KS Helmet kit build issue / Finished!

Recommended Posts

I'm running into a problem while building my KS helmet kit.

The visor seems to be to wide to fit properly attached to the faceplate.

The left side fits pretty nice (I think) but I have to force the right side in place to stuck to the visor.

As a result oft his there is a lot of force (torque) pulling on it which causes it to tear both parts apart of each other.

So far I have used  Scotch 3m foam tape (as recomend by Kropserkel in their build video) to bond the sides.

Should E6000 do the trick? Or some extra trimming somewhere (like in the left top corner of the faceplate)?

Hope you guys can help me out with this one!

Not familiar with that helmet but...  Have you mocked up all the helmet components?  I'd suggest temporarily taping the face, visor and bucket together to get a better idea of what needs adjusted.  You may find that the face plate needs pulled wider to fit the bucket or you may find that your visor is just too wide.  If it's the latter and that is typical of the KS kit you may have to shrink the visor width. (which would probably take some ingenuity)  But again...hard to say without all 3 major components fit together.

hey bro, what I would do is the following: split the visor into two pieces and trim on both sides about 4-5 mm whatever is needed to loose the gap between the faceplate and visor.

reattach the two visor sides with a screenaccurate piece of abs , this piece is holding the faceplate in itsplacw as well as a spacer, use bison two component plastic/abs glue, fill the gap with two component polyester epoxy putty from alabastine, sand it, fill it, sand it and you’re good to go!!

hit me up whenever you need advise!!!

It's taped together, and test fitted it on the assembled bucket.

I think shrinking the visor width can be a solution, but it's a radical one...

Cheers!

Hi Sebas,

Thanks for your help!

I will take it into account, but that means also that I have to paint the helmet and that's something else 😬

yeah marcel, that is correct! I have build a RS kit which had to be painted anyways... the paintjob isn’t something to be taken lightly, mine has been painted by fabian, our garrison bro who works in car body repair industry and is a professional carpainter. If you do this, hit him up cause he’s amazing when it comes to paintjobs!

good luck and let me know when you have any questions!!

Probably your best bet.   Like Sibbel suggested, split it in the middle to remove some material.  I'd probably add a support piece of ABS to the underside of the cut/seam.  If you can source some 1mm thick ABS sheet it should make for an easy fix.  Not sure if it's available to you in Holland, but I work a lot with styrene variants of plastic and I prefer solvent welding over glues and epoxies.  I use products from Sci-grip.  Sci-Grip #3 will solvent weld ABS to ABS for a permanent bond.  Then you can hide the seam with some filler and sanding.

if marcel needs it I have it and ship or bring it to him and can help him out when neccessary. that supportpiece you mention is what I mean and tried to describe, it works as a placeholder for the faceplate too

Hey there trooper, before you go splitting the helmet into pieces, keep in mind that the gap isn't likely to be all that visible behind the front return edge, especially if you center it so there's only a small gap on each side.

Don't use 3M tape for finali assembly of the helmet, that's not going to hold. E6000 will work, but it takes a long time to cure, so you'll really need to anchor everything in place.

Most people use clamps, tape, and rare earth magnets to assist with assembly and gluing.

Even then, if the gaps are really egregious, you can fil it with abs paste.

Before even going that far, are you able to do some slight heat moulding to get it to fit in place better? You can slightly (and I do emphasize slightly, you don't want to melt it!) heat it with a heat gun on the low setting, or with some boiling water.

That's an awesome gesture👍!

First I'm going to try some less rigoureus actions,  if all of that doesn't give any results  I will call in the Troops😀!

I have all the tools and glue you mentioned above.

I will give this a shot first👍!

Pulled the faceplate and visor loose yesterday and repositioned it to divide the gaps more evenly.

I used good old E6000 to reattach it again and clamped it.

Hope this will do the trick!

  • Darthmarses changed the title to KS Helmet kit build issue / Finished!

Finally Finished the helmet!

I think it turned out quite ok.

Made myself a raised snout out of a piece of 2mm ABS instead of using the decal KS had sended  with the helmet, and Installed tactical helmet padding.

I'm going to replace the other decals and the gray bolt/henge cover in time.

It's only for display and not mentioned for Trooping.

It turns out a bit purple at some angles, but that's due to the ABS Kropserkel uses.

Thanks for all the feedback and advise I was fortunate to receive during the build! That's gold!

But if you see room for improvement, please let me know.

I hope you Scouts like it!
