Cummerbund Fabric

Recommended Posts

What are most people using in fabric for the cummerbund. Canvas, Duck cloth, polished cotton or something else?  I read the thread that listed original as polished white fabric and pouches are canvas.

According to the "Beyond the Armor" book and the "Costumes" book, the cummerbund was made from polished white cotton.  We are soon going to be updating the CRL to mandate cotton fabric for Level 2.  Save the duck cloth for your pouches!

Is there a specific brand that you guys use? I looked it up on Joann's and Hobby Lobby, but there were multiple white options like "White Kona Cotton" and "White Cotton Poplin".

I obsessed about this for awhile too.  My research for polished cotton came up with the description:

Polished cotton aka "chintz" fabric is usually either 100% cotton or a cotton/poly blend.  It has a glaze finish on it to give it a sheen/polished look.  The sheen comes from the finishing process of the fabric.

It's commonly used for home decor (decorative pillows and such) where the semi-shiny look is desirable.  The problem with that product (from what I've read) is that it loses it's sheen when washed or if it's used for the purpose of clothing, upholstery or decorative quilting (due to rubbing or repeated flexing of the fabric).  When the fibers get wet or start to wear it will lose the sheen from the finishing process and simply appear as a generic white cotton.

I understand the CRL for level 2 says "polished", but if this is the only type of fabric that meets that criteria then it's not going to look "polished" for any extended period of time when used in the manner we intend to use it for.   Kinda seems silly to go the distance for Lancer approval, take a few photos of it looking nice and then after wearing it/throwing it in a troop box a few times it no longer meets that criteria by any other means other than "it was originally polished for approval".

Just my 2 cents.

Are we sure that's what it says in the CRL?  ;)

Cummerbund

  • Made of smooth white cotton fabric
    • Polished cotton or mercerized cotton is preferred. Canvas or duck cloth is not permitted.

Level 2 just calls for smooth white cotton fabric.  Polished or mercerized is only preferred, therefore not required for Lancer status.   We realize polished cotton is tough to get these days.  We just want the bund and cod to be made from a lighter, smooth cotton to differentiate it from the heavy fabric of the pouches.

Sorry.  I was under the assumption that the CRL was to be updated with new wording.  So my assumption is that it's going to change to something that is difficult to obtain.

We already changed it.  That was the change.  We call for smooth white fabric for the bund and cod, canvas/duck cloth for the pouches.

The change was made because, texturally, there's a big difference between the cotton canvas pouches and the polished cotton 'bund and I think we all decided that it was important to show that difference.
