I'm starting my first ever armor build with a Shoretrooper helmet from Imperial Surplus, but I'm a little unsure where to start. I've found a lot of paint tutorials, but the Imperial Surplus helmet has some extra plastic bits around the inside bottom of the helmet and  where the see through visor is supposed to go. Is there a recommended way to cut out the excess plastic and install the see-through plastic, or any helpful tools I should consider getting? If there's already a guide for this, a point in that direction would be great.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice!

If you mean these portions, they all stay.

Sorry, you're right; a picture will show it better. My helmet has plastic that I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to cut out, but I'm not quite sure what would be the best approach. Maybe something like a jewelers saw or a dremel? Does regular wood sandpaper work well for smoothing the rough edges?

You can try a combo of some lexan scissors, tin snips, or a dremel to cut those parts out. For the eyes, you might have to drill a series of holes first.

Yes, wood sanding paper will suffice!

A dremel would make short work of that extra material.  Just make sure you don’t go right up to the edges with the tools and use sandpaper or the dremel with a sanding bit to sand back to the edges where it’s needed to look clean.
