to the detachment for clarification.
