RS Prop Masters Armor -- My First Impressions of the Kit

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, so I received my parcel from RS Props yesterday. Scout armor cast from an original set! Pretty cool!

I thought it might be helpful to provide a brief overview regarding some of the details I noticed.

Here's what was in the parcel:

Most of the armor is quite thick. I'd compare it to Mon Cal or Studio Creations in terms of thickness. The only thin pull is the det box, which has some pretty sharp corners, so a thinner pull is understandable.

The belt is molded with a curve. As with the originals, there are also a number of pull marks between the belt boxes.

Looks like the original armor they used had a number of cracks around the belt. You can see where they likely repaired the master mold.

The holster is nicely cut.

The det tube end cap is pretty flat. It's not perfectly flat, but pretty close.

The det tubing itself is a master stroke of genius. They wrapped a tube with cable, as we've done on here, but then cast that part in foam. It's really light. Feels similar to a hyperfirm pistol.

Greeblies looks about right, compared with the screen used versions we've seen.

One thing I was very surprised by was how short the bicep armor is cut.

Compared with the screen used versions, most of the bicep armor appears to be much longer.

I've seen a few other RS kits that have come in and they also have the short trimmed bicep armor. It's also apparent on the later test RS test shots on social media, so it appears to be common amongst a number of the kits.

Their early prototype photo does display longer bicep armor -- I wonder if they were all just cut too short?

Overall, I think the armor is awesome. It's fantastic to finally get some scout armor that has screen lineage. I also want to throw a shout out to Strider/CFO. It's really astounding to realize just how close he got with his armor sculpt.

At the moment, the short trimming on the bicep armor is pretty much my only criticism out of the box.

Anyhow, that's my quick overview, at least for now. If anyone has any questions or comments, feel free to ask away.

I thought this was only available as a commissioned / finished set, no kits?

I had bought the armor only set, not a kit. I did send them an email asking for it not to be assembled early on, but I honestly can't recall if I heard a yay or nay on it. I would've been ok with either showing up at my door. About 6 months later, this is what arrived in the mail.

may I ask how much you paid for the trimmed kit?

I bought the armor only set not long after they opened up orders. I sent them an email asking for it not to be assembled.

Very nice review. Looks good but I agree on the bicep armor being to short.

Glad to see this. Might be worth contacting RS and asking about the bicep armor issues. It really should wrap around the arm more and be taller. Otherwise, it all looks as I expected. Very cool!

Agreed, I plan to send them an email shortly.

Not sure if they're still lurking the boards? @RS Prop Masters?

@CatfoodRob lurks on the boards quite a bit.  Maybe he'll chime in

He's a different Rob, but he works with them all the same.

Very cool review!

The det tubing is an interesting move, the "cabled" tube we use right now is so heavy it keeps me from properly finishing that bit. I am just using the vacuumcleaner hose.
It's still not there yet, but dang is it a good set i would say so!

That holster and those hipboxes are now on my wishlist Santa if you're reading this you know where i live.

Yeah exactly, I built one using the wrap method myself and it was just too heavy, so I went back to the ribbed hose for trooping practicality.

I didn't purchase the scout blaster from RS, but I did test out the holster with my DVH v3 blaster. Fits pretty well.

If anyone has the RS blaster, I'd be curious to see the comparison with how it fits in the holster.

The blaster is a very tight fit , but their blaster mould was scaled from a cast of a real singlepoint scope .

The holster itself is built as large as possible . The movie prop builders had the same problems , ever wondered why the singlepoint sight cast has one adjuster screwcap missing ? That's because with the cap on, the blaster doesn't fit !!!

Thanks Rob. I'll be really curious to see how both the RS blaster and the DVH v3 compare to the Praetorian holdout blaster that's in production as well. This is a great time to be a scout! :)

Update, RS was kind enough to take my feeback on the bicep armor into account and I recently received the replacement parts. Really outstanding work and service on their part and I'm extremely grateful that they went the extra mile on this. The updated biceps looks absolutely dead-on correct.

Lou's looks like a pretty good fit! The RS one is (quite obviously) too big. Using the original scope is a great start for the scaling but there are some other parts as well 😉

@CatfoodRob:

Maybe these references can help you check your scaling:
