Its possible. That's why I  wait about a week before I paint the snout. Ask me how I know....

Lol yeah I can see the tape taking that white paint right with it.

If I may suggest - the black really should be about halfway over the inside edge of the snout. So, yes, it should be black where the greeblie is, but you need just a bit more going over that edge. Take a look at the gallery at the screen-used scout helmet and you'll see what I mean. ;)

Took a look at screen used helmet images and debated that but in my opinion and I may be wrong but I believe the black ends right at that edge. We’re it’s flat up at the snout I don’t really see it going over that as you suggested. I googled a bunch of images of screen used helmets and this is how I felt comfortable putting the black on. Again I may be wrong and I am sure you may know more than me on the subject. 😀

It can vary, depending on the helmet.

If you look at the RS helmet, which I linked earlier, the paint only reaches the edge of the indent:

You can see it more clearly in the propstore auction photo, as well as the odd snout greeb:

However, the Scout helmet from the Power of the Costume exhibition clearly has it just over the edge of the indent:

And it's also the case with the green screen scout from the speeder chase:
