Raised lip around the Shoulder Bells

Recommended Posts

For years I have been looking at the Bluray of RotJ and have been thinking that there was a raised lip around some of the Shoulder Bells in certain shots.  With the release of the fan-funded Star Wars 4k83 film, I think I have confirmation of this elusive raised lip.

What does the hive-mind here think?

Based on the helmet, that looks a lot like the stunt armor. What scene is the screenshot from?

That's likely bang-on. That visor flare is very indicative of a stunt helmet and likely, stunt armour. That almost looks like it could be from the speeder bike chase.

That said, 1 photo really isn't enough for us to change anything about the shoulder bells. We have more info that shows there is no lip than we do the other way.

It's rubber stunt armour , the lip is to help structural integrity . Only used a few times , I don't think the c.r.l. Needs a separate " stunt" classification , unless some vendor wants to start producing stunt  rubber armour !!!

This screen shot is from the close up when, during the speeder chase scene, the Biker Scout fires his blaster at Leia. I’ll have to upload the uncropped image to my website to show the full screen cap, this forum only allows 500k image uploads via their ‘attach image’ feature.

I ran into that too early on.  You need to use a site like photobucket, imgr or flickr to host your images, then you just plop the provided link here on the forum and it will display in the thread.

Ah ok, so that would be the same scene as the images below --

Really tough to say. Could it also be an untrimmed lip from the mold?

Corey,
It's possible that it's left over trimming from cutting the parts off the flashing, but that lip is really consistent, like it was molded into the part.  I think CatfoodRob is onto something with the reinforced lip theory.

The scene where Han Solo fights with the Biker Scout would be a great time to use a rubber stunt suit, but unfortunately the action doesn't allow for that many 'in-focus' shots of the armor... so determining an edge lip on that costume has been difficult.

Another image of the 'lip' visible , this time from the front.  Possibly this particular set of shoulders was only used on these close up "green screen' scenes???

could be the trim line so anyone trimming the part would have the same shape as anyone else working on these , there may have been a couple of people trimming parts

I hear what you're saying, Jeff, but if that front-facing shot had a lip around the edge of the shoulder bell, we should see the edge sticking up at the top of the bell, and I'm not seeing that.

Also, the shot from the side is definitely a stunt suit, due to the helmet visor bottom flare, where the front shot is a regular suit, again, because of the lack of flared visor.

As it would make sense, whenever there was a scene with contact or falls, they wore the stunt suit.

In addition to the bell lip, the stunt suit also has the compressed/crushed chest armor.

You can see a few examples here:

Han fights the scout:

You can see the lip, or what is at least a rough/poorly cut trim line on the shoulder bell

Luke jumps from Leia's speeder and throws the scout off.

Bell lip is slightly evident here on the wearer's right shoulder.

The scout rams Luke's speeder:

Again, bell lip is slightly evident here on the wearer's right shoulder as well.

I'm still of the mind that it's a combination of the wonkiness of the stunt suit mold lines + a quick and dirty trim job. Regardless, I welcome and enjoy the continued discussion :)

It's possible the inspiration came from some sort of sporting good related shoulder pads.  They (prop makers, costume builders) may have had an initial purpose for those lips that was eventually scrapped later on.  I know (from personal experience) back in the 70's, 80's & 90's a lot of ice hockey gear that had plastic caps over the shoulders, elbows, knees etc.. had lips on them with tiny holes drilled along the perimeter that were used to pass a stitch through to a softer foam or fabric protective garment underneath.  Maybe even motocross pads...who knows if they were purpose built for the costume or repurposed from something else.  Kinda fun to think/debate about it though.
