Wouldn't be surprised if that was simply due to a rush paint job... or someone didn't feel like masking that top curve, ha!

Yep, its been done both ways. After all, what prop maker in 82 would have thought people would be scrutinizing hi def images of their paint jobs? :)

Seems pretty likely that the paint spilling out over the edge is the mistake and not vice versa.  Looks like the screen used snout areas have their sides angled to a degree where it's easy to see the black even if it doesn't go over the top.  Some of the fan made helmets don't.  Like KS for example.

Small details, but when I get back home, I can always take a look at the images I have of different screen used scout helmets and see which variety is more common.

I don't have any evidence to back up my assertion, just a feeling I always had.  "Why would they bring the black out to this arbitrary point when it's so much easier to paint just up to the edge?"
